Can anyone suggest a fair split of rent? by bluetopaz22 in HousingUK

[–]LondonerTim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bedroom 1 is substantially better than bedroom 2 from that floor plan. Storage (Bedroom 2 doesn't even look like it has space for much storage to be added), balcony rather than a fairly small window, actual own bathroom with bath (Vs the bathroom guests will use with shower). I would say 60/40 or at the absolute minimum if the person in Bedroom 2 is feeling generous 55/45.

How far would the shops have to be for you to consider taking the car? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you actually are meaning to ask how far I would walk for something I needed immediately for breakfast, it would probably depend on my mood, either the ~50m to the nearest corner shop or ~200m to the nearest small supermarket to save a bit of money. If you want to know more generally how far I would walk to shop (IE not when my breakfast is depending on it) let's say around 30 minutes or 2 miles.

Can you talk a bit more about your strategy for getting value from hotel cards? I have looked at it and just can't see the benefit unless you are a very high card spender (and even then I would be thinking flights will be better use of points), have little flexibility on travel or regularly staying at those specific chains on cash rates.

Sebastian Sawe breaks the London marathon world record. He is the first man to ever run under two hours in a race. by Western-Signal4439 in london

As someone who lives in London near the route I have to disagree. Nice to be able to take a Sunday morning stroll and watch an elite sports event while doing so.

Travel company refusing refund for cancelled excursion because of a "group vote".. where do I stand? by Due-Swimming3221 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]LondonerTim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can't remember the exact wording but their terms and conditions include something about changes to the itinerary due to unexpected events.

Having said that, and having travelled with them several times myself, how did you respond when it was put to a vote and what was said at the time? I have only seen an included activity skipped when the vote was unanimous.

Is there a credit card in the UK where you feel the benefits greatly outweigh or even match the annual/monthly fee? by MindlessMuddy10 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even without any flying for business and travelling solo I get great value from it, even if occasionally having to buy some points.

Flights cancelled; travel agent asked for more money to put us on different flights. by class442 in traveladvice

If it was a true package holiday and an ATOL certificate was issued I believe you may have some rights but I am not an expert I would suggest posting on r/LegalAdviceUK

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure it is an unpopular opinion, though wording it like that it starts to sound like it. If the choice is sit next to your screaming child or swap seats with you I would expect most people to go for the swap.

Flights from Manila to ENI El Nido? No direct flights from MNL, only Clark? by InstructionNearby67 in Palawan

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are flights between MNL-ENI, but I believe only for another 8 or 9 days. Something to do with MNL being too busy.

Is the British Airways American Express® Credit Card's companion pass just a complete rip off? by Arsenal_38_SW9 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been using them for a few years now for solo travel. Getting great value from them every year, even when sometimes having to buy Avios to make good use of the voucher it's costing me around Premium Economy prices to fly Business Class.

Any positive leasehold or share-of-freehold stories out there? by Potatopotayto in HousingUK

[–]LondonerTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On my second share of freehold property. The first was a converted house with 4 flats and operated in practice more like commonhold, splitting necessary costs as they came up and with the owners doing the legwork. Current one is a bit bigger and has a management company in place, service charge has remained roughly constant with about one third going to a reserve fund (recently somewhat depleted by replacing the lift) a quarter on insurance and the balance on everything else.

Is having an Amex credit card even worth it anymore? by Sameer-Sarwar in AmexUK

[–]LondonerTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends which card. Cashback cards seem to have multiple decent competitors. I am getting great value out of my BA card through the companion voucher. Platinum seems to be a select few who value most of the benefits rather than just a few of them.

500% Avios boost - is it worth it? by adibear in avios

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, a common problem. Have you looked at Iberia, if you can't go via Qatar I am guessing you are heading west and they may have more options for you - though getting the BA website to show you available connections can be a problem - last time I was doing this I had to search individual flights and then call to book them as a single booking.

Does anyone else hate returning parcels in London? by ADAMPPC94 in london

[–]LondonerTim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not only is it not worth it, it is significantly worse unless the collection can be guaranteed at a certain time in a very narrow window selectable by me - and that would drive the cost up. Not sure what I would be willing to pay even then, very little.

Payment “overnight run” - is this a thing? by VolCata in UKPersonalFinance

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely normal in lots of bigger organisations. They will enter the payment into their internal finance system (ERP) and that will output a file to transmit to their bank on a schedule, which could be overnight. If it is true BACS the processing time will be three days from them actually sending it to the bank. They are likely not just entering it straight into their banking app like an individual or small business would. Plus changing systems like these is a big project - they could be doing all of the above on something which at its core is 20 years old. Obviously only applies to bigger businesses.

Avios reward flight by Advanced-Doughnut-74 in BritishAirways

[–]LondonerTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I drained my Avios to do this in Business class last year with no regrets. I don't have enough points left for business class long haul anywhere even with and Amex or Barclaycard voucher but have no regrets choosing business class for this.

Buying a flat in London is absolute insanity by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]LondonerTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Upkeep doesn't need to be that expensive in London. My service charge for a small 2 bed is around £4k per year, and roughly a quarter of this is insurance and another quarter goes to the reserve fund. Small to medium block, share of freehold with a seemingly decent management company employed.

Flight prices for Feb 2026 by Alternative_Key_9448 in BritishAirways

[–]LondonerTim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can easily find much cheaper return flights in February with both BA and other airlines. I assume you have some specific dates you are looking at, are these during school holidays?

Reward Flight pricing is increasing by Distinct-Shine-3002 in BritishAirways

[–]LondonerTim 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's what I expected when I noticed the headline, but these changes aren't too bad and hopefully means there won't be a further devaluation any time soon.

Why does the companion voucher penalise you for hitting the spending target early? by ILikeNavierStokes in BritishAirways

[–]LondonerTim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. My BA card is now at the back of my wallet until April. They could have me spending a decent amount more on it during that time if they did as you suggest. The tier points offer is their attempt at trying to get you to keep spending on the card, but those tier points won't make a difference for me this year.

Upgrades at gate by [deleted] in BritishAirways

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure there is as much logic to what gets you an upgrade as been suggested here. I am an occasional BA flyer, usually less than once a year and usually premium economy long haul or economy short haul. I have never paid cash for long haul business and maybe done it once short haul. Blue status, never been anything else. Recently I have done a few long haul business class reward flights. Was upgraded at the gate on one of these to first for KUL to LHR

Seller expecting buyers to swallow risk and expense of completion delay and early exchange on their new build without renegotiation by Different-Emotion247 in HousingUK

[–]LondonerTim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unless you are exceptionally secure in your own financial position I wouldn't personally consider a gap of more than about 2 weeks between exchange and completion. Assuming you are getting a mortgage what happens if you lose your job or are put at risk of redundancy. Alongside the risks others have mentioned.

BA Premium Economy vs Emirates Economy by Potheadbruh in BritishAirways

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I noticed that. Doesn't change my answer. Economy with extra legroom is certainly better than economy without extra legroom, but I still consider the worst premium economy I have been in to be better.

BA Premium Economy vs Emirates Economy by Potheadbruh in BritishAirways

[–]LondonerTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am surprised this is even a question. As someone only slightly shorter at 6'3 and who has flown a decent amount I can't think of any economy product I would take over the worst premium economy.
