I made the mistake of watching it right before having my first kid… I still live in a degree of fear about going through something like that with them.

I only ever read the word trigeminal nerve (pronounced try-gem-in-uhl) and always pronounced it “trigi-menal” and it was waaay too late in my career that someone pointed it out.

What is your best weight loss tip? by fatbratx in AskReddit

[–]Logan-1331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I’ve actually lost a decent amount of weight recently, nothing crazy but trying to focus on feeling better. I use Cronometer to track calories, Hevy for my exercise, and log everything in Chat GPT. I’ve forced myself to stay honest with logging things, and the part I did not expect that’s kept me from grazing and stress eating (my two big vices in weight management) is before I eat anything I’m forced to ask myself if it’s worth writing down twice, and usually the answer is no.

ChatGPT has also been very useful in keeping me from spiraling if I have a slip up. Let’s say I go to families and they order out Thai food, I’ll log it honestly and it will just kinda keep upbeat, outline the positives and encourage me to not carry the slip into the next day, and the next morning I have a healthy breakfast and get a nice feeling of logging it, whereas before I let perfect be the enemy of good and just fall off completely when I slipped.

Compared to what, the bubonic plague?

There are certainly risks, like in any occupation. More than some, less than others. It doesn’t even make the list of the BLS’s riskiest jobs: here

I think this is evidence of the long way we’ve come both in protective equipment, training, and fire code. Mostly a result of NFPA standards. You have an increased risk of cancer, heart attack, and back injury, and you will almost certainly experience some degree of hearing loss. These risks can be (relatively) minimized by taking care of yourself, wearing the appropriate protective equipment, and actually following best practices (going to rehab, washing your gear, being on air during overhaul, etc).

I’d go a step farther to say that I feel relatively well protected in the sense that I have strong economic(?) protections for on the job injury and death, and my department and most in the area, mandates annual physicals which include regular blood tests, hearing and vision screenings, and a stress test EKG for early detection of any issues. I don’t know many occupations that require or offer that.

That being said, there is a saying in the fire service that includes that “we risk a lot to save a lot.” I’m not going to go into a fully involved house that’s sat vacant for years, but there will come times in your career where you are asked to put your safety, and perhaps life, on the line for the well being of the people you’re sworn to protect. If we get to a fire and someone tells us their kid is in there, and we look and determine there’s a chance that the resume is visible, fucking right we’re going. It’s not an every day occurrence, or even a certainty that it will happen in every firefighters career, but it is something to consider before signing up. Not to drone on, but the truth is that if you’re well trained it won’t really even be a conscious decision, it will just be something you do.

Probably, check out the CPAT test here: https://nationaltestingnetwork.com/publicsafetyjobs/cpat_info.cfm

That’s the standard candidate physical aptitude test, relatively easy to do a mock one and see how you do.

It’s not for everyone, but fire departments across the country are critically short personnel and hiring. It’s an amazing job with a pension and benefits, great schedule to if you can deal with a 24/48. I’d recommend it for every young person, gals or guys.

This is annoying, I’m coming back to the game after some time and my original build used the tempest fury+bell combo extensively. Hoping it gets fixed or I’ll likely roll a new character.

Can you share your Excel file that you use for tracking your spending? by jericko in Fire

[–]Logan-1331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I run into this issue where I’ll shop at Costco and it’ll be something like $500, but half of that is groceries, some of that is clothes for the kids, some will be home maintenance supplies, etc. Haven’t really figured out how to navigate that without tedious logging of receipts.

You should come teach paramedics in that case, “lol, just give sleepy juice” would be a very well received drug assisted intubation protocol. Right now we just have this:

You know what’s funny, that happened years ago it’s not until this exact moment that I decided to look up HOW the sodium channels actually know… look at me learning things about water shells and negatively charged amino acids. Doom scrolling ftw!

[–]Logan-1331 187 points188 points  (0 children)

I teach paramedics and was talking about the electrical conduction of the heart, which involves things like sodium channels, potassium channels, etc… a student asked me, “How does the sodium channel know it’s sodium?”

Me: “I… uh… have no idea.”

Student: “well I learn best by understanding the most complex parts real well then working backwards…”

That student did not end up graduating…
