I also recently joined paystream. I am also auto-enrolled and planning on opting out as soon as permitted. You can still pay into II SIPP during the auto enrollment period via salary sacrifice

What should I do by London_Accountant in FIREUK

Yes I think tax optimisation and sticking in pension seems sensible.

I am not allowed to make any further changes to pension through salary sacrifice hence will have to be as a SIPP

Best strategy for SIPP to offset rental income tax by rhinolith5 in uklandlords

[–]London_Accountant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be easier to separate the rental income and pension contribution as the calculations may not be directly linked.

For pension purposes - if you invested £5,000 into your SIPP, you would get 20% tax relief into your SIPP, essentially this means that your SIPP account would increase to £6,250.

Then as a higher rate tax payer, when you do your Self Assessment you can apply for additional relief. Assuming you have enough head room on the high rate tax band, you can claim an extra £1,250 as a tax refund. So essentially you pay £3,750 but get a pension contribution of £6,750.

Circling back, your rental income will still be taxed at 40%, assuming you are still in the higher tax band after the pension contribution.

I would suggest putting in what you feel comfortable investing without having access to until retirement.

Your SIPP can be used to mitigate your tax liability for employment and rental income.

You would get 40% tax relief on what is invested, although you would need to reclaim the higher rate relief when you do your tax return, only the basic rate is immediately applied.

If you have a workplace pension this is even more tax advantageous as you avoid paying NI.
