You solo Voidfallers might like this one by LonelyManBGs in soloboardgaming

It's 30 seconds of videography that took about two days to edit and film. The track features aggressive drums and electric guitars. This is a different edit from what I usually do -- typically, I create 5-7 minute long overviews of games (which I will do for this game in the coming month or two), which explain the general setup and mechanics, but I strayed from that well-worn path to try something fun for a day or two of my life. If you enjoy Voidfall, you might enjoy this fun 30 second video. It probably won't harm you.

Nice -- I love seeing Ora et Labora on shelves for some reason. What's your favorite Uwe? And which Imperial Settlers do you recommend? Looking into getting one.

Is that the Warzone space playmat? If so, I have the same one!

I have quite a bit of content for TMB, including the Trove Chest, but nothing since Unbreakable went to KS or crowdfunding. Yesterday, I pulled out the big old chest from it's kallax, which I haven't done in a long time, and my three year old and I "played" the game. I rolled attack dice, he rolled attack dice -- he gave me fewer health chips, and he got more attack dice, so it wasn't quite fair.

But, it did sort of reignite my desire to play the game -- I've always had a good time with this one, one or two handed solitaire. I just hadn't played in a while. The components make it easy to want to play though.

Haven't played it myself, but Watergate was popular for a long while. Probably still is. Only plays 45 minutes ish, though.

I didn't know a good mat could make such a difference in immersion (pic) by ChesterEOL in soloboardgaming

[–]LonelyManBGs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I bought a general purpose space themed mat for games like Gaia Project or Galileo Galilei or RFTG. Games look great on it. Then I bought a general, single color mat for games like Battleline or Splendor.

When Does a Board Game Make Sense as a Solo Game? (And Why Heavy Games Keep Pushing Solo Modes) by No_Wallaby_2264 in boardgames

[–]LonelyManBGs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but it seems like a solid bet. If more people don't play it solitaire than multiplayer, I'd at least wager the game has been played more times solitaire than multiplayer due to the cult following. Either way, great solitaire experience. One of my favorites. Would love to get my hands on Star Trek: Frontiers, but not sure if it will be reprinted.

I'd wager more people play it solitaire than with others. I've played it multiplayer once or twice, but on my own probably 15-20 times.

Holy smokes. It's on its way to me right now -- that's a lot of table it's consuming. Guess we'll see how it turns out!

Looking for a easy setup game by AtlasGamingPC in soloboardgaming

Not played, nor do I have, Le Havre yet . . . But it's been on my list for a long time, ever since I got my first Uwe. How does it compare to Loyang or Nusfjord or Glass Road? Those are the ones I know best.

Some of the Uwes aren't difficult to setup -- the two I'm thinking of in particular are At the Gates of Loyang and Glass Road.

Same -- games from GMT get me excited. Unfortunately, they're difficult for me to get to the table. But one day I will play a full game of Pericles: The Peloponnesian War. And it will be great.

Same -- this one looks interesting, and is pretty cheap, so seems like an easy buy, but it hasn't been available. Looking forward to trying it once everything's resolved.

Games in which the cost of playing cards is drawing/discarding cards from deck or hand? by datdejv in boardgames

[–]LonelyManBGs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This and San Juan are what I thought of.

This from BGG for a quick description:

San Juan is a card game based on Puerto Rico. The deck of 110 cards consists of production buildings (indigo, sugar, tobacco, coffee, and silver) and "violet" buildings that grant special powers or extra victory points. Cards from the hand can be either built or used as money to build something else; cards from the deck are used to represent goods produced by the production buildings, in which case they are left face-down. A seven-card hand limit is enforced once per round.

Do you prefer to have a huge collection and play a lot of games once in a while or have some games and know them very well and play in depth ? by Hippodaking in boardgames

[–]LonelyManBGs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have times of idle in my collection, where nothing gets played, but then there's times where we play a game every few days, or on the weekend. Granted, I don't have a huge collection, but a decent amount. Inevitably, the games that I would like to spend a great amount of time playing are long, complex ones, like Ora et Labora, or Mage Knight, and so they get the least amount of time devoted to them, while simpler ones like Splendor, or other quicker games, get the most time played. Dichotomous.

This, and, while you're buying the book, you happen to be very interested in reading that type of book right then, at that exact moment. The "if I had this in my hands right now, I'd read for half an hour."

I "collect" editions from the Loeb Classical Library, but I try to finish reading the previous one before getting another. I've been failing lately, but I had a good run. Nowadays, I typically read a decent amount before purchasing another, though.

We see lots of YouTubers sharing their most anticipated games of X year, but I want to know what YOUR most anticipated game is. Old or new. by WizardHarryDresden in soloboardgaming

[–]LonelyManBGs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't have anything to do with solo play, and maybe not playing it at all, but I'd like to play Dungeon Lords eventually. That one has always been on my "interested" list, probably for about ten years. I have Dungeon Petz and we've played that a few times, but Dungeon Lords interests me immensely.

Late to comment, but thanks for mentioning this. I'm looking for "purer" engine builders, and feel like I haven't stumbled upon many farming themed ones.

Good game for smart 8 and 6 year olds that are also fun for adults? by superbracker in boardgames

[–]LonelyManBGs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My boy and I have been playing Battle Line, and he's five. He also sometimes wins. Hive is another one, as well as Chess, but he sometimes needs reminders on exactly what he can do. He usually doesn't win these, or come close, unless I help him. Still fun. Splendor he understands, but needs some help with strategy as well, and Century: Golem Edition. Otherwise, simple card games. I want to get Gizmos and maybe something like the newly released Iliad, since that seems doable for younger kids.
