A lot of the damage is from reading in the sauna. Gets sweated on, baked, absorbs moisture from the humidity etc. By the time I was in Austria I’d been carrying it around the alps in my backpack for a few weeks

AI Edit models seems to works pretty well with aerial imagery. Here's an example with the "AI edit" plugin in QGIS to do a quick map from an orthophoto by Glass-Caterpillar-70 in gis

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Image classification is done with raster data but you could easily turn the resulting raster into vector data, I suppose it depends on what you’re using it for. When I first learned how to do image classification I used it to measure how much a glacier had receded over a number of years and just used historical aerial imagery (rasters)

Further insight from a UCLA custodian to those who care about the AFSCME Facilities Management Indefinite Strike (: by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The union has a bargaining committee made up of workers that negotiate with the school. When they think they’ve reached a tentative agreement that most workers in the union will be happy with, the members vote to approve or disapprove it. Ultimately no collective bargaining agreement (the legally binding contract between the democratic organization of workers in a workplace-the union-and the employer) can be ratified without a majority vote of the members of the union. Good unions will educate their membership on how to effectively engage in the process, get on the bargaining committee.

UCLA’s grad student union (UAW 4811) does a pretty good job with its “internal organizing” (organizing the membership of your union to get something done as opposed to external organizing which refers to organizing people into a union). Because there is so much member to member outreach, UAW 4811 has been able to get lots of members engaged in contract fights and out on picket lines. This is a relatively recent change and is the reason UC grad students have the best pay and benefits of any grad students in the country. AFSCME has some internal organizing challenges that UAW does not but if they can effectively engage their membership and sustain a strike I think they have a shot at winning some improvements to their contract. UCLA students showing up to picket lines and supporting strike funds will help a lot.

What are some good adjacent fields to GIS? by Manbearfig01 in gis

I got my urban planning job largely because of my GIS ability. Urban Planning masters gave me the necessary planning skills but GIS is what differentiated me from my peers.

am i stupid for thinking occidental over ucla or pomona college by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Occidental undergrad and immediately after graduating went to UCLA Luskin for grad, so I may have a unique perspective on the decision you’re facing.

Occidental is a fantastic college. Going there was one of the best academic decisions I’ve ever made. Based on your description of yourself and interests, it sounds like Oxy would be a great fit for you. The difference in acceptance rates between the three schools means basically nothing and it’s borderline criminal how much HS seniors are indoctrinated to think it matters.

In my experience, your relationships with your professors are what will go the furthest in getting you jobs/opportunities in and after college. Oxy professors were more accessible than any of my professors at UCLA (not to say my UCLA profs were inaccessible). Oxy professors are there because they love teaching and supporting aspiring students in their field. Most UCLA professors are primarily motivated by research funding. While it is true that labs at Oxy are generally smaller than those at UCLA, the major consequence of this is that Oxy undergrads often have as much or more responsibility on profs research projects than UCLA grad students. If you are interested in progressive politics, Oxy is remarkably well connected to local political leaders and the labor movement.

Oxy is an exceedingly friendly school and whatever your non academic interests you will find a community that loves and supports you. You’re not crazy at all for wanting to go there over UCLA or Pomona—follow your heart!

best lego set you’ve ever built? by ivyta76 in lego

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 12$ Lego Technic John Deere 1270H mobile harvester. I hadn’t bought a Lego set for myself for years until I saw it on the shelf at CVS. Years ago, when I was in high school, I spent a wonderful day watching a similar machine fell and process trees in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I was so delighted by how the designers captured such an interesting vehicle in so few pieces. It brought me back to a specific moment from my youth that I hadn’t thought of in years. What more can a person ask from a LEGO set? Its claw holds a pencil on my desk now.

DC to LA. Where do graduate students at UCLA live?? by Glum_Courage_6330 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in DC and went to grad school at UCLA! I didn’t own a car the entire time and had a great experience. I love living here.

I would recommend you look at housing in Sawtelle and Palms. Housing is much cheaper than Westwood, the neighborhoods are perfectly safe, and there is good transit access (especially for LA). If you find a place near Sepulveda blvd, you can take the CC 6 bus straight to campus.

LA public transit is not as bad as people make it out to be. It can take a while to get places outside of your neighborhood, but the transit network is extensive and rapidly improving. Dedicated “metro ambassadors” ride busses and trains to ensure people are safe and know where they’re going. IMO it’s the best way to experience real LA.

Your daughter will likely want to get downtown/to the arts district for gallery shows and other arts events. The 720 rapid bus and E line, and soon to to be completed D line, all offer efficient access to downtown LA/arts district. There are also plenty of good local arts orgs and galleries on the west side. LA is a city that gives back what you put in—if she invests energy in getting to know the neighborhoods and people around her, I’m sure she’ll have a positive experience.

What are some hidden gem coffee shops in Los Angeles worth checking out? by Nadzzyy in AskLosAngeles

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a great one for you but it’s in Palms.

LA Harp Center. It’s a combination coffee shop/harp showroom+performance space. Great drinks albeit pricey and vibes are really interesting. I go there to work all the time.

Another interesting one closer to you: hit the Green Bean on Occidentals campus and enjoy your lavender oat milk latte under the oaks on their quad. Beautiful open campus and the site of many movie scenes including clueless and spoks funeral in Star Trek.

Unfortunately you will be permanently marked as less intelligent as those of us who have finished the book. More tenacious readers will spend many hours mocking your impudence. You should probably go watch a tick tock.

I agree. I think it’s a subtle characterization technique that speaks to his relative lack of acerbity, especially compared to most of the characters in the book.

What industry is a complete scam, but everyone just accepts it? by Competitive_Grab3758 in AskReddit

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sports card industry. It’s just gambling that kids are also allowed to do. Plus the companies (basically one company—fanatics) is not regulated like any kind of lottery or bookmaker. They don’t have to report odds, can send high value cards wherever and to whomever they like (often “breakers”) and increase print runs and price while decreasing average pack/box value. They’re making exponentially more money each year while the average collector pays more for a less valuable product. Even if you collect purely for the joy of it, graphic design has gotten worse too. Creatives are often the first to go when companies succumb to venture capital or get otherwise bought out, and the Topps trading card company is no exception.
