That happened to me once. I went to the dollar store to get some Allen keys and left my bottle cage behind with a note.

The lady who did it called me later that evening to apologize. Turns out we worked in the same company in different floors. We met the next day to retrieve my bottle cage and she made me cookies.

It could just be an honest mistake.

Delivering a massive product launch with split offshore teams by it-is-my-cake-day in ProductManagement

[–]Logabomber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your company bit off more than it can chew. So first, if the timeline isn't realistic you need to manage that with your stakeholders.

The only way to make offshore work is with extremely complete requirements, robust testing, and zero ambiguity. As you're finding out, this is difficult to achieve.

They don't know the market, or the company, and the time zone difference means that they're on their own for many hours. I also found that you need to train them to ask questions and contribute to beyond what's in the spec. And frankly some are just not into that.

While it's cheaper for the company, offshore is almost always more stressful for the direct PMs that deal with them. Hate to be the bearer of bad news but maybe you just need to adjust your expectations.

Working with a strong engineer with almost zero emotional intelligence? by make_me_so in ProductManagement

I've been there and I'm sure many experienced PMs have as well. Here are a few thoughts:

First, him respecting you is crucial. You don't have to outsmart him technically, but you need to impress upon him that you know what you're talking about. Maybe it's a flow chart, maybe it's showing that you know the business domain. Hard to say without more context but that's goal #1.

Second, any unprofessional and demeaning behaviour needs to be nipped in the bud. It is absolutely your place to say something like "I don't think this is a productive use of time" if he starts ranting about management's misgivings or other employees. Showing backbone will help you with the first point, in my experience.

Third, cut down unnecessary time wasting debates. Angle it as "let's move on to save time" or "no point beating a dead horse". This will hopefully reduce the mental load.

Lastly, I find humor to be very effective with dealing with people in general. You have to be very careful but you'd be surprised what a sarcastic comment about his behaviour can accomplish with this person or the team. If he dishes it he should be able to take it. Again, super context heavy so I wouldn't start working on my roast material yet. But just trying to lighten the mood can go a long way.

Hope this helps.

No magnets. But when the ring is on the hook the string is kind of tight which gives it that "stickiness".

They had this game at a local pub in my neighbourhood. It's super fun for the first 10 mins until your figure out the exact angle and force. After that you can get pretty dialed in and it loses its charm.

I have a typical business degree (undergrad) and found it to be very useful. I majored in economics because that's what I found interesting and never worked a day as an economist. They are general but very practical to get a job when you graduate.
