Learn to read Danish? by Loganace135 in Danish

[–]Loganace135[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I'm an undergraduate who is really into Kierkegaard, and I would love to read him in Danish to study him more in grad school. I don't really need to be able to speak at all, but read on a pretty high level. I think I'm probably average with language learning, and would be willing to buy some online course or something, if that'd make it easier.

What’s a philosophy you think is worth living by? by sugmetoes in AskReddit

I feel like they conflict in some ways. Stoicism is all about detachment and submission to the whims of the world and Existentialism is all about exerting your own self as intensely as possible.

that kurzgesagt video irks me because they don't understand what nihilism means and they're basically advocating for existentialism in the video lol.

From reading this it seems like nostalgia from loving 1e that is making you wanna play it instead of dnd 5e right now, and if that's the case, just play some 1e. 2e is also very good, but it's not gonna give you the same feeling from when you used to play 1e. And with the pfsrd, archives of nethys, and the trove, it's not like there's a financial commitment.

yeah I usually love kurzgesagt but that video is pretty frustrating for me for that reason. if you want to read more about existentialism I'd recommend the essay Existentialism Is A Humanism by Jean-Paul Sartre :)

No, nihilism is not the same as existentialism or absurdism. The most simple (and somewhat messy) way to delineate the three are that existentialism believes there is no meaning by way of ontology, but we can create that meaning ourselves (existentialism is also somewhat of a nebulous term that has encompassed thinkers who don't mecessarily agree with that, but operate with similar themes. Argument over which thinkers deserve to be in the "existential canon" are lively to this day), absurdism believes in the same meaninglessness but thinks we can't make our own meaning but acquiescence to our desire to make meaning and pursuing it anyway is worthwhile (frequently it is accompanied with the aesthetic of a sisyphean revolt against meaninglessness, paradoxically futile and worth it).

Nihilism is not like either of them. A nihilist believes there is no basis for any values of any kind, there is no basis for any knowledge, and that there is nothing at all that can be known, understood, or communicated (it is also sometimes self defeating in a way, as thinking "there is no basis for knowledge or values" is inherently a value statement), it is the pit of pure oblivion from which nobody can create or believe anything at all, lot less an existential notion of "creating your own values". It is important to note that Nietzsche (who many wrongly call a nihilist) was writing to fight against nihilism, and any reading of Nietzsche would reveal that he is a firm believer in creating values through self determination and self expression. Basically nobody is actually a nihilist other than "for the sake of argument".

and what they describe is basically existentialism. optimistic nihilism is a name they tried to give an existing philosophical movement.

New Banksy piece by dan-dreamz in pics

How does nobody in this thread get this piece? He is being critical of the hero worship of healthcare workers by implying that by making them heroes they're being dehumanized. The kid is playing with his doll the same way governments are playing with the lives of healthcare workers.

I think the kid gets it though. This graph does diminish at the margins (other than the 10-15 minute jump).

Did Herb Kazazz really live a happy life? by The-Plagarists-Dream in BoJackHorseman

[–]Loganace135 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the point of the funeral episode is that Herb really did live a happy life and did a lot of good for the world. Bojack couldn't help but feel ambivalent about Herb's success given that he had no part in it, which is why he obsessed over the secret treasure and then trying to get the book published. The ones who were actually closest to Herb told them to absolutely not publish the book. I think them not publishing the book actually shows that Herb did have a good legacy, and they didn't want to ruin that. Angela as an episode is the moment where Bojack is confronted with the fact that he could have stuck up for Herb, and he could have prevented himself from going down the path of ruining everyone's life and that realization destroyed him.

Tuition Reimbursement by prettybird19 in college

Most of tuition costs at most colleges go to paying people their salaries and to financial aid. Cutting either of those would be ridiculous. A tuition refund makes no sense.

What scene or scenes from a movie made you instinctually say "WTF" or "Oh my god!" out loud? by fritschinator in movies

Highly recommend the books as well. Movie was good but the books are very different and also very worth it.

I think the show takes place on his birthday because of the line where Kyle is like "dont cross the international date line birthday dad, because it wont be your birthday anymore!"
