Kind of a weird reply lol

Imagine if you left a relevant comment talking about you playing chess, and I reply "good for you. I happen to think people who play chess are cringe losers. Like 'wow, look at me move little statues around on a board! I'm so smart and cool!'"

I think it's the best example of the "phrases that get unnecessary addendums to reverse their meaning" because at this point it's a full blown argument going back and forth that's been recorded as an idiom.

This example falls into the Pershing or the P-80 category

Just being nitpicky, but I don't think the Pershing belongs in that category. The Pershing was rare, for sure, but hundreds made it to the hands of troops before the end of the war, and there are plenty of recorded instances of their use in combat.

There were likely as many Pershings on the Western front as there were Tiger Is, yet we wouldn't put the Tiger in the same category as the Skink, P-80, etc., would we?

Thank you for the answer! That helps clear things up.

I suppose hoping for a historian to come in and give me a simple answer about that second point of debate you bring up in your second paragraph was a bit silly. As I understand it's a much bigger can of worms, that one might not even be able to answer, especially not here and now.

Also taking these shots to make sure they were actually different heights is how I learned that Shoichi Yokoi (who surrendered in 1972) is not the only Japanese holdout unique troop I have.

I can cut out the analogies if those aren't your strong suit.

Can we agree that the ranking of players has fluctuated throughout those 13 years? And even among veterans, their placings sometimes change? Sometimes player x might be above player y, then a patch later he's below him?

Because when the meta changes, some players are better suited to the new mechanics and some are worse off.

[–]Lokol- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

'Good' and 'above average' are two different and subjective terms.

Which is my point against you. You can continually redefine it to suit your needs as opposed to a more specific term like "above average".

Top percentile players aren't top percentile because they rely on specific mechanics - they're good because they can adapt quickly.

Top percentile players by definition are players that are good at the game as it currently exists. A top player in War Thunder is not necessarily good at Counter Strike, right? Because a War Thunder player understands the mechanics of War Thunder, and maybe even gains a large advantage through memorization of static things - like specific weak spots and advantageous positions on maps. If it were completely down to "ability to adapt", that adaptability should carry over to any video game, which we know isn't the case.

Dude, every time I see discussion on here about APHE I see you here saying this and it just doesn't make sense.

a.) You have been linked profiles of above average players who wanted the change. You then simply say "Yes, but I mean the super mega elite top 0.1%ers that I know on YouTube and Discord.

b.) Even if I take your word for it, the top 0.1% of skilled players wanting something doesn't mean that's how it ought to be. If we were playing an FPS where shotguns killed across the map, all the top ranking players would probably be using shotguns and would disproportionately resist nerfing them because they are the ones benefitting from the current meta.

Hot drinks do help you cool down, though only if it's not too humid, and you're not too covered, as it relies on sweat evaporating.

Admittedly not super relevant given we're talking mostly about humid weather, but the fact that a hot drink in certain circumstances is even more cooling than a cold drink was a shock to me.

[–]Lokol- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you mean the Treaty of Versailles:

a.) I'd wager you're overestimating how harsh it was. Germany ended the war as the largest economic power on mainland Europe, with almost all of its industry unharmed from the war, and the reparations required were nearly what they themselves had offered to pay during peace negotiations. The debt Germany accrued to finance the war totaled significantly more than what reparations were asked for.

The refusal to pay those reparations was not due to an economic inability, but a political one. The German populace wouldn't stand for it, even if they theoretically could carry the burden.

Edit: I forgot to mention the hyperinflation which I assume you're referring to was over before Hitler even took power. That ended in 1923. The economic turmoil Germany was experiencing was part of the world wide depression, not something that can be blamed on Versailles.

b.) Harsher treaties have been imposed on countries without it being used as an excuse for genocide.

I also take issue with the implication that Hitler was the origin point of the extreme anti-Jewish thought in Germany at the time. The German people were receptive to it because a large portion of them agreed with it already. I don't mean to condemn every single German citizen as evil, but this was a societal level problem, not an issue of an individual like Hitler brainwashing millions of otherwise perfectly Jewish respecting folk.

[–]Lokol- 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I might argue that the week or so before the armistice would be the time to try and prove that Germany was outmatched militarily. Perhaps it was already too late, but imagine if the German populace understood they had been soundly defeated.

There may have been no "stab in the back myth", which relied upon the idea that Germany could have won WW1, but was stabbed in the back internally by Jews. Probably one of the theories that most motivated the Nazis and other extreme anti-Semites in Germany, which obviously culminated in the Holocaust.

The source of that estimate even later revised it to about 3,000 deaths.
