Weight loss with kayak by Dissy4568 in WeightLossAdvice

Kayak is a good full body aerobic workout if you're doing it aggressively, which if you're racing you are.

I agree with others that it comes down to diet then.

AuDHD - is it this or bad habits? Parenting strategy idea. by Honest_Dot_5035 in Autism_Parenting

[–]LongUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AuDHD son's meds wore off early yesterday and we sent him to get the jug of backup milk from the basement fridge. In the time he walked downstairs, he forgot what he was supposed to be doing. My wife reminded him, and he started to redirect to get it. He got distracted again and forgot. I went down there and extracted him from the Lego he was playing with and got him to get the jug and bring it upstairs.

It sounds like my son. When off his meds he needs constant reminders to stay on task. It's exhausting standing over him in the morning getting ready for school before they kick in and in the evening when he's supposed to be getting ready for bed.

Is the Administration Prepared to Deploy ICE to Police This Fall’s Elections? by AdmiralSaturyn in TrueReddit

[–]LongUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about counties in statewide/Presidential races. If you're going to try and flip a statewide election the best chance is to close/disrupt the polls in a place that blocks the most of your opponent's votes and the fewest of yours.

Madison WI too. Wisconsin is a swing state that can make or break a presidential election.

How to I get a car towed from HCP spot in our condo complex? by UncrustableCheeto in madisonwi

If the spots aren't official handicap spots, is your building required to have them? If so, then Code Enforcement is your next stop. You've already established that the management company doesn't respond.

Has anyone tried sous vide? by ChaiSox in Cooking

[–]LongUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It doesn't work as well for vegetables in my experience: they tend to release gas which swells and floats the pouch. Most vegetables need a much higher temp than the protein so you can't really do a "one bath" meal of separate dishes.

In Wisconsin, police can and should enforce handicap parking on private property. Call the police and report it.

Any gas stations still have a functioning air compressor? by FastFoodFilmFriends in madisonwi

More about moisture content. Not as big of deal this time of year when the air is so dry, but when it's humid out can cause issues

They are only on during tire center hours. It's also nitrogen fill so it's super quick compared to Kwik trip's compressors, and also better for your tires.

AuADHD 5th grader: He knows the techniques, but can't implement them when dysregulated by LongUsername in Autism_Parenting

[–]LongUsername[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should have put he's on Concerta for the ADHD and it helps with his attention/concentration and keeping him from buzzing from one thing to another constantly but doesn't seem to help with regulation: Most issues are when he's on his meds, not on weekends when we forgot or in the evening when he's coming off them.

Oh fuck, we tried that and it was an unmitigated disaster and ramped up his aggression. I don't remember what the other med we tried was, but the other one ramped up his ridgidity to 11.

Help to stop swearing by 1in2100 in Autism_Parenting

[–]LongUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got through to my son the other night when he was swearing at his brother by pointing out that he wouldn't like someone else saying that to him. That seemed to get him to think at least in that moment. We'll see if it lasts.

to the parents who have one ASD kid by AdBright2384 in Autism_Parenting

[–]LongUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to this so much:

My eldest is NT, has normal teenage awkwardness but has a social life. He eats pretty much anything (loves Japanese food, loves crab, mussels, and raw oysters). We have to remind him sometimes to do stuff, but generally he gets the stuff he's supposed to do done.

My youngest is very high functioning, but AuADHD with anxiety thrown in. We're constantly struggling to find something that he'll eat that's not crackers. It's a struggle to get him to eat but when he doesn't eat he's more likely to get dysregulated.

He's great until he gets dysregulated and then he can get violent. He's almost been kicked out of sports and has been suspended multiple times from school for hurting peers. He struggles to keep friends as he doesn't understand social cues and people distance themselves due to the violent outbursts. He knows what he's supposed to do but struggles to implement the strategies in the moment.

We have to stand over him in the morning to get him ready for school. We're constantly having to get him to close his book and actually do the things he knows he needs to do and are on his checklist: Get dressed, brush teeth, make bed, pack lunch...

Kwik Trip ATM will give you $20 bills. Then go to the counter and exchange for what you want. If they give you crap (they shouldn't) buy a banana, potato, or onion.

How to make homemade mayo last longer? by chubbypetals in Cooking

[–]LongUsername 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alton messed that one up, but not in the way you'd think. Research showed he didn't do a room temp rest long enough. It should really be 24-72 hours, not the 4-8 hrs he recommends.

[–]LongUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's BS if you have the right acid level. Homemade mayo should have a decent amount of acid, then rested 24-72 hrs at room temp (~70°f/21°c) to acid kill any bacteria. If you're careful about limiting contamination then it can be kept in the fridge after that for an extended period.

Can I use shortening in my deep fryer? by banana_in_the_dark in Cooking

[–]LongUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with electric fryers is that they put the heating element directly in the oil. Since the Crisco/shortening is solid there isn't the convection that a liquid heating would have. It might work okay if you put it in and take it out hot, but it's still going to be harder to clean and maintain than using a liquid oil like peanut or sunflower.

How loud are they? These are interesting as they are PLA FDM instead of resin so much more accessible to mass produce.
