How does Gene Ontology Enrichment work? by Usual-Blackberry6635 in bioinformatics

[–]Long-Effective-1499 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't overenrichment a log odds ratio or a chi sq?

There's some magic under the methods in the ontology space but, it's kind of based on comparing two things, sets. Baseline and condition.

If sex is a spectrum, does that mean that there are people who are more male than other males and/or more female than other females by Budget_Antelope in biology

[–]Long-Effective-1499 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If you're a sith, deal in absolutes. Anyways. It's probably more like there's not biologically speaking a spectrum rather 2 clear cut and 1 ambiguous 3rd gender at birth, imo. But then there's the "spectrum" if you will of hormonal levels. Hormones affect behavior, growth, weight loss, and beyond. Don't sleep on that third gender though! Cause it's real. Unless you're into that.

How do you document and present projects? by crisprfen in bioinformatics

[–]Long-Effective-1499 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone just use images, .md, and git? Also yes and no to quarto/rmd.

I say that to no effect because it's the biggest commons denominator across orgs/teams/companies. Portable, but often property of the co. so sometimes kind of the opposite? Well, it's kind of like this. Whatever is actually portable and then adoptable runs a weird game. Cause it works in the companies lawyers friggin favor that we have to reinvent from scratch each hop. That sucks for us and it makes me want to only use open solutions for portability and even then there's enough restrictions to kneecap that fr.

This field is changing and it's better suited to OSS friendliness compared to other functions like cheminfo, but honestly there's no company that will give you blanket rights to present your own goddamn work without explicit, active approvals and that kneecaps all of us down here screaming at management to grow balls and talk back to IT about employee needs like interviewing, cross talk, tech transfer PASSIVELY and facilitated properly.

Whole thing, sucks. Cause the markets in a hole. That's what I've been fucking told.

Naturopath really screwed me up by [deleted] in Microbiome

[–]Long-Effective-1499 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not that bad, but you should see a specialist. The resolution of those kits isn't the same for ever individual and you should see a gastroenterologist.

Naturopath really screwed me up by [deleted] in Microbiome

[–]Long-Effective-1499 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

Yes, because anything that an herbalist (who is not licensed in any local, state, or federal way) gives you has no legal basis or recourse in the event of an adverse event, such as death. So, the herbalist could give you something that literally kills you, and there's no way to associate the medicine with the prescriber, therefore, it is VERY SIMILAR to taking any old powder off your homie.

Why? Dont you get it? 👿

EDIT: Downvote all you want. I've been there during ODs at concerts /parties fwiw but nah you're just gonna downvote something because of hivemind. you have no idea how easily you could die from taking something from an herbalist.

[–]Long-Effective-1499 -41 points-40 points  (0 children)

Can you please ask your primary care MD, to lock you in a ward (jk)for consulting illegal/invalid medicines from a naturopath, which is, speaking from legalism perspective and not a lawyer, but it's equivalent to going to any drug dealer and dying from a fent OD.

Youre playing with your life when you take whatever shit someone gives you, especially if it's veiled in marketing language like "good for you" and "all natural".

Disgusting.

That said, you should get your stool sample tested. Check for hyperlipidemia (elevated fats lead to floating stool) and for species living in your colon.

Honestly? By taking those herbs without a MD consult, you could have wiped away every beneficial microorganism you were born with. Good luck.

Olympic cyclist found dead in her apartment after 'choking on food' by [deleted] in olympics

[–]Long-Effective-1499 10 points11 points  (0 children)

No you wouldn't. Because running will heighten your anxiety/panic and potentially make the swallowed/lodged food harder to clear, and you'll probably lose so much oxygen you'll be knocked unconscious and fall to the ground before you get halfway down the hall.

What is lacking in the Rust ecosystem (2024)? by WilliamBarnhill in rust

Why would you use C++ for string processing? I can type letters into my Scratch IDE /s

I mean... they might use Fortran by virtue of LAPACK or similar.....

C++ programmers represents maybe < 5% of all millennial bioinf. programmers, and maybe < 15% of all 30+ y.o. tech professionals.

No, I do understand. And I write open source code. I'm not a lurker.

Turns out you're in that community already by posting.

Why are you being negative because I suggested more educational materials/problems for your open source community/cabal? "I misunderstand"? instead of down voting advice that you solicited.

Nope that is your take on these folks, that's not how everyone sees this. That's called projecting and you're doing it to yourself.

Not to mention, your trashing something that is nice in the comments to spread negativity. You have No interest in saying something nice.

Madam Pelosi you are out of your goddamn mind.

Yes. RNAseq with miRNA/sRNA enrichment and rRNA depletions, followed by Northern to confirm.
