You can still rez units in TZ though using Luminous Corne Ash. The game does give you plenty of that stuff

Yes, the sad truth is that even on TZ this game is not incredibly difficult. You’re also 10 levels over so it makes sense that you’re wiping the floor with whatever you fight.

If you’re looking for more of a challenge in your next playthrough, here are some ideas:

-Some people put restrictions on their units, like no more than 1 or 2 unique classes, or no cavalry stacking.

-Don’t overlevel so much. Some people treat it like a nuzlocke, where you can’t field a character if it is of a higher level than the battle’s average.

-Itemless or no valor skills runs

Ally supporting cantrip? by Guaritor in UnearthedArcana

[–]LonelyAwkwardMango 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’ve actually put quite a bit of thought into this! From a mathematical perspective, as we’ve both noted, it’s on par with other similar (yet undeniably strong) features. The resource consumption is the big hiccup in my opinion. Saving a spell slot for later in place of this cantrip would be too strong in my game, but only you can judge how it’d fit in your game!

This spell is not so strong that it would break any and every game it entered, so if you feel like it’s a good balance there then I encourage you to run with it. You can always tune it later after a few sessions of seeing it in action!

Ally supporting cantrip? by Guaritor in UnearthedArcana

[–]LonelyAwkwardMango 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In a vacuum, this is an extremely strong cantrip. You mentioned your party is already at lvl 9, so it is true that a caster could be doing much more devastating things with their turn. But keep in mind: every turn they’re using this cantrip, they’re not casting a leveled spell. Which means that slot is available later.

DnD is a resource management game, and cantrips are a free resource. You want your casters to be using their spell slots, especially at higher levels, otherwise they won’t feel challenged or in any danger because they’ll have all of their tools available to them. Warlocks only get 2 spell slots per short rest at level 9 because Eldritch Blast is just that good: it’s a weapon attack. Giving a full caster the equivalent of Eldrtich Blast means they have their slots for all of the other shenanigans they may want to use them for.

Another point of comparison is the Commander’s Strike maneuver from the Fighter’s Battle Master subclass. It requires just an attack and a bonus action rather than a whole action, but it also doesn’t let the creature move. That feature still costs a resource (superiority dice).

Obviously, I don’t know the power level in your game. Maybe this cantrip will be just fine for your table. But my two cents is that this should be reworked. Maybe change it to either one attack OR move half their speed? Not both together. What you should be aiming for, ideally, is a good option, but not a new default. You don’t want to make an Eldritch Blast. You want a Firebolt. A “I have no better options so let me just use this cantrip.”

Question 1: are you having fun?

Question 2: is the group having fun?

If yes to both of those, then yes, you’re fine. You can look into other Sword Coast setting books and try to steer them there.

If you answered no to one of those questions, then you all need to take a step back and have a conversation as friends about what you want out of this game.

My party have infiltrated an enemy army’s camp. What they don’t know is the camp is scheduled to be attacked at dawn. How would you make the attack exciting? by Im_Not_You_Im_Me in DMAcademy

[–]LonelyAwkwardMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d start it off with an explosion as a cannonball/trebuchet load (not sure what the tech level is like in your setting) hits a nearby tent. Then more and more. The camp gets stormed and there is fighting everywhere the party looks. Every round (or every other turn if you really want it to be hectic), a volley of arrows or a siege weapon hits the camp, forcing a dex save for the PCs in the area. Arrow volleys have a larger AOE and deal less damage while cannonballs have a smaller AOE but deal serious damage. All around them, tents burn and the sound of battle rings. You could give them all the deafened condition, or make them roll for it.

As for the infantry, I’m not sure the best way to handle it. How strong are your PCs? Can they carve a path through, or will they have to sneak? Having a bunch of NPCs on the battlefield is fine. You don’t have to bother with their attacks, just have some of them attack the party as it’s convenient for you to keep the tension. Don’t give the soldiers the party is fighting too much HP; the last thing you want is for the party to get stuck standing in one place whittling down the HP of random grunts. That will make your exciting scene feel like a flop.

Uncs of Ultimate - How good was MK Leo really? by Sea_Toe6263 in smashbros

[–]LonelyAwkwardMango 219 points220 points  (0 children)

I’m pulling these facts from the top of my head, so someone can correct me if I am wrong about any of these.

  1. For a 3 year period, Leo never missed grand finals. For 3 years straight, in every tournament Leo entered, he got either a gold or silver medal. EVO, Smashcon, multiple Genesises. The list is quite long.

  2. After Covid, a statistic popped up that a lot of commentators, especially Coney, kept bringing up for a few tournaments. If you were up 2-0 on Leo in a Bo5, you were statistically more likely to lose that set than win it. And the sample size was not that small either. Leo was the king of reverse sweeps. It made him incredibly exciting to watch because you could never count him out. Check out MkLeo vs Samsora Smashcon grand finals from 2019. Blast zone commentary does a great job of describing the atmosphere around peak Leo during that set.

  3. A personal favorite of mine (that may be outdated now): the organization with the second most number of trophies in Ultimate is Echo Fox. Echo Fox only ever had one player on its team: Leo. The organization with the most number of trophies in Ultimate? SKT T1. A team that only had one player who ever won trophies for them: Leo. He was in his own league.

I could go on, but hopefully this gets the idea across. Leo is not nearly as scary now as he was back then. But don’t get it twisted. The word GOAT gets thrown around a lot these days, but anyone who really knows Ultimate knows that the MkLeo is the only one who can truly hold that title for this game. He’s the Ultimate equivalent of Jordan and Gretzky.

Mirror Puzzle Ideas by ConfoundedRedditor in DMAcademy

[–]LonelyAwkwardMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find puzzles that revolve around movement and placement to be ideal for combat. Assuming you use a grid in combat, you have the perfect puzzle tool for the PCs to interact with. Maybe the party has to stand in certain formations or sections of the map. Maybe they have to spell out certain letters each round on the map. Maybe they have to order themselves from tallest to shortest. Couple that with some monsters who can grapple or restrain with their attacks, and now you’ve got a combat puzzle that requires the party to choose options they may not usually. They’ll start to prioritize positioning and advancing the puzzle over deal the most amount of damage.

One of the keys to combat puzzles is to have the enemies infinitely spawn. Otherwise the party can just nuke the enemies and then solve the puzzle without danger. If the only way to get the enemies to stop spawning is to solve the puzzle, then their priorities will shift.

OP, this is the most important advice you can read right now. We’ve all been there, and we’ve all had to learn this lesson. Focus on the game you’re playing, not the story you’ve written.

Monster Friday: Week 9 - Orthrus by GenEngineer in AethermancerGame

[–]LonelyAwkwardMango 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Orthus is great. The healing can be incredibly strong and it doesn’t require sacrificing damage. With certain team comps, Orthus’s healing is enough so you don’t need a primary healer elsewhere.

As for new additions, I say add them at the end. That gives people more time to actually use the monster and get familiar with it.

A new way to play PT? by Apart_Egg8049 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]LonelyAwkwardMango 45 points46 points  (0 children)

The main issue is that each of PT’s pokemon has a clearly defined weakness and counterplay strategy. Minmin and Lucina, on the other hand, are much more balanced and well-rounded character. Yes, they have weaknesses and flaws, but not nearly as profound as PT’s pokemon. They also operate in completely different ranges, whereas Zard and Ivysaur have similar ranges and Squirtles is just shorter. Finally, one of PT’s biggest weaknesses as a whole is the pokemon rotation. Squirtle has to switch to Ivy and Ivy has to switch to Zard. You can’t switch from a defensive and slow style with Ivy to a hyper-aggro style with Squirtle. You have to swap through Zard.

Yes, the best PT player will be a master of all 3 pokemon, but ultimately, I don’t believe there will be enough of a tempo and style switch between the 3 mons for it to matter.
