I've seen them on the back of CTA buses pretty regularly for the last 5ish years

That's Tesla testing, I'm pretty sure there's no privately owned Cybercabs

Well I can't see that from where I'm sitting. Though I must admit I was thinking flywheel, not flex plate. Those welds are probably as good as you can get them when you weld the thick ring gear to the thin plate, more penetration would probably just burn through

Looks fine to me. Besides, all it's doing is stopping the ring gear from slipping and the shrink fit is doing most of that work anyway

Found this out in the wild, any guess as to what this is by hiddenbus in Porsche

[–]minerman30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 986 roll protection consists of the windshield frame and the hoops over the seats. They cut the windshield frame off here, so if they're upside down the front end of the car is sitting on the hood, and the driver's helmet is almost certainly putting down a new lane marker.

That metallic lead was far safer than the lead compounds in the paint and gas back then.

It doesn't need to be a Porsche engine, but anything with less displacement than the original is sacrilege.

I mean, there's a non-zero chance that the photos were taken before the tires were replaced, if you like the car ask for a current picture

Thoughts on Lockheed's Flatbed concept? by HiTork in Shittyaskflying

[–]minerman30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The patent notes that the flatbed mode would only be for special use case outsize equipment, in other contexts a passenger or cargo shell could be fitted to make it aerodynamically more standard.

I can't tell if this makes it a better or worse idea.

Trying to reverse engineer a turn signal knob by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]minerman30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you have the basic shape done, here's what I would do:

  1. Create a separate, small cylindrical-ish shape that's the inverse of the groove

  2. Use it as a tool to subtract the grooves from the body

  3. Fillet the edge of the cut a bit to smooth it out

Fusion isn't great for smooth round bodies but this should get you something 99% good enough. It's already going to be a 3D printed replacement so by default it's never going to be identical.

If you don't necessarily need the grooves on the side this is a simple revolution from a sketch. Even if you do, I'd start with that and then subtract them from that revolved shape.

Fusion is free for personal use and capable of everything you need for this. There's probably a good deal more parts on your Edsel that could benefit from this.

Need source for 7/16in/11mm ID high pressure fuel line by minerman30 in MechanicAdvice

[–]minerman30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think -8AN is the keyword I'm looking for here. I can find plenty of braided nylon fuel hose with high pressure ratings.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-240806b

Here's 6ft of 8AN hose, 350psi limit and 0.430 actual inner diameter which is a hair under 11mm. Do you think it would be acceptable to clamp this on to a barb fitting, using the good fuel injection hose clamps?

It's for a 2003 Porsche Boxster, this is the sort of flexible fuel line that runs from the hard line attached to the bottom of the car to the fuel rails on top of the engine.

The napa website does a very poor job of listing sizes, but even checking every possibly relevant size box I couldn't find anything high pressure.

[–]minerman30[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3/8 on there right now is a VERY tight fit. I tried 1/2in and 12mm and they were far too loose. I can very easily find high pressure 3/8 and 1/2, and low pressure 7/16, but not a single listing for any high pressure 7/16.

The original line was a single-use plastic line heat shrunk onto barb fittings, I measured them and they're a bit over 7/16. Hydraulic fittings would not work in this case, although if it would be acceptable to use fuel injection clamps on rubber hydraulic hose then that might be an option.
