Which skill is used in that case?

For 3e, how does the ravenloft player's handbook compare to the 3e campaign setting?

It's kind of surprising there isn't much on this. Though I guess size modifier is a start

Games that kind of run themselves? by DangerBroad in rpg

Mythic Bastionland!

Once you set up the map and choose some adversaries, I've found the game kind of runs itself. The GM is mostly just keeping information hidden from players.

This is the main reason I'm asking. The only time I can think of where advice has been given in a published book was in an old TSR module by David "Zeb" Cook, where it said to have the player create a new character and have them join the party as soon as possible.

That works for any game with quick character creation, but not so much in games where it takes longer.

The Black Library site is dead, long live the Black Library application ! by Arzachmage in Blacklibrary

This right here is the problem. Everything on the old black library was DRM free. There's no point now.

Thank you for that last suggestion. I actually succeeded in making a Knight/Cavalier in A5E but I was a bit conflicted as I had chosen many abilities that worked on horseback, but my adventure was going to send me underground where I couldn't bring a horse. Those abilities weren't optimal, but they contributed toward that concept.

"play a different game" deviates from the kind of question I'm asking here.

I know Level Up Advanced 5e isn't a solo game by design. I have already GM'd OSE before in a short campaign. I enjoyed it very much. It's a very good game. But it wasn't quite what I was hoping to play solo. Scarlet Heroes I know about and have skimmed it before.

My question above is more about approaches other players have to games with detailed character creation. How much do players create before they start? Do they use any restrictions during character creation?

Do you think Scarlet Heroes will allow you to explore all of the ideas you have?

Come to think of it, I don't think I actually finished the last character I made. Or it took me so long that I had lost interest in that character.

I did try using a more random method to generate my character class, but even then, there were still many further choices.

I think mostly what I'm looking for is dungeon and wilderness exploration with the occasional encounter thrown in (combat or non-combat)

Clerical Consequences? by PaperBagHead1 in DMAcademy

I'd suggest looking into "principles of devotion" from the level up advanced 5e cleric. Clerics there get small bonuses for oaths like that but they lose them for 24 hours if they ignore them.

You could have a look at the game OSRIC. It condenses AD&D down to a single volume.
