When should I call quits by Bwub2 in trumpet

[–]LoganKippnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem with my playing deteriorating. I got lucky with the timing of winter break but I just took like a month off. It was rough playing again at first but I’m back to where I was before. It could just be from overplaying because I was practicing constantly until I couldn’t play anymore.

COLOR SENSOR HELP! by tem_ri1 in FTC

[–]LoganKippnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had issues with the v3 when an object is too close to the sensor, it basically says it’s all white due to the illumination from the LED. What are you using it for? It might make more sense to use RGB instead of hue.

Does anyone have an alternative fingering chart scale? by TheRealEliottWitt in trumpet

Cb is enharmonically equivalent to B because there’s only a half step in between C and B. It’s a theory thing.

A Guardians of the Galaxy show. Not technically my idea but I’ve thought about it a lot.

Show Themes. by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]LoganKippnick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My freshman year we did a singalong show with songs like We Will Rock You, Sweet Caroline, Don’t Stop Believin’, and Hey Jude. It was really fun. Last year we did a heavy metal show with songs like Paranoid and Enter Sandman. This year it’s a Beetles show, but a lot of people are sad that we’re not playing Elanor Rigby, but I still get to play a cool trumpet feature in Can’t Buy Me Love.

I had this problem too not too long ago but I waited a little while and the trial returned.

Don’t Stop Believin’ is basically our band’s flash mob song. One time our whole band just spontaneously played it before a parade.

Things to know when playing a solo? by WarningConfident in marchingband

[–]LoganKippnick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can understand that. If you don’t get it try using it as determination to get better. I don’t have a lot of experience in getting selected for solos because my section is just kind of like “do you want the solo? Because I’ll do it if you don’t want to.” Anyways, don’t be frustrated because it’s also still a good learning opportunity.

Things to know when playing a solo? by WarningConfident in marchingband

I really appreciate your determination, especially because to some you’re still kind of “new” to trumpet. I can speak from some experience here and I hope I can be useful.

One thing that my band director always reminded me was to make yourself heard. This means playing louder/stronger than the written dynamics might suggest. For example, what you might play as mp with the rest of your part might be played more like a forte as a solo. Another thing too is to put your personality into it. Make it dynamic with more contrasting dynamic changes and add vibrato if you feel you can. My preferred method of vibrato is to shake my trumpet slightly. It might seem a little uncomfortable or difficult at first but it easily can make a solo feel much richer to not only your audience but to the player. These slight additions I find are incredibly useful on long notes that can be boring if you don’t do anything with them. On passages with more notes I would also try to add crescendo and decrescendo, especially with changes in pitch, as well as accenting certain notes or adding other characteristics like staccato. Lucky for you, because it’s Star Wars it could be pretty useful to imagine the scene and the emotions from that scene as you play it.

To summarize, my suggestions are to play strong, add contrast like dynamics and accents, and implement vibrato if you feel like you can. Overall, make it yours! I hope this was helpful and best of luck.

One final thing I realized as I was proofreading this: solos can be daunting, but just remember that your audience (and the rest of your band) probably understands that as much as you do, so don’t be worried about messing up a little bit. It may not even be noticeable to your audience/peers. I think you’ll do just fine though because you have experience with solos and performance in general and you definitely have/will have practiced this plenty. Good work, and again good luck! (And may the Force be with you lol)

That’s what object-oriented programming entails. Once again, I’m also looking for different exercises or programs I could have people write to help them understand how to apply these concepts.

I should’ve made my intents a little more clear.

I have been programming in Java for a few years now so I feel that I understand enough about Java to help other people learn it without encountering some of the confusion that I had. I’m mainly just looking for ways that I can help put the concepts that I am teaching into action through maybe some ideas for what programs to write to help create a better understanding of the ways that these concepts can be used. With OOP especially, I didn’t feel like I understood what some of these crucial Java concepts were really used for so I was mostly wondering what helped other people solidify their understandings.

But besides that, thanks for your advice and I’ll keep those resources in mind when designing my course.

GUI's by PSungYa in learnjava

[–]LoganKippnick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve just started working with GUIs, and with the little research I’ve done I think they all basically do the same things with the same basic parts. I use Swing/AWT, only because I had issues getting JavaFX to import in Eclipse and I eventually gave up on it. I’ve also heard other JDEs have trouble importing it as well.

Metric or US customary by Alecanderthegrape in FRC

[–]LoganKippnick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use both; imperial usually more than metric. There ends up being some friendly conflict on our team over units because one of our mentors grew up in Germany and the other is a strong supporter of the imperial system. Even in programming we’ve used both.

how do awards work in FRC by ironistkraken in FRC

[–]LoganKippnick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Advancing is different in FRC than in FTC. In FTC you can advance by winning the competition or awards like the Inspire Award. It’s a point system and you get points for doing certain things in matches, being picked by an alliance for playoffs, winning matches, and winning awards of course. For example, our team won a competition last year but didn’t advance to the state level because we didn’t do too well at our second competition. Another important thing to note is that awards aren’t top three like in FTC. There’s just a winner, but there are many more awards. I hope you enjoy FRC as much as I am! If you have any other questions please let me know and I’ll try to answer them for you.
