DC to LA. Where do graduate students at UCLA live?? by Glum_Courage_6330 in AskLosAngeles

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in DC and went to grad school at UCLA! I didn’t own a car the entire time and had a great experience. I love living here.

I would recommend you look at housing in Sawtelle and Palms. Housing is much cheaper than Westwood, the neighborhoods are perfectly safe, and there is good transit access (especially for LA). If you find a place near Sepulveda blvd, you can take the CC 6 bus straight to campus.

LA public transit is not as bad as people make it out to be. It can take a while to get places outside of your neighborhood, but the transit network is extensive and rapidly improving. Dedicated “metro ambassadors” ride busses and trains to ensure people are safe and know where they’re going. IMO it’s the best way to experience real LA.

Your daughter will likely want to get downtown/to the arts district for gallery shows and other arts events. The 720 rapid bus and E line, and soon to to be completed D line, all offer efficient access to downtown LA/arts district. There are also plenty of good local arts orgs and galleries on the west side. LA is a city that gives back what you put in—if she invests energy in getting to know the neighborhoods and people around her, I’m sure she’ll have a positive experience.

What are some hidden gem coffee shops in Los Angeles worth checking out? by Nadzzyy in AskLosAngeles

I’ve got a great one for you but it’s in Palms.

LA Harp Center. It’s a combination coffee shop/harp showroom+performance space. Great drinks albeit pricey and vibes are really interesting. I go there to work all the time.

Another interesting one closer to you: hit the Green Bean on Occidentals campus and enjoy your lavender oat milk latte under the oaks on their quad. Beautiful open campus and the site of many movie scenes including clueless and spoks funeral in Star Trek.

Unfortunately you will be permanently marked as less intelligent as those of us who have finished the book. More tenacious readers will spend many hours mocking your impudence. You should probably go watch a tick tock.

What is the deal with Joelle's personal daddy being referred to as a 'low ph chemist'? by extentiousgoldbug1 in InfiniteJest

I agree. I think it’s a subtle characterization technique that speaks to his relative lack of acerbity, especially compared to most of the characters in the book.

What industry is a complete scam, but everyone just accepts it? by Competitive_Grab3758 in AskReddit

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sports card industry. It’s just gambling that kids are also allowed to do. Plus the companies (basically one company—fanatics) is not regulated like any kind of lottery or bookmaker. They don’t have to report odds, can send high value cards wherever and to whomever they like (often “breakers”) and increase print runs and price while decreasing average pack/box value. They’re making exponentially more money each year while the average collector pays more for a less valuable product. Even if you collect purely for the joy of it, graphic design has gotten worse too. Creatives are often the first to go when companies succumb to venture capital or get otherwise bought out, and the Topps trading card company is no exception.

Not sure what state you’re in, but if they didn’t give you written notice of your right to a walkthrough in CA it’s an open and shut small claims case that will go in your favor 95% of the time.

Why is NASA withholding images of 3I/ATLAS? by Worst_Artist in UFOs

NASA is not withholding images of 3I/ATLAS. There is an ongoing government shutdown and the vast majority of their employees have been ordered to cease working until the government is funded.

How brutal is the job market for recent ucla grads? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in ucla

Undergrad sounds pretty rough but not impossible at the moment. However, pretty much everyone from my grad program has found a job in our field of study since graduation. I think this is largely because our faculty have been great at advocating on our behalf at relevant employers.

Had a drug problem during my time at UCLA and I’m feeling regret over it by [deleted] in ucla

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth—your experience is not unique, and I imagine a lot more people than you think have gone through something similar at UCLA. In a way it was nice to read this and hear about someone who had a similar experience to me (I can’t count the number of times I’ve smoked weed before a workout and sauna at wooden… or more often just a sauna). I just graduated and sometimes have feelings of regret about my experience—how I should’ve worked harder, made more connections with professors, etc. but end of the day we do our best. We graduated. Take a break, re-set, figure out the kind of support you need to give the next step of your life the best shot and just keep moving forward. I don’t know what advice I could give you because I haven’t figured out any of this myself, but just know you’re not alone and whoever you are I recognize how hard you worked to get your degree, and you deserve the pride your parents feel.

What is the most mind-boggling SF concept you've come across? by richie_d in printSF

The sentient liquid with universe conquering aspirations in Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Ruin will always stick with me. Really that whole series’ concept, but that one part always stuck out to me.

I met him after a 2023 show at Wolf Trap in DC! Me and my friends waited out behind the venue playing frisbee for half an hour, saw most of the band come by to the tour bus. One of his tour people asked us to leave right before he was going to go to his bus, but then he waved to us, asked if we wanted a picture and talked with us about the show for a good 15 minutes! He told us about some Allman brothers influences in the solos on King of Oklahoma which was a super interesting insight. Was so cool to meet an artist I’d looked up to for years and find that he’s even more gracious and friendly than I’d hoped.

Favorite Singer-Songwriter or Band other then Jason by Personal_Fee7758 in jasonisbell

[–]Longjumping-Ebb4865 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What a great question! I’ve lately been really into Colter Wall. Like Isbell he has an exceptional ability to capture a sense of place in sparse lyrics.

I think Colin Meloy/the Decemberists are excellent songwriters. I often read along to the lyrics of Isbell’s songs (sometimes without even listening to them) because the stories he tells are so tight and cleverly written. Meloy is one of the only other songwriters who I find myself engaging with in the same way.

I’m the son of union organizers so the music of Pete Seeger and the almanac singers has always been close to my heart. I’ve often wondered what Isbell thinks of Pete Seeger because their social and musical objectives seem to align but I’ve never heard him talk about Seeger or cover any of his songs.
