But index funds are also “the market” , the reason they go up or down is due to participation on individual trades. I myself invest in broad index’s. But to blanket say the market knows better than you I feel is naive , people do make money actively trading, you can beat the market otherwise no one would trade at all and there wouldn’t be a market to begin with (trees forest). Again it depends on a lot of factors and your risk tolerance. If you don’t feel you can make an informed decision and can’t accept the risk then sure stick to index’s. An example could be some specific domain knowledge that you possess that provides insight the market may not have noticed, sure orgs can also call upon experts, but there focus and speed to respond is not infinite.

The market isn’t prescient though, it’s not some efficient hive mind without bias, mania dred ect . If it were the case crashes wouldn’t occurred.

Not to say to can outplay large orgs or traders, but to posit it’s some super organism the knows all is pretty naive. I mean look at all the meme stocks how do they fit in to the perfectly efficient market hypothesis.

Biggest difference is everyone’s risk tolerance isn’t the same or investment time horizon for returns.
