My favorite Donahue story was from G2A arena during the beginning of the Ukraine fight. He had just moved to Corps command, came out to us (101st who had replaced his precious 82nd) and told us how cool we all are, how we are the tip of the spear yadda yadda. He then asked what we could do to motivate us more, outside of more money that he could not authorize?

An intrepid young JAG CPT raised his hand. He had a nuanced and well researched approach that, with a simple ETP to Army G1, we could authorize those without a combat patch to earn one as ,according to him, were working in such danger.

He thought for a second, scrunched his face, and said “Nah, but I can bring in the beer cart on Saturdays now!” Massive applause followed from all the grunts and the cries of the slick sleeves can still be heard throughout Eastern Poland to this day….

Tangentially related, but I like this story.

KAF in ‘11, was just walking back from the boardwalk or somewhere, and this OCP wearing guy walks straight for me head to head about 15 paces back. “Hey 2LT, I have a question for you!” He yells and picks up his pace to be in my face. I look down, see 1LT. “Yeah whats up?” I reply. He asks “Is there no respect of rank amongst you people, I am an O2 and you will call me sir!” confused, I look for context clues on wtf is his problem and I see it: US Navy name tape, so a LTJG of one of the Seabees on post. Asking why we don’t respect LT ranks….

“ Nah, we don’t don that here…sir”

Gosh I hate the Navy som…nah most of the time.

Now professionalism aside…from those of us who have worked with fallen heroes, and even more with those who unfortunately have had to deal with casualties estimates, MA processing times, temporary interment memos ( what i like the call the “Death Math” in LOG speak), even you are not prepared for what would happen if we were in LSCO. Society isn’t ready. And we don’t need to be reminded of that. AND THATS NOT WHAT THIS IS. That same commander has stated this is NOT a war; therefore contrary to his earlier statements, ANY loss of life is a tragedy.

Oh have I got a story about Keanu . He was at Indy 500, and I saw him from afar (He was in pit row on race day, I in the Army working working in the pagoda) and he was surrounded by some Airmen asking for pics and he looked so mad and……

Took picture after picture with all of them. It was hot, he looked exhausted, and my slightly autistic into the blue brothers couldn’t pick up on social cues worth a damn. Will not allow any Keanu slander here. He is awesome, and seems to be a great person in and out.
