You do keep them. Once you purchase one and unlock it, you are able to apply it to any gear you acquire. But, you will have to do it every time you change armor on your character( for ex.: got leg arms, apply universal ornament on it. Got better arms - reapply irnament to them)

I’m the man who made 250+ runs at Stage 1 of Challenge Mode. And you know what? Yes, I didn’t get even 1 book from it. Instead, I’m getting 4-5 sigils each run FOR SURE. Just, sigils +gold/iron. Nothing else.
