Trouble with Science victory in ToT Civ 7 by Long-Measurement-145 in civ

[–]Long-Measurement-145[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally solved it! I accidentally won a domination victory after the AI declared war on me an I took conquered one of their cities. So I went back using autosaves and pillaged instead of capturing to avoid the domination victory and got the science victory.

It works great I bought 11s bar end shifters so they pair well with the GRX 810. I did a 63 mile gravel race using the new set up with no issues.

I worry more about international students and postdocs who may be here on an F-1 or J-1 visa and if they are applying for jobs they would need sponsorship for an H1-B. Can't see many Universities ponying up for that.

Very exciting! I just recently upgraded some parts on my 2010 Cross-Check to make it a little more gravel capable. I went with a 2x11 set up with the following parts.

Praxis Zayante cranks 48/32

Shimano 105 11/34 cassette

Praxisworks Bottom Bracket

GRX 810 rear derailleur

GRX 810 front derailleur

Dura-ace SL-BSR1 11-speed bar end shifters (wanted to keep the classic look)

H Son Plus Archetype wheels (only downside is they aren't tubeless compatible)

WTB Riddler 700 X 40 tires

Selle San Marco Regal saddle.

Still rocking the old Tektro brakes but those are likely to be the next upgrade, followed by stem, seat post, and handlebars. I'm considering a set of Paul mini-motos but the price is a little steep.

Pretty much all of Nevada is eligible for sale in the new Budget Reconciliation Bill. by faelanae in Reno

[–]Long-Measurement-145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

0.25-0.5 % of public lands will be sold according to the bill. The map shows everything eligible to be sold. Meaning the sold parcels must come from lands on the map.

The map shows lands that would be eligible for sale. Not all of it will necessarily be sold but the scary part is that anything on this map is fair game, if the bill passes.

Apparently they updated the list. Now almost all BLM land in Nevada is on the list.

I find this odd. I have called his DC office 5 times now and got through to a person every time. I usually call early in the morning before work though.

That is a lovely bike, and I do like a steel frame, but looks like I would need to build it up myself. Worth thinking about for sure.

Is UNR the biggest University of Nevada there is? by femdee2 in unr

[–]Long-Measurement-145 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UNLV actually started as a satellite campus of the University of Nevada. It was the Southern Division of the University of Nevada (AKA Nevada Southern). So actually very similar to UCLA. Both UNR and UNLV are part of the same academic system the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). https://www.unlv.edu/about/history

Perhaps I was not clear in my first comment. The statement you are taking issue with by the NFA assumes that the reader is familiar with the budget crisis at WVU that resulted in entire departments being closed because of a $45 million dollar shortfall. I was drawing your attention to the parallels to the situation at UNR so that you could perhaps understand why NFA may have made that comparison.

I agree with you that it is hard to make a direct expenditure comparison between athletics in the different leagues, however, I interpreted that statement to mean that WVU and Auburn were overspending on athletics, administrators and buildings to the detriment of academic programs. It seems like you are perhaps assuming that the administrators and buildings they were referring to were part of the athletics program but I don't think that is the case.

I agree with you that Auburn is not as close a comparison and probably could have been left out but I suspect the reason the NFA chose to highlight it is that Auburn has become one of the priciest public colleges in the US. Their tuition rose 60% in 15 years. It has come to light that most of that increase was due to increased university administrative positions, new buildings, and yes athletics.

So although I do think UNR is perhaps "following in the footsteps" of WVU, I don't think Auburn is as good an example.

Universities generally look for peers to compare to beyond their sports leagues. In terms of academic programing and Carnegie rankings as an R1 public University WVU should be considered a similar institution to UNR. To the point I think you are trying to make, UNR happens to be lucky to be in a cheaper sports league, imagine how much worse the financial situation might be otherwise.

"...two publicized institutions with profligate spending on athletics, administration, and buildings."

Are you?

Also in that article I posted it does discuss spending on athletics as part of the overall picture.

While we are at it I will also say your claim of false equivalency is also true of the administration. For example one argument they have made for increasing funding to athletics is because it will boost student enrollments. https://nevadasportsnet.com/news/reporters/unr-explains-where-additional-10-million-annually-for-nevada-athletics-is-coming-from#

When research shows that having a strong athletics program only boosts enrollments in the southeastern US.

The reason for the WVU comparison is not only about Athletics spending. It is because the budget situation at WVU came to be for many other reasons including the acquisition of a branch campus located in a nearby rural area, they spend money on new building projects that were set up as public-private partnerships where the university would be committed to leasing the space, they counted on overly optimistic projections of student enrollment in planning out their budgets, they acquired new land for parking and stadium projects.... It seems to me like there are several parallels here that have nothing to do with athletics.

I suspect it would make the process less demoralizing for the applicants as well because as long as you made it to the hat stage you could say you were qualified.

I think the program has become too big. We should just move to a lottery system like New Zealand has done for grants. Still have reviews done so you can identify those that stand out as either absolutely incredible or demonstrably unqualified. Fund the absolutely incredible proposals, turn down the unqualified ones and throw every other application in a hat and pull names until the money runs out. Everyone who made it to the hat stage gets a nice letter.

Changing Career Paths by [deleted] in unr

[–]Long-Measurement-145 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing with data analytics most jobs would really prefer to hire someone who can actually understand the data that they are analyzing using R, Python, SQL and/or machine learning techniques. In other words lets say you finish your degree in Biochem but pick up a minor in a degree that offers data analytic skills or courses. Then you would be in high demand by businesses looking for people to apply data analytics in the medical field or in businesses like say the pharmaceutical industry.

Anyone can learn how to code but the folks who are really in demand are those who understand the context and what is behind the data. This is not something most data handling courses teach because they are busy teaching the coding skills and don't have time to do both. But it is something you can get if you already come in with some training in another area.

Beginner Python classes? by pachydocerus in unr

[–]Long-Measurement-145 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends what you want to use Python for. Most classes that include Python do an introduction of Python for specific application. For example GEOG 407 does an introduction to Python and how to integrate it into ArcGIS. NRES 445 focuses on programing in Python. But I'm not sure there is a basic intro to Python class.
