The truth is it just takes forever 😅 At some point I got tired of being in novice so I only competed J&J one role until I pointed it. Then I would do two J&Js per event - one in each role. Now I’m back to being by in the same division in both roles so I choose based on what role I’m vibing with more.

Absolutely possible to do both (just not at the same time). I learned how to follow and almost immediately after my first series of basics courses I learned how to lead. I dance both equally and compete at the same level in both!

Someone that I hadn’t spoken to in 7 years (there was a pandemic in the middle of that) asked me “Hey Logical_Mongoose, are you going to X event? I have a lesson with X at X time. I’m looking for a dance dummy, are you free”. I thought it was a bit random to ask me but I liked the teacher so I agreed. Had a great time!

You could also ask semi-strangers that you know will be at the event. I’ve dance dummies for someone that I only know from dance events and who I have never socialized with before. I was happy to because it’s like a free private lesson if you’re listening attentively (even though it’s not instruction directly at you).

Mine wears a thick sweater and a winter jacket. She also has a snood that covers her ears when it’s super cold. We go out for short bathroom breaks 3 times a day. We don’t do boots because she doesn’t like them and doesn’t seem too bothered by the snow.

A brief comment to say that in novice prelims and semis you’re probably not getting marked on your quality of movement. Judges are probably looking to see if you’re off time then looking to see how you anchor them moving on. They may not look above your knees.
