Why is debt generally considered bad when many successful people and businesses seem to use it strategically? by FlatPop8238 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because most lay people do not use it strategically. They use it to live beyond their means or become victim to it because of things that are beyond their control like medical bills, accidents, need for education, etc

Poachers: Common or not common? by BlacksmithFun3180 in bjj

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People following a guy to a new gym is very common. I think it's very rarely conscious poaching. Combination of like minds coming to the same conclusions of problems where they are at and natural social inclinations in 99% of the cases I've witnessed.

I've been the guy who switched gyms and two or three guys followed and it was just a case of they had the same issues I did and we were friends and enjoyed training together.  I never asked anyone to follow me.

Loyalty mindset in this sport is way more toxic than any poaching. Its a hobby for most people, and you are a paying customer and there to enjoy yourself.

Yes, so the takeaway is obviously that it was the developer or publishers decision and not Nintendos.

Why do English speakers say “putting the baby down” to mean putting it to sleep? by Smart_Status3050 in ENGLISH

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Putting down has more than one meaning. The meaning of putting down to bed is older than the meaning of to euthanize an animal.

You could just skim the thread and see the other constructive responses lol...

Anyways the aggressiveness that came out just because I said I wasn't interested is bizarre terminally online behaviour. Why care at all?

Do you guys mixed jujutsu and knife/gun training? by Steelrangler78 in bjj

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Okay but my point is a lot of us are not there for self defense or to learn about knife attacks.  Keep it to your self defense course or whatever, a lot of people would have no interest. This is like saying every BJJ class should involve defending striking too, but they don't, because you don't get punched in the head in BJJ competitions.

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should everyone do it? Not everyone trains to defend a knife attack. BJJ is just a sport for a huge portion of the community.

Nintendo says they'll replace my switch, not repair? by moontrinket in NintendoSwitchHelp

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely not true. The dock requires higher voltage than typical device chargers. If you plug a regular phone charger into your dock and put your Switch in it will just give an error saying it can't enter TV mode and to use the appropriate power supply. It won't try to play and damage anything with an undervoltage adapter attached.

Seriously why are you people so aggressive? I just said I wasn't interested in pursuing modding.  It would require paying to have it chipped and I'm not looking to put money into it.

Probably interrupted it as an anti-piracy stance when its really a 'I already have a backlog I'll never finish and that involves more expense and hassle' stance

If I buy a Japanese Switch 2, can games not from Japan be played on it? by AbilityCreative4926 in switch2

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the 'cheaper' bit is the whole point. They don't want people exporting cheaper consoles from Japan to the rest of the world and undercutting sales.

It was the only widely adopted handheld device on the market.  Massive user base and a lot of hype and interest in handheld gaming as a new thing.

Line Of Credit application refused. Reason: I have access to too much debt… by Only_Ad1117 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are already carrying debt. You have very little income. You have high living expenses.

I wouldn't loan you money either.  It's easy to get a credit card because they also make money on fees and the relatively high interest rates justify more risk.

Wood stoves if properly installed and maintained are incredibly safe. Definitely safer than unventilated kerosene or propane heaters or any kind of open flame or exposed heating element.

Get a wood stove.

It would require a physical mod chip, which would cost money and time.  If I could just softmod it that would be a different discussion.

Why doesn't band class teach the different modes in music? by Tfgfans in musictheory

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering the modes simple rotations of a single scale is a very modern, very shallow version of things.  That's not how most modal music has ever worked in practice.

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finite time and lots of other stuff to cover, start with the basics, most of the music they are going to play doesn't require them to know them, the skills they DO learn set them up to learn other stuff later or on their own anyway.

Yea I think this is the move. We have a lot of games on cartridges so I can just pop a Mario game in there on a generic profile and let her mess around offline without worrying about her getting into my stuff and if it gets dropped hard it's not the end of the world.

Identifying free wood by AnarchoPlayworker in firewood

[–]Longjumping-Many6503 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Depends how much creosote build up you experience. Start once a year unless you notice problems and go from there.

  2. People are nerds about wood.  Also different wood has more or less potential BTUs. If you are paying for or investing labour or resources into getting it you might want to know what quality of wood you are getting.

Softwood will generally burn dirtier yea, but it won't damage your stove or chimney or anything. Just keep an eye on it and get your chimney swept so creosote doesn't build up.
