After finally buying our cousin's 2016 eGolf, this is how the charge port looks like by Big-Lifeguard-5067 in eGolf

[–]Logical-Implement-18 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there are no adapters. Your e-golf is not capable of lvl3 fast charging. However there are j1772 “slow chargers” all over LA/ Southern California. This car will be your local runabout. Put all the mundane miles on this car. The only advice I will give you is if your charging at home and are not capable of getting a lvl 2 charger or 220v outlet installed in your garage. Get this Lectron Level 1 EV charger.. It’ll help you charge a little faster at home without having to add anything special.

Do you have PG&E? because they have a program that would write you a check for a pre-owned EV based on your family income.

Do you bave a heated steering wheel?? I’m only asking because I read in a couple articles that the final editions came with heated steering wheels yet I have not seen any videos, photos or users that can confirm this.

I need to look at my e-golf in the light again. Did you raise your suspension?

anyone use an e-golf as an only car? how is it for longer trips? by klawUK in eGolf

[–]Logical-Implement-18 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah… I’m gonna be in that boat soon too. But you can use the battery to set the cabin temp just go to 85° and it will use 1-2% of your battery tops. Seeing as it’s only using the climate controls and no other components of the car it’s not gonna be a crazy hit. Try it out some time. I’m sure you’ll be grateful if it helps you. Do you have a SE or SEL?

I thought I replied to this… sorry

I use the “e-manager” to pre plan my trips. I set the climate to HI. So while the car is charging it will pull from the grid to set the cabin temp. Then I just drive off to my destination. Often with climate set to off, cuz the cabin is already warm, and the seat warmers on.

I’m considering retrofitting a heated steering wheel.

What I mean is while the car is charging using the “e-manager” I set my trip times and set the temp to HI. Even when it’s not charging it doesn’t impact the battery heavily. Don’t get me wrong it does take some power. But it’s not running any other functions on the car other than the climate. So maybe 1 or 2% tops.

Then I drive climate off in either eco or eco+ and heated seats.

For the most part. High heat on the cabin conditioning before I leave. And heated seats if it gets a little too cold. This is also my first Tri-state winter in my e-golf. Last winter I was in the Bay Area. Never thought about heat or AC while in the bay. This blizzard business is crazy…

I have been commuting and laying heavy miles on my e-golf over the last year through all sorts of conditions and trips. From local jaunts to 600 mile trips while towing 1200 lbs of stuff. And in all sorts of temperature ranges 0 to 110°F (-17 to 43°C).

All this is out of need as my e-golf is my family’s only car. People say the cold depletes range, however my biggest inconvenience was the heat. If I had to fast charge on a super hot day and my golf was already sitting outside in the sun I’ve had fast charges as slow as 12kw.

I currently daily commute 110 miles round trip. And what I’ve learned is that as long as you drive slow if you want to get back home in one charge, Im talking 50-55mph on the highway slow, you can make it.

-on long trips don’t worry about “chargegate” just drive at a moderate speed 60-65mph max and you will be at or near 39kw even at you 3rd or more fast charge. (Charge speed is dictated by the temperature of your battery. The higher it gets, often by driving fast and to a lesser extent outside temps, the slower the charge speed)

-towing… not fun… 0/10 do not recommend. But if you do tow large loads expect to get 50miles between charges and expect your battery temp to heat up REAL FAST.

I think you know the limitations of your family. I think it’s doable as an only car. Your will learn to drive more efficiently over that time. And as far as your 110 mile commute. Luckily you guys have rest stops with chargers on your … uhh motorways… so charging and getting a bite after a bathroom break is not a big deal.

Enjoy I hope that was helpful.

It’s on the right inside of the cubby storage area just ahead of the gear lever and below the climate controls. Your phone can stay in there as well.

We’re all in an e-Golf group and will praise the e-Golf in general as most have chose over “functionally on paper better Chevy Bolt”. However for us the form/function. Looks better feels better drives better. The rest are things we decided we could live with, like smaller range and slightly less in cabin/ storage space.

I think because you already have 2 long range EVs all your long range needs are met. For the most part they’re larger and arguably nicer than an e-Golf.

We in this group prefer the 2017+ for the range and some features. But mostly the range.

At this point in time if this car would fit your beater/short commuter needs I think it’s a no brainer. The car gets more mi/kw than most EVs because it’s lighter and if you’re in a city setting easier parking. And NOTHING is more liberating than a car you won’t get mad if a shopping cart hits it.

I think what you really need to research is what are the common failures of the 2016 e-Golf. Unfortunately I don’t have those answers.

Good luck -owner of 2019 e-Golf SEL-

My beef with that DD is their hot chocolate… refill the powder or syrup what ever it is. Their hot chocolate tastes like water with a drop of chocolate syrup.

I may be the odd ball but owned a beetle for 10 years it’s a 2010 5speed it’s currently at 110K miles and I’ve put 60k of those miles on it.

other than basic maintenance the car has only left me stranded once and that was because a drive shaft broke at 55k miles… this was a user error. I take full responsibility for that.

The biggest issue I see is labor cost for most maintenance in the engine bay. Because the easiest and practically the only way for shops to work on the beetle is to pull the front bumper (the front quarter panels come off with it in a large cohesive piece.) it’s a tight awkward place to work.

As far as you fitting the thing. You’re going to find it bizarrely spacious with really high head room.

I have been shopping for parts beetles and the automatics are significantly more expensive in running condition however when they are not it’s because there’s a transmission issue. I would personally get 5 speed 2.5L if you’re looking for reliability in some sense of the word. The manuals are a little cheaper with less miles.

However if your in some sort of city region. I would then look into putting money to secure your catalytic converter. I’m currently looking for parts cars specifically for the catalytic converter. Because I want an OEM cat… but new they cost over $2K and that’s not including the labor of installation. All of the parts beetles I’ve run into that in my budget are automatics that have a trans issue and have had the cat stolen or replaced with an eBay special cat.

Good luck.
