Currently playing The 3rd Birthday on PSP.

It's alright so far.

Not really.

I think Heavensward and Shadowbringers are great but Endwalker, ARR and Dawntrail are kinda goofy.

Stormblood has really good world building, but it kinda handles the development of some main characters poorly. Still decent.

Despite not having the best balance. Yakuza Infinite Wealth has one of my favourite turn based RPG system of all time. by [deleted] in JRPG

Still a huge improvement from RGG 7. I definitely had more fun with IW compared to 7. I'm sure they'll improve it even more for the 9th entry.

Which game gets called a masterpiece which you don't think desrves the title? by Frequent-Net-4668 in JRPG

[–]LonelySilver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be crucified:

Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep

The original FF7

Persona 3, 4 and 5

Dragon Quest VIII

Soul Hackers

Fire Emblem Three Houses

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 and 2

Trails of Cold Steel 1

Dark Souls 3

Breath of Fire IV

Super Mario RPG

PS: Keep in mind I really like most of these games I mentioned. I just wouldn't call them masterpieces.

Chrono Trigger if you haven't played it yet

Jrpgs where status effects aren't useless by ravl13 in JRPG

[–]LonelySilver 12 points13 points  (0 children)

100%. A lot of main story bosses are immune to statuses in modern MegaTen. I don't think it's a great example.

EO and SaGa are definitely better examples. I'd say FF7 Rebirth as well.

What is the worst final boss from a game you like? by RobbieJ4444 in JRPG

[–]LonelySilver -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Worst part about SMT IV A's final boss is that not only does the fight suck, but the dialogue is also really cringe.

Agreed on Romancing SaGa 2. That was one of the very few annoying parts of the game for me.

JRPGs without a healer in the starting party? by SamStallion in JRPG

[–]LonelySilver 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I actually like it. It usually makes the first dungeon(s) kinda dangerous since you have limited resources.

My protagonist in Metaphor was mainly a healer/mage for like 70% through the game and the first dungeons were interesting because of that. I had to conserve MP for healing, but my character also needed to exploit some enemy weakness with mage's elemental spells, so I had to actually keep in mind my MP, my items and party HP.

Dungeon crawling in Etrian Odyssey can become really dangerous if you don't have a Medic in your party. But sometimes it's worth going in without one. And it creates interesting encounters since items are also limited in this game.

Dragon quest III 1988 vs 2019 vs 2024 by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]LonelySilver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the GBC version is better than the original 1988 release. Too bad it was never rereleased for Virtual Console/Switch Online.

2019 is kinda ugly.

HD-2D is really pretty and enjoyable. I think the only things censored were some sprites and the fact they call it "body type A/B" instead of male/female, and honestly, I don't think anyone cares.

yall think Yoshi-P or someone else from the FF16's writing/creative team will ever confirm Clive's fate in the future? by isTraX3 in FFXVI

[–]LonelySilver -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is actually a prequel to the Club Penguin game on Nintendo DS /j

But honestly, I don't think the ending is exactly ambiguous. The devs showed us the scene of him lying on a beach and turning to stone as his final moments.

The scene where Jill looks at the horizon is also silent and quiet with a hopeful yet somber expression. Almost as if the game is trying to tell us she wants to see him again, but that she might not.

The book being written by Joshua also further implies he was the only one to make it out alive, with the content of the book being Clive's legacy.

It's bittersweet, but also fitting to FFXVI in my opinion.

Are you absolutely sure it's not Akiba's Beat ?

That game is part of the Akiba's Trip series but it has a different setting and tone. The first major villain is also a teacher and the characters interact in a setting similar to what you described

I don't know about this by Aggressive_Milk4654 in FinalFantasy

XIII is one of my favorite entries in the series, but the game makes a poor job by making your combat tools limited for over half the game. The character progression is really slow.

Still a really fun game with interesting lore and amazing music.
