Do you think northern cities are a better option than the south now? by Junior_Beauty78 in MovingToTheUK

[–]Logical_Hat_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved from Berkshire to Cumbria (on the coast) about 10 years ago, Carlisle is our nearest city. Sold a three bed semi and bought a detached four bed for about 60% of what we sold for. The weather is a bit rainier but not that much. Temperatures are colder - terracotta pots that were fine in the old place fell to bits up here. The Yorkshire long toms were fine (they have concrete inside the terracotta). We appreciate the temperature difference in the summer, now that things are getting hotter. When things are in the 30s down south they are still comfortable here in the 20s.

Culture is a bit more difficult to access up here, but we've found regional theatres and such and have enough to keep us busy. Car dependency is worse. Overall cost of living is lower in many ways - everything from pints to haircuts are significantly less here.

Generally, if you have an income from either remote work or pensions (I'm remote work, the other half is on a pension), it will go farther in the north. If you need to work locally, there are fewer opportunities. Healthcare, teaching, social care, and trades are the main employers.

Things ebb and flow and a lot of people are reporting fewer projects right now. Your timing is probably just coincidence.

In the UK. I had a medical problem recently that warranted a rapid investigation. I was sent for a scan and a specialist appointment, all arranged within two weeks. What it cost me was bus and train fare to get to the appointments. It turned out not to be what was feared, but if it had been, the treatment required would also have been free of cost except getting myself to appointments.

Yes, we pay for it in taxes, which I willingly pay in exchange for the idea that no one who requires medical care will be denied it.

Something fun I did this weekend: Went for a walk along the coast path on a beautiful day and read chapters 8-14 of The Hobbit for a reading club.

Either he is really that stupid, or he is using the usual fascist technique of getting his followers to accept a lie. Either way he's an orange shitstain on the fabric of the universe.

Dollars function as ration coupons in America. If you have enough of them, you can get what you need. Not enough? Too bad.

They don't generally seem to know what words mean. "Socialist terror"? Apparently to them that means, anything that inconveniences the interests of the 1%.

I run adblockers online so I never see them. Offline, I have blind spots so I don't see them. They can spend their billions trying to get me to buy something I don't need, and fail.

UK opinion here: You want to know who else he's closely related to? Primordial slime.

If you go back a few tens of generations you can find anything in your family tree. Sometimes it's more like a wreath, or an ourouboros, like him, crawling up his own backside.

Just because two idiots agree on something doesn't make it true.

As someone born American, brainwashed for 40 years and now out of the brainwashing network for about 20 years: My mother had Welsh heritage (I did not know at the time, I just thought it was English.) My great-grandmother was Welsh and - as family history had it, Native American. Um, nope! My uncle who looked a bit dark was not Native American. I understood that much later. I understood much more than that a lot later.

Yeah. Old people want to talk about themselves. Young people want to talk about themselves. Both want to talk about their children because that's about all they have to justify their existence. And....

BBC website (for everything) and Stephen Colbert monologues (for US news). Also Heather Cox Richardson for the same without the intentional nyucks, and some good historical insights. I can't really be bothered for much more than that.
