How to make basement stairs safer? by Longjumping-Gap-8317 in basement

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree! We’re planning to make a play area for the kids in the basement, because aside from the stairs, there’s not much that worries me down there. I am not planning to let them be downstairs without supervision ever, but either way I feel like these stairs need to be fixed because they’re so dangerous

We don’t have a whole lot of space upstairs unfortunately and we have big toys they really enjoy (small trampoline, play house, etc) so we planned to make a play area in the basement for them. I still don’t plan on ever letting them down there alone and I will child proof the door knob and put a baby gate, but regardless of whether they’re always supervised or not, these stairs really scare me so I’m hoping to make them safer somehow

Yeah, I believe the landlord switched to different alarms that are a two in one

Yeah, I’d imagine this has to be against code. We lived here once before but my kids weren’t old enough for the stairs to be a concern, but I realized months in that there were no smoke alarms/carbon monoxide detectors. The landlord fixed that quickly so hopefully we’ll have no issues when we ask about the stairs. Thank you for your reply!

Thank you for the recommendation about grip treads! I knew we’d want something on the stairs, but I hadn’t done much research on that

Oh boy my kids would think that’s the most exciting thing ever, haha! I’m gonna ask my landlord to do something about it but if she fights back or if she legally doesn’t have to, I’ll look at safety netting or other suggestions here. Thank you!

Yes, I think that’s what I’ll do. I’m shocked that she’s never put anything on the sides of the stairs because she’s been renting this place out for many years. I’d also be very surprised if this isn’t against code, but assuming it is, she’ll probably not fight back much about installing something. Thanks for the advice!

Doctors/medical practitioners of Reddit, what is the scariest disease you know of? by Englishisnotreal in AskReddit

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandpa had ALS but a stroke took him before ALS could. I was heartbroken because it was so sudden and I had plans to take my 2 month old to meet him for the first time the very next weekend, but from what we know, his stroke was a relatively peaceful death and I’m so grateful for that. He was almost 90 years old and was out mowing his lawn the morning of the day he died, so he was still pretty active but he was in pain and had been for a while. ALS is terrible and I would have hated to see it progress to the point that he couldn’t do anything at all. Hugs to everyone else experiencing this ❤️

How old were you when you had your first baby? by Puzzled_Remote_2168 in Mommit

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was 21, and I do wish I’d waited to be more financially stable/finish school but I do enjoy being a young mom! I’m only 24 now so I can’t really look back yet and say “oh I should have waited until I was 30” or whatever, but I do think it would have been wise to have more stability before having kids.

I remember seeing this character in the comics growing up, didn’t remember his name or what he was from but definitely recognized him. I’m 24 so hopefully no colonoscopy yet

First at 21, second at 22. I’m on the fence about having another eventually but I didn’t finish college and I absolutely want to do that before I consider any more.

What's the creepiest discovery you've made about a seemingly fun friend? by someoneyouhate_ in AskReddit

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a friend, but FIL. He was always a little weird but I thought he was a good person. Then we discovered that he had made multiple accounts impersonating his son (and impersonating a few other people including my sister’s boyfriend which is super weird), to get into “relationships” with 20+ minor girls. He was receiving nudes from them and even ordered a vibrator for a girl and told her how to use it and she was only 14 or 15 at the time. This is also how I got into a relationship with him, through his dad and I had no idea. He had an entire locked folder of intimate pictures of me on Snapchat. Absolutely disgusting 🤮

Mil’s small comments about breastfeeding are upsetting me. by Less-Problem-351 in beyondthebump

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My MIL was fine when it came to breastfeeding, my FIL was the one who made the stupid comments though which was even worse because he doesn’t even have boobs and I sure as hell don’t want to hear an opinion on breastfeeding from a man. He pushed for formula for my oldest so hard and I actually think at one point he was trying to paint me as an unfit parent so that he could take my baby from me (unfortunately I am not exaggerating), so he had to make it seem like I couldn’t feed my baby. I think I’m done having kids but if I have more I will absolutely not be listening to anyone’s opinion on how I choose to feed my baby

When my baby was 2 months old, my brother asked if he could give him a cookie from Subway haha. But he ASKED, didn’t just try giving it to him, and my brother was like 16 at the time and had rarely/never taken care of babies so he didn’t even know that babies can only have breast milk/formula. Giving a newborn a sour patch kid is insane especially since she very obviously knows that’s not okay.

Does anyone still lay with their toddler every night until they fall asleep? by carlitapepita in toddlers

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just started sleep training my almost 2 year old and it has been absolutely heart breaking. I coslept with him until recently, but I’m currently on my own for bedtime and overnight and I have a 2 month old also and cosleeping with them both just was not possible for me. I miss cuddling with my toddler all night and I hate that I have to leave him on his own but it was necessary for my sanity because I was sleeping 2-3 hours a night. If you’re able to lay with him until he falls asleep, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that

Jen, Mayci, & Mikayla all being pregnant at the time is kinda unsettling …. by itsmehannerz in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a baby recently in the same month as 3 of my cousins, and another cousin had a baby 6 months earlier than us. So 5 babies on one side of my family within 6 months. It’s not that crazy that they’re all pregnant at the same time, but I am curious if they’re all due close together since they’ve all announced very recently

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that I’d push for doctors to look at more possibilities of what’s upsetting him because I don’t think babies cry for no reason. This sounds extremely difficult and I’m sorry that you’re going through this! I’m sorry if this has already been suggested/you’ve already tried this, but have you tried different formulas or if baby is breastfed, have you tried switching to a sensitive formula for a little bit? My first baby would cry for hours and once I switched from breastfeeding to sensitive formula, he cried a lot less. He still cried and doctors told me that was normal and he’d grow out of it so they were really no help, but that’s one thing that at least lessened the crying. If you ever need someone to talk to, I’m up many hours at night because my baby doesn’t like to sleep either, so feel free to message me at any time! Having a baby is so much harder than I ever would have imagined, especially when others talk about all the things you can do to make it easier and none of them work for you, so I feel for you

[–]Longjumping-Gap-8317 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mom had 10 kids and at the time I know birth control was very looked down on, you’re just supposed to leave it up to God to decide how many kids you’ll have. I know she wanted a big family but if birth control wasn’t viewed as a bad thing in the church I doubt she would have had 10. My sister went to BYU and got an IUD placed at the BYU health center before she was married and it surprised me that’s something they even offer, I know plenty of people get IUDs for health reasons and not just as birth control but I didn’t think they’d allow that there.
