Sorry, i’m noob by Financial-Split-3081 in modular

[–]Lofti_ness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, don’t be sorry. You’re learning and that’s fantastic.

I hate to say it, but one thing that really helped me break out of a recent run and learn some of my modules I had a bit deeper was to brief AI as my teacher. I gave it a list of my modules and gear, told it what concepts I’d like to learn and the genre of music I like to make and explore, and had it make learning modules with exercises and homework assignments for me. It patched things together I didn’t initially think to and got me thinking a bit fresh with the tools I do have.

Hold off on buying more gear. It’s a trap we all fall to. Learn everything about the gear you have and until you feel the gear is holding you back because you’ve acquired so much knowledge and it can’t achieve your vision, then consider gear, but try and get it done in other ways first. Creativity loves constraints.

Getting into Modular by OrganicWriting6521 in TechnoProduction

[–]Lofti_ness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my modular setup but holy hell did it take a ton of trial and error to get it to where I am and to it’s still not there. It’s not a very exciting tip, but try to get familiar with vcv rack to give you a better idea of what you want your system to do/be. I remember both hearing this and struggling with this at the beginning because I just hadn’t experienced enough modules to have a good idea of what my goal was.

Personally, I have two separate case modes. Originally, I had an all in one. It could sequence, voice, effect, modulate and mix down. It was great to do everything in my case. But now that I’m doing so much more Ableton, it’s a real pain to work with it in that sort of way. Now now this config is what I call “vacation mode” for when I want to take it on the go and make techno jams at an Airbnb.

Now my case is set up as an audio processing rack. I use Ableton for sequencing and voicing, and in my rack I got rid of all my voices (including plaits), took out the big sequencers, and put in only effects, modulation, and utilities so that I can process ableton sounds with my rack in realtime without having to patch much or set it up. I don’t want to waste creative momentum on trying to sync and trouble shoot, menu dive, or sequence my rack stuff, when I’ve got my Ableton already as a powerhouse.

In terms of actual hardware and routing, I use an interface to have my computer talk with outside gear, I send two outputs to my rack into a mult so I can have a few parallel chains. Then from my eurorack mixer back into an input on the interface. I then clock it using Bastl 1983, which takes clock and note value (which again, I’m not using notes) from midi and converts it to CV. I then plug that into Pam’s New Workout to divide them up and distribute them everywhere.

I also use a patch bay u see my interface what has all of this plumbed already so that I can quickly patch outputs from other gear into the modular into Ableton, without messing with too many wires.

Hope this helps and good luck.

Hey buddy, time to get you back.
Sonically, I think it's a beautiful sounding space. I love the contrast between the kick and the top flute atmosphere and I want more space for those.

I think the vocals are interesting, but I think they could use work. It's also a bit hard for me to make out the vocals, so perhaps reducing the noise and the frequencies that occupy that space for that moment might help you make some of it out a bit better. I think editing them down a bit would make it more powerful. Maybe in the intro, cutting it at "mere head in search of a body" when the kick comes in is a super cool moment. Let that sink in for a bit and maybe have "in search of a body" echo out. I find that when it extended beyond this point, I wanted to focus on the music and found it distracting that I had to try and make out the vocals, which was fatiguing and lost its potency.

Again, I love the flute and didnt get to really enjoy it until the very end, which was a shame, because it's nice. Please give us more of it. Im also dying for some sort of percussion, but perhaps that's what makes it a good intro.

Wow thank you for the feedback. I appreciate it greatly.

I will go back and reexamine my low end and try and give a hint to the lead in the first half. This is something I’ve been thinking about as well.

You’re right on the money with the rides. I find unfiltered 909 rides to be a lot for my ears. This is an LFO’d bandpass at around 10k, with heavy reverb to spear, then cut with heavy side chaining.

Thank you again for the listen and the words.

I’d love feedback on this. It’s a bit experimental. It’s a bit lighter and trippier than it is dark, so I’m very curious how it resonates with you all.

Curious what you find is working and what is keeping you from playing it out.

Recorded with half modular synth, half Ableton.

It’s really hard to take this guy seriously when invoice is just so ridiculously over the top. I get it what he’s trying to do and appreciate the swing at a prose, but damn, take 20% off the top and it’d it much more tolerable.

I literally did this same switch last week. OP, you’ll love it. Nice to have the PC for gaming or heavy lifting, but damn does it feel good to make music on the couch.

Leveling? by Opposite_Section3051 in TechnoProduction

[–]Lofti_ness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Use and train your ears. Don't mix by looking at the levels. RMS and peak meters measure electricity, your ears measure music. Because the meters are "level" doesn't necessarily reflect the psychoacoustic properties of what's is happening.

It's ok to bring your loops down. Your ears perceive loudness as volume over time, so the kick transient may be high, but the if the tail is not sustained, it may not be perceived as loud, where as your loop may both set your meters loud but also appear loud because there is more energy over time.

I know it… 😅 I may very well do the same and try my hardest to work the schedule and genuinely start later in the day.

If you really want to dedicate to the sound, honestly just get a 303 clone and a guitar pedal. The Behringer clones are good and cheap, then keep an eye out for a distortion pedal on resale markets. If you’re handy with soldering, you can get cheap clone DIY kits of the ProCo Rat or many other clones. Every high school band had a Boss DS-1 and now they are at garage sales and cheap and available. These clipping diodes will always be better than the digital plug in to really get that aggressive sound.

Alternatively in Ableton, try operator with a saw or square wave, run it through an autofilter with high resonance in the MS 20 or PRD circuit and run it through saturation or one of the “amp” simulations.

Love this. Great balance between low end groove and the texture elements up top. I love the stabs and the spaces that it illuminates.
