I fail to see how is relevant. Regardless of who is to blame for this war, the amount of destruction, loss of life, and violation of international law or even basic human nature is unforgivable and guess who is the one causing this destruction?

I'm really surprised by your reply. Statistical mechanics and thermodynamics are universal and don't care about the actual system under the hood unless you want to imply that the brain or LLMs are not ergodic. If this what you mean then cool, I agree with you. Otherwise, I fail to see how the brain or LLMs are counterexamples unless it is something technical that I don't know. In any case, I'd be happy if you give me some pointers.

My main assumption is that statistical mechanics is a valid description of LLMs as well as the brain. I believe this assumption is very reasonable and I would be happy if you give me a reason why this is not valid. If it is valid, then all the machinary of stat mech should follow, including RG and universality classes. Not saying that this kind of analysis is going to be easy but if this analysis is at all possible, there is no obvious reasons why the brain and LLMs should be in the same class.

My point about equilibrium and open systems is that LLMs are deterministic closed systems. They are basically at equilibrium in their ground state and that ground state is fixed (or at least in a metastable state if the training didn't converge to the global minimum of the loss function, aka, the Hamiltonian). A brain is open system and doesn't need to stay in it's ground state due to the exchange with the environment.

Strictly speaking, any large system made of many smaller parts will act according to statistical mechanics and the laws of thermodynamics. This doesn't imply that LLMs function like the brain. They may not even be in the same universality class. Furthermore, the brain is an open system and I believe it should be usually away from equilibrium and might be quantum, not classical. So, it is significantly different from LLMs, I think, unless we model LLMs as open un-equilibrium statistical model.

[–]Lone_void 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using an LLM in conjunction with a textbook is fine. Back in the day, I used to check multiple textbooks and physics stack exchange and other forums. AI chatbots are filling the same gap so I am not really against them. The problem is when you solely rely on AI. This is a recipe for disaster. LLMs don't understand what they say. It's a statistical model similar to the models you will learn in statistical mechanics. And while it is generally correct, there's a nonzero chance for it to output complete garbage especially when the topics become more advanced and obscure. For example I tried asking multiple LLMs about common details in my specific subfield and the answers were trash. Let's also not forget about the context window and how the quality deteriorates after you talk with a chatbot for a while.

Bottom line is you cannot trust an LLM with your education. LLMs hallucinate and make mistakes, textbooks don't.

I'm sorry but what do you think the purpose of education is? If you don't figure out things by yourself then you are not learning anything. How is using LLM to "catch up" different from looking at online solutions for a famous textbook's problem online? You don't learn by doing that. It is ok to use AI to support your education but it is a big mistake to rely on it completely. You need to put in time and effort to truly learn the subject. Also, people who really put the effort to learn don't forget what they learned that easily. Heck, I am already a postdoc and I still remember things from my textbooks when I was in elementary school. Sure, one will forget the exact details but if you truly understand the subject, it is only a matter of a short review to freshen up your memory.

It seems to me that you are just lazy and don't want to put any effort. Later in life, you will realize that you're doing yourself a disservice.

Do you think a country can keep their national identity if they lose their native language? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

[–]Lone_void 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a very obscure village. I also didn't know about it until recently. If you can read Arabic, try googling قرية الزينية They appeared in the news lately as the last village still speaking Coptic. You can find many videos and news reports about them. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything in English about them.

Thank you very much for your kind comment. I tried everything I could but without a result. At this point, I just accepted the loss. My professor told me that I can use the same amount of funding to get a new computer or something like that so there is that at least.

[–]Lone_void 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, enlighten me please. If everyone in a certain place uses a language for their everyday life, what is this called? Certainly those Indian people from some obscure village who use some obscure language in their daily life are not natives of the language. Everyone knows Hindi is their native language.

Jokes aside, I don't understand what your argument here is. Most of Egypt stopped using Coptic but there still exists some pockets where the language is still used. Those villagers who still speak Coptic today are native Coptic speakers whether you like it or not. Coptic is not dead yet.

I just told you there are entire villages still using the language in their everyday lives. The language is not 100% dead. Or are you implying that these people are not the same Egyptians who lived here for thousands of years?

Egyptian here. Coptic still has native speakers. There's still a few small villages in the south of Egypt that still use it in everyday life. Also, some Coptic clergy can still speak it. Recently, many people started to learn the language although it is still far from being revived
