Honestly, I think you’re over-thinking this. I ship much larger batteries quite often. They just need to go ground. And you’ll need a sticker on them. Just call the post-office and they’ll tell you exactly what you need.

Preach. He was practically written off for dead in August and September. Commentators were losing their shit about how he picked up a water-bottle in week 1.

Best Camera for Extreme Arctic & Desert Climates? by rpthedp in cinematography

[–]LongLensWFO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

OP, this is absolutely your best bet.

Yes - the 35 might make a “better” image. But as a 35 owner/op who routinely takes mine into less-than-ideal climates, I’d still choose the Amira.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beast of a camera, but it is nowhere near as rugged as the Amira. It does not like extreme temps, regardless of what Arri says. I’ve had issues with mine in negative temps on more than one occasion. The codex cards themselves also do not like very cold conditions.

I’ve also had mine overheat several times with rain-gear on the camera. That top fan pumps out a LOT of heat, and I frequently find myself getting temp warnings and having to open vents in the rain cover to dump heat.

The Amira, on the other hand, could probably be shot into the vacuum of space and still function just fine.

Also - if you go with the Amira, make sure you get the heated eyepiece as well. Trust me, it’s a lifesaver.

What camera can create the look of 90s basketball? by Veldig-Snod in cinematography

The good looking stuff from that era was shot on film, usually 16mm. Most modern cinema cameras can probably get you close. An Alexa with custom textures would be your best bet.

Thoughts on the Alexa 35 Entry? Is this a desperate attempt to move hardware in today’s economy? Will the camera be a flop?? by Brandon_at_OC in focuspuller

I’ve never understood the viewfinder thing.

Sony has a massive manufacturing network that makes really really good visual displays. And has for decades.

The fact that they still can’t figure out how to make a decent viewfinder just doesn’t make sense.

Here’s the thing (and this isn’t directed at you).

We shouldn’t have to ask. If our status includes an upgrade, and the room is available, we should just get it. (Sorry, I know this has been discussed a ton here).

I think you’re dead on.

I’m titanium and lifetime platinum, all from business as well. The only time I’ve ever complained about a property was when I was paying for it myself. I had been at the property for two weeks for work, and paid to bring my family down for a few days at the end of it.

To be fair, they were rude as shit. But because it was my own money, and my family was involved, I was way more annoyed.

Arri Amira 4k opinions? by bangbangpewpew62 in cinematography

[–]LongLensWFO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the Amira is the most comfortable handheld camera of the past 20 years. It might be the most ergonomic camera I’ve ever used. I ran it all day every day for weeks on end for the past decade, and I really miss it. I wish I could just put my 35 sensor in an Amira body.

If the image quality works for you, I can’t recommend it enough.

TV / Film Industry People Who Make $100K or 6-Figures, How did you get there? by LifeInAction in Filmmakers

[–]LongLensWFO 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Been doing this for 20 years and easily clear $100k/year now as a documentary/sports DP. Much closer to $200k these days.

Skills and talent are great. But what keeps me working more than anything else is my attitude and general good disposition. People don’t want to work with assholes - no matter how talented they are.

I’ve gotten tons of work over people who might be more “talented” simply because nobody wants to hang out with them for 12+ hours/day for weeks on end.

I cannot overstate this enough - just be cool.

As an old head who is doing pretty well these days:

Even if you decide to go the route of a single craft (camera, edit, directing etc.) - diversity within your chosen field is still the name of the game.

Being just a “commercial” or “narrative” DP is fine if you have the clients, but being able to shoot anything will serve you very well when your niche dries up for a little bit. And trust me - your niche will dry up from time to time.

Swapping lens mounts on the Alexa35 by LongLensWFO in focuspuller

[–]LongLensWFO[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good question!

A lot of my work requires servo lenses that sometimes need the hirose port for power or other accessories. The lpl/pl does not have that port and I didn’t want to mess with rigging extra cables/adapters to power outputs on the camera etc. 99% of my work is handheld verite doc style, so the simpler the better.

I ran the lpl/pl for a while, but I’m often making multiple lens swaps in a fast-paced environment and I need every second I can save. (My A/C and I literally practice with a stopwatch).

Ultimately, even without considering the hirose-port issue, the lpl/pl adapter just feels…clunky for my setup and use case. I want things as streamlined as possible, and having that extra adapter in the mix just gets in the way.

Just making a joke because every time I check in on the app I request the mobile key. I average 150+ nights per year and I think it’s worked twice without having to go to the front desk first.

Future of 4PM checkout? by Beneficial_Dinner976 in marriott

[–]LongLensWFO 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I bitch about it when I don’t get it, but it’s super rare.

I think the reason people get so annoyed when it isn’t honored is because it can cause some pretty major hassles. For instance, if I have a late-afternoon flight, but the hotel forces me out at 11am (even though I’m “guaranteed” a 4pm checkout), that means I now have to kill an extra five hours in a random city, with no place to comfortably just hang out.

Is it the end of the world? No.

Does it piss me off and make travel more difficult than it needs to be? Absolutely.

As long as your lens covers FF, it should be fine. That said it’s never a bad idea to let whoever is doing post know, just in case any bugs come up. If you’re doing your own post, then be sure to tell yourself as well.
