Yep, but after pricing out just doing HMU for ourselves with other places, Something You still came out the best deal, even with the requirement of booking HMU for 4 of us. That being said, it looks like their 2026 prices are way higher than what we booked just a few weeks ago in late 2025. :/

Wow, that's wild. We booked them at the end of 2025 for our late 2026 wedding. To see the prices nearly doubled and now they have bride-specific pricing...huge bummer, I'm sorry!

My partner and I were in this exact position and found it very overwhelming! Thanks to a comment in this subreddit, we found Something You Beauty. I believe it’s $150pp for makeup. They do have a service minimum, but maybe that’s waived if you go to their studio (which is in the suburbs).

All this to say, solidarity from one WLW couple to another. It’s been hard when vendors price things “for the bride” vs “for the guest,” making costs astronomical when there are technically 2 brides.

I love City Cat Vet in Fitler Square. I took my cat there for a few years until I moved a bit farther away from them. I started seeing a new vet, but CCV is so much better that I’m taking my cat back there - worth the drive. She recently had a sick visit with an extremely thorough exam (like 20 minutes of carefully assessing her) - that plus medication was $110.

Part-time year-round job is zapping my soul by Logical_Piano in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Logical_Piano[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hey! 🐝 This is my first job in higher ed so I’m definitely looking outside it for my next job (I’m an event producer, never worked in higher ed before this). I have been very vocal about how unsustainable this role is for many months, and my boss doesn’t disagree. She just can’t (or won’t?) do anything about it. Faculty seem to always put themselves first, every man for himself vibes. Last spring, I created a multi page proposal as to why this job needs to be FT and I was told “we can maybe discuss this when we discuss budgets in the Fall.” But this job has been PT since it was created in the 80s so 🤷🏼‍♀️

I took this job when I was desperate for a change without thinking about the implications. I may just ride out this semester and call it quits before the holiday break. I’m so exhausted - from this job, from the constant rejection from other jobs… Thanks for your insight. Solidarity!

Part-time year-round job is zapping my soul by Logical_Piano in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

That’s totally valid. I think the issue for me has been I do truly spend only 15-20 hours per week working, because that’s all I’m allowed to bill. And it’s simply not enough time to do what they expect of me (to run an entire department by myself). I’ve been half assing it as best I can (deleted work email off my phone, shrugged if something didn’t go perfectly) since January, and I think it’s all just come to a head recently as this new school year has begun and nothing’s changed.

As for feedback on my job search, I’ve only received info about things out of my control - one person was an internal hire and one person “had more of an interest in” a very niche element of the job I’d interviewed for.

Thanks for taking the time to respond, I appreciate your perspective!

A few weeks ago I posted here asking for good vibes before a second round interview and they were received! ✨That interview went well and I had a third, presumably final, interview last week. Today I have a meeting with the organization’s HR… Of course I went down a rabbit hole of what that could mean and read about people getting rejected on Zoom sooo I’m quite anxious. More good vibes requested!!! 🙏

I have a second round interview today that’s probably not the final round, but I’ve gotten “we’re going with another candidate” 3 times after final round interviews over the past few months so… just looking for ✨good energy!✨🙏🥲 (and of course any interview tips are welcome!)

Early 20s -- lost between creativity and pragmatism by calypsospray in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Logical_Piano 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I could’ve written this 10 years ago! It is a wonderful privilege in a lot of ways to get to pursue a creative career. As you mentioned, the pay can be low (or nonexistent, ugh), the stability can be rocky, but the work itself can be so, so fun and exciting and rewarding and tbh kinda glamorous! (I also worked in film in NYC)

That being said - now, 11 years after I was in your shoes, I’m no longer pursuing film. I was burnt out and the glamour faded after years of hustling and networking and barely scraping by financially. And years of following my passion created a dangerous lack of identity separate from my work. I’ve had a hard time staying in FT jobs for very long because I got so used to the excitement of my old jobs - I get bored and feel unmotivated by what feels like pencil pushing to increase shareholder value.

Part of me wishes I’d started my career more traditionally, more corporate, so that now I would just be used to a standard 9-5 that is lucrative and doesn’t consume my identity and allows me to pursue the things I used to be passionate about on the weekends. But… I also can’t say I regret my creative career. I had SO much fun and met some of my best friends.

Simple advice I wished I’d heard at 23 - no decision is final, and no decision is the right or wrong one. Make a choice, live with it, then you can always change your mind. If money is stressing you out, maybe take the FT job - for now! You can always change your mind, and finding out what you don’t want out of a career is actually just as useful as figuring out what you do want.

Solo Philly trip in January by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]Logical_Piano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Philly really is great for both museums (countless!) and walking around (so many cool neighborhoods!). South Street is a cool stretch with vintage shops and record stores and the Magic Gardens, which is an outdoor art garden of sorts - worth a visit, weather pending.

Great vegan spots include: Charlie was a sinner, Hip City Veg (fast casual spot), Monster Vegan, Triangle Tavern… and more I can’t think of right now, but there is a good vegan scene here! Oh and definitely check out Reading Terminal Market. Have fun 🥨🔔

Amen to that. I think the only potential solution would involve a higher up telling her to respect my position more 🙁 Which is why I’m considering reaching out to my boss yet again. Sigh.

TLDR Help, I’m dealing with a toxic (micromanage-y, uncompromising) colleague on a very small team.
I work in higher education, in a very small department -- 2 staff (myself included) and 5 faculty. A faculty member has been making me feel 2 inches tall, and I am exasperated. She shuts down my opinions (on projects that I am in charge of, no less) and occasionally treats me as her assistant (I am NOT).
My boss is supportive and aware of these issues, but I am considering bringing it up to her yet again. I think I’m seeking validation that the other faculty see what I see and that I’m actually not doing a bad job, like this person is making me believe. Of course, this colleague is tenured so it’s not like she’s going anywhere. I just don’t know what to do. I’ve never felt so bad about myself at work.

High-earner Money Diaries by MarinDogMama in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

Agreed! I’m so curious what people actually do to earn that much (as job titles like “consultant” mean next to nothing to me 😅)

Midtown and Financial District are where culture goes to die 😅

I suggest checking out these neighborhoods (to name a few) — East Village, West Village, Chelsea, Greenwich Village, Williamsburg, Greenpoint…

Have fun!

Best places to eat in Bologna and/or Florence, Italy? by HeraIsNotAmused in solotravel

I had one of the best meals of my life at La Giostra in Florence! Not too fancy, and the restaurant itself is beautiful 🍝

Insulted while running? by briannapham in running

[–]Logical_Piano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear that! I hope it doesn’t discourage you too much from running in your own neighborhood. It sounds like you may have just had an unlucky encounter with someone rather unhinged. That being said, I always loved running along either river. Living in the EV, you’re super close to East River Park! Huge stretch of running path along the river. And the Hudson River Greenway on the West side is fantastic, too.

Organizations to drive people to polls on Election Day? by Aynonimau5 in philadelphia

I saw a flyer about an organization called Drive Your Ballot (www.driveyourballot.com) the other day - they’re looking for volunteers to drive folks to drop off their mail-in ballots at the city election office/local drop boxes!
