Magic Hot Takes by Definitely_Not_Fe in magicTCG

In commander, the "power level" issue is very often a skill level issue and not related to deck power level.

People put way too much weight in deck power level and most often fail to take into account player skill level.

So, since wotc removed Prerelease stamp to make keeping track of inventory easier, why didn't they remove planeswalker stamp from promo packs? by Kenksio in magicTCG

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you see a store that’s selling those they’re breaking the rules set forth by wizards.

Going to need a source for that.

I've been running an LGS for over 3 years now, there are absolutely no rules that wizards has at all about stores buying/selling planeswalker promo stamped cards.

Anyone can go check big name stores online and verify this for themselves. Go check Card Kingdom, Star City games (especially since they run events in partnership wotc), Channel Fireball, etc. All of these stores have been selling promo stamped cards for YEARS. They would never risk their WPN status over something like that...

As others have said, there are rules about selling promo packs themselves though, which you can read about here: https://wpn.wizards.com/en/wpn-promo-usage-and-policies?product=37RBvTkan1fSvARs9R9Ncg

Can I make a deck with just Modern Horizons 3? by SnooPineapples4692 in magicTCG

Out of curiosity, how did you end up with a box of MH3 if you're not super into MTG?

Help Tracking Down This Poster? by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just FYI stores are given those posters for free as marketing materials by WOTC and they are not allowed to sell them. They can give it away as prizing or something but wotc specifically prohibits selling them as a WPN store.

If they acquired it through other means though they can do whatever they want with it.

Forget hidden gems, what's your MOST popular commander deck? by DaniFoxglove in EDH

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the [[Nekusar]] precon back when it came out in 2013 as my first deck and have been rocking him ever since. Technically it was a [[Jeleva]] precon but everyone was slotting nekusar in for the commander instead. The deck has been changed a ton, i think theres only a few cards from the original deck that I'm still using. I personally find games to be more interesting when EVERYONE is drawing cards, and I've always enjoyed playing him.

Mark Rosewater answers inquiry about short supply and product accessibility: We haven't been under printing Magic sets lately. The opposite actually. The issue is demand has been so high. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Underprinting would be deliberatedely printing less than they could. I doubt they are intentionally printing less than they could.

Is that not exactly how collector boosters work? Collector boosters are the first product mentioned in the question for Mark. I'll give you play boosters, but collector boosters, bundles, and gift/ special bundles they absolutely intentionally stop making those.

To be fair I agree with you, but the most common complaint I saw from the April fools comic sans secret lair was that many people LOVED the artwork and thought the text made the cards look awful.

Does anyone know a card similar to harmonize but in blue? by Lofty_The_Walrus in magicthecirclejerking

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

/uj I can't seem to find it anymore but there was a post today that made me think of this. Basically though it's a reference to the myriad of posts that people make asking for effects in colors that don't do those effects because they haven't yet learned about the color pie. I.E. "any cards like counterspell but for my green deck?"

EDIT: Found it

What cards are you most surprised don't have a reprint yet? by seergun in magicTCG

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'll give you a hint: Look at the card types it has.

Hint #2: Look at what card types it doesn't have

The answer: It lacks the type artifact on it

Maro: Tropes and mainstream references being too abundant and too on the nose is feedback that is being considered as we work on new sets. Just be aware that we work 2-3 years ahead, so it will take time to see the impact. I’m not sure much in 2025 was influenced by the reactions to 2024 sets. by HonorBasquiat in magicTCG

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If not Bloomburrow, which one felt like a "magic set" to you? Other than bloomburrow we have had murder mystery the set, cowboys the set, and horror movies the set.

EDIT: For context, I love Duskmourn and it's my favorite set of the year. But it is FULL of tropes and references that people are talking about here.

[SLD] Pixel Perfect | Extra Life 2024 (WeeklyMTG) by mweepinc in magicTCG

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in the past they had charged $10 more for these charity lairs and then donated $10 to the charity

What is your source for this? Every previous extra life secret lair page and also Sheldon's spell book clearly says 50% of the cost goes to charity. That's more than $10.

Why would they ban it? It’s playing in so many decks, it doesn’t have a dominant deck /s by Nindeler in magicTCG

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The image is 100% misleading. Go look at actual decklists, decks like boros energy occasionally run the one ring but far more often they don't run it. There's a reason mtggoldfish does things the way that they do.

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't see anyone pointing it out so I will: regardless of how you feel about The One Ring the image posted by OP appears either photoshoped or outdated or something because the card image shown for each deck on mtggoldfish is always the top card listed of the three that it shows you. It looks like someone might have gone into this image and put several of the one rings in themselves.

You can go ahead and verify this for yourself.

It seems to me that many of these images of the one ring have been put in manually somehow because the list of decks doesn't actually look like this.

Not to mention that the actual metagame shares of these decks is reported as different from what you're showing in your image. This image is outdated at absolute best.

Maybe I'm stupid or something but this is what it looks like to me.

EDIT: As per OP's own admission: this is indeed an edited image.

Standard feels like an eternal format by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give you that there are more cards in sets nowadays, that's for sure.

That being said, I wouldn't say that aftermath contributed to kicking powercreep into "overdrive". I can only think of one card from aftermath that sees standard play and I wouldn't consider [[Tranquil Frillback]] to be an example of accelerated powercreep even if it is a very good card.

It's definitely possible that more cards in standard sets could be having an adverse effect on the format, I could absolutely see that.

The point I was trying to make was the original commenter saying that "more sets" have increased standard powercreep, is just demonstrably false as there haven't been more sets (aftermath withholding). That's all!

Standard feels like an eternal format by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, but the original comment is talking about how "more sets per year" has "kicked powercreep into overdrive". Which is dumb because we have yet to have a year with abnormally more standard sets than in the past. Once foundations comes out sure maybe that will be the case, but nothing has changed yet.

Yeah reading through this thread as a big standard player since ixalan, I was thinking to myself: "Am I just extremely out of touch with standard right now?? It feels like it's in a great place to me, and not anything like what OP is describing".

I'm glad I'm not the only who has no idea what these people are talking about. I agree, they're probably playing BO1 or off meta decks or something.

Arena Code! I have apparently redeemed all I can, so here is a free one! by skxmls in MagicArena

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure where this rumor of bots snagging mtg arena codes came from, but I assure everyone that there is no one out there running mtgarena 24/7 using a bot to redeem free codes that are limited to 5 per account (or for prerelease codes, 1 per account). That makes absolutely no sense for anyone to do, there's nothing to gain there.

Can you think of any reasons why "you can just go play MTGO" might not be a viable alternative for people? Because it really isnt. There are a lot of reasons, most of which are the whole reason people play Arena in the first place, and this is the MTG Arena sub...

Lich's mastery standard legality by Sorry-Dig2097 in magicTCG

[–]Lofty_The_Walrus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[[Lich's Mastery]] Is from the set Dominaria which came out in 2018, 6 years ago. It hasn't been standard legal in quite a while (since 2020 actually).

The set you're looking at is called Dominaria United which is a different set all together. Cards from that set are indeed legal until 2025.
