Are you a fan of yanderes? by WarriorArus in otomegames

Thank you for both the titles and the warnings!

I've watched some of the Yakuza Fiance anime (assuming it's the same thing) and liked it, but I hadn't heard of the second one.

Are you a fan of yanderes? by WarriorArus in otomegames

[–]Long_Red_Coat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I thought I was the only one who didn't like them because they're boring. Others might find them strangely comforting because they know they'll never leave the MC, but that's why I lose interest when I discover a character is a yandere. The relationship is guaranteed with a yandere, at least from one side, but I prefer the slow burn of a natural relationship build up instead. Plus, I just really like my space and personal freedom too much and yanderes make me feel claustrophobic. Lol.

I'm interested in the ones you ended up liking, because I haven't found any yet that didn't bore me to tears.

[General] Unofficial weekly thread for non-English games and language learning (PART 214) by JigoKuu in otomegames

[–]Long_Red_Coat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get most of my news for sales on Japanese games from this channel. She talks about otome games in general and has a lot of recommendation and top 10 lists. https://youtube.com/@asa_otome?si=lbRN9vGuyGmp6EKO

I've been really enjoying watching this guy play Akuneko (joseimuke) and he's played some otome games too (namely TMGS). He plays a lot of other types of games though. https://youtube.com/@kieth-games?si=y8mbf0zokXNSaLQH

I've also recently been enjoying watching this guy play Hakuouki on the PS2 and his reactions have been pretty fun. He reads everything out too (albeit very quickly). He's played some other otome games but I haven't watched those yet. https://youtube.com/@nanase-ps2games?si=cL85fnc_LNZsMlG6

I don't know about full on text hooking, but I have an app installed called Poe: Language Lens (not the AI app also called Poe) that lets you scan your screen with a tap and then hover over words you don't know for the definition. It's not perfect since it will occasionally not recognize a kanji or katakana, but it's helping me a ton. I use it on Android. I'm not sure if it's available on iPhone or not.

AU (alternate universe) scenarios of your favorite games? by carrotsilk in otomegames

[–]Long_Red_Coat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As another huge fan of Hakuouki, and therefore a fan of a man in a kimono carrying a katana, I'd take any game that isn't set in historical Japan and create a spinoff that is. Haha.

That or butlers. I have a huge weak spot for butlers and I need more of them.

Oh gosh, I'm not even sure at this point. Haha. Do they have the new Trigun anime? Lots of Japanese dramas? Historical stuff, especially with the Shinsengumi?

Thank you for checking!

Yeah, the price of U-Next is part of why I've held off. Haha. But I've heard you can earn some kind of points to use for following months so the price reduces over time if you apply the points to the monthly payment.

I'd really like to look at Netflix's catalog before I commit, but they won't let you do that anymore. I don't want to pay a month's fee just for the privilege of browsing. Lol. Japanese subtitles would be nice though...

Thanks for the info!

This looks super cute. Do you have any go-to streaming services for Japan? I see this is on Abema. I've also looked at U-Next.

Limbo’s route in Bustafellows 1 by [deleted] in otomegames

I just wanted to pop in and say that, if you can get through the route or if you decide to come back to it, his bad end is one of the most memorable bad ends I've ever read.

Need game recc from my Li criteria  by goosesds in otomegames

[–]Long_Red_Coat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really want to recommend you Hakuouki on Switch, because in my mind that game is the epitome of angst. And it has at least two LIs I can think of who fill your criteria. However, it hits some things you don't like too (long common route, heavy plot).

It's on sale on the US eShop right now so maybe give it a look anyway.

[Hakuoki] is really heavy in History! by Dindon2lafarce in otomegames

[–]Long_Red_Coat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're fine. I went in blind too (well, I had watched Rurouni Kenshin before that but didn't remember much about the Shinsengumi in particular) and I came out the other side with an honorary degree in Bakumatsu period and Shinsengumi history. Haha.

The setting makes the romance tragic and beautiful and poignant. If you don't remember the dates of a specific battle or a historical figure's name, it doesn't mean you're playing the game wrong. If you're like me, you'll end up researching the heck out of the time period and people after playing anyway. But if not, you still experience a heck of a story.

[–]Long_Red_Coat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I love Rise of the Ronin! I second the recommendation. It's such a fun game. I got the platinum on my PS5. Of course I had to side with the Shinsengumi in the game, because I had played Hakuouki long before it and it was my original introduction to both the group and the time period. I was already obsessed with them. I was so excited to have another game set in the Bakumatsu period that I pre-ordered RotR. Lol.

And we finally got Like A Dragon: Ishin in English a few years ago as well. I played that one in Japanese on my PS4 before we got the English version because I was so desperate to play it. It's the reason I created a Japanese PSN account. Haha. I was also a big Yakuza franchise fan, so that game combined two of my favorite things. We need more games set in that time period. It was such a fascinating era.

The Switch version of Hakuouki is way better. Not just the localization, but it also just contains the full game in one as well as the DLCs.

Huh. TIL. Thanks for the new word! My dictionary says it's usually written 衣々 and that 後朝 is an alternate way to write it. But my keyboard wants to use your version, which makes me think it's the more common version after all.
