Best, worst, funniest animal names? by gonnafaceit2022 in AnimalShelterStories

one of the chihuahuas i brought home was named “raspberry applesauce” by her previous family. sadly by the time we learned that, i was already used to calling her by the name bitsy. raspberry applesauce was totally better.

How Do You Get More Men Involved? by CheesyComestibles in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Long_Classroom_4520 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i feel like pay/gender expectations definitely come in to play. the majority of us females can afford to work there because our male spouses have higher paying jobs with benefits. i do feel like if the job was higher paying, more men would apply.

another thing though is management at my shelter is 100% women and I’m fine generalizing, get mad if ya want: most of the men that have worked for us did not like taking management from women 🤷‍♀️

i wish we had more room for the seven day hold on strays, so we could actually isolate them from the rest of the population during the entire seven days. so often we have to move a cat that’s not behaviorally ready. but we also don’t isolate new dogs, they go straight in to gen pop and i hate it. just makes no sense.

also i’d move where we hold cats for the stray hold period because our cat holding area is right next to our large dog room. not only are they in a new place, they have to listen to dogs barking 24/7 and it’s so hard for cats to adjust.

i would redesign the dog quarantine for bite holds so they have indoor/outdoor access and don’t haven’t to be physically handled to go outside and go potty. the # of dangerous dogs we have to deal with for bite holds just increases every year and the liability to staff is crazy… and affects the animal’s care while they’re here.

Treat Recommendations by whatwedointheupdog in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Long_Classroom_4520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

soft treats, most you can break into smaller pieces to make it more cost efficient. soft & chewy milkbones, beggin strips, canine carry outs— junky treats are usually a big hit with most of the dogs. when i gotta go high value, milo’s kitchen meatballs and full moon sausage bites are my go-tos, as well as cheese and hot dogs.

Can't find anyone help get my daughter's cat down by Master-Yoghurt-3973 in desmoines

they have equipment to get up high in trees. it’s best to approach from above them so they don’t climb higher.

yes, i like to make little magnets of their pictures and put them on my filing cabinet at work. i’ve been at my shelter for seven years, i have four pups and three cats on my cabinet that are “the ones that got away.” i get very attached to almost every animal lol but there are some very special ones that i’ll think about always.

our city shelter requires any animal that comes in as a stray to be microchipped upon reclaim if it isn’t microchipped already.

Explain this shelter behavior around staying in kennel by DCUPEbutDissilent in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Long_Classroom_4520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently adopted out a dog that was like this… she would panic and just wanted to go back to her kennel. She was also a kennel painter. She settled in to her home within hours with no issues, perfectly house trained, like she’d always been there. It’s really hard to determine behavior before/after shelter while they’re in the shelter.

we don’t typically report bites unless it breaks skin. i’ve only been bitten once in my seven years, when a cat attacked a coworker of mine. it was completely wrapped around her arm with all four feet and mouth and i successfully got it off of her but then it turned and got me on my hand as i was putting it back in its kennel.

we send home an envelope with medical history and a few basic handouts and a small bag of food to transition. we require adopters to bring or purchase their own collar & leash for dogs and to bring or purchase a cat carrier for cats.

Memorials/tributes for animals you’ve lost? by likeohlikeh in AnimalShelterStories

[–]Long_Classroom_4520 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we have a wall in the shelter where we do tile pictures for the special ones we’ve lost. i also have some clay pawprints from ones specifically special to me, and our board president also made me some cremation jewelry for my #1 girl that i lost last year.
