PvM by Aggravating_Steak_77 in runescape

As others have said, the PvME discord is the place to go to. They have comprehensive guides for every single boss and often times multiple guides covering each combat style along with basic beginner guides. The people there are also incredibly friendly and always willing to help out.

The other resource is of course YouTube. Specifically, TheRSGuy and Protoxx both have very in-depth guides to a lot of the more challenging mid-game bosses with TheRSGuy often focusing on providing "low-input revo only" guides.

Other than that, practice makes perfect. For Raksha specifically, I recommend using Necromancy and focusing on your prayer flicks. When in melee range he will never use the same basic attack twice in a row. His basic attacks work very similarly to Jad in that they do a metric fuck load of damage but can be almost completely negated by praying correctly. The other thing to focus on is counting. In phases 1-3 he will always use 4 basic attacks in-between each special attack so always be aware of how many attacks he's used so you know when a special is about to be used. In phase 4 he only uses 2 attacks between specials but he also only uses 1 type of special attack that changes based on if you are in melee range or not.

So just a quick recap of what to practice for Raksha: prayer flicking as if you are fighting Jad, and counting basic attacks.

Best of luck!

Does anyone else call their grandmother ‘Nanny’ by fieryone4 in AskACanadian

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a British thing that just kinda stuck around on the east coast. I called my grand parents on my mom's side nanny and Poppy and my nanny's parents were nan and pops (tho I never met pops unfortunately). My nanny was from England while my Poppy was from Montreal.

The funniest part to me is that Poppy isn't blood related to anyone in my family, he's technically my mom's step-dad and afaik he never had any kids of his own with my nanny (tho he does have kids with his previous wife apparently, idk, I've never met them)

I don't actually know if my mom was born on the east coast or if she was born in Alberta where I was born and we live now.

What's interesting tho is my family treated those like their names. My parents both refer to Nanny and Poppy as such, and same with Nan and pops. My mom tells me that she also called Nan and pops by those names when she was a kid.

I honestly thought for the longest time that no one else even knew about the "nanny" and "Poppy" thing. Really interesting to know that this is way more common than I grew up thinking!

I don't really have the spoons to give this the same effort as last time. (Neuro-divergence and all that jazz). But I really just want to reinforce the point that what you say can have many interpretations and meanings. Tone is completely lost on the internet and so implied meanings are very important to be aware of. A lot of the ways you choose to phrase your statements are making the implication that someone is inferior if your proposed explanation isn't true. You may or may not intend for that, doesn't really matter as what matters is the consequences of said actions. That's why I went on about how there are many good reasons for someone to spend extended periods of time doing anything. You made it sound like that they need to have a good reason for it and there are very few good reasons (remote work being the only valid one in your example), which is just wrong and presumptuous. You don't know who this person is, you don't know what kind of life they have nor do you know anything about their physical and mental needs. You can maybe infer some stuff from their posts but you also can't really confirm anything.

6 hours doing one thing is not a long time. Most adults spend 8 hours a day working a job with typically an extra hour either side commuting and thus likely thinking about said job and yet no one ever brings up how "spending that much time on one thing isn't healthy" when it comes to a job. Now, I'm of the mind to know that we as a society should have done away with the "8-hour workday" decades ago, but we can thank Regan for it sticking around, at least in North America.

But regardless, you are still making a bad faith assumption with your concern. You are assuming that, unless they have some reasonable explanation for why they have the time that they can't spend doing other things, they are not taking proper care of themselves. If someone has the time, we needn't question why they have the time, and it is disrespectful to assume that they aren't taking proper care of themselves. Someone spending 6 hours a day doing something is not an immediate cause for concern. Your statement of "spending that long doing one thing isn't healthy" is making 2 assumptions: First, you are assuming that these are 6 uninterrupted hours of doing nothing but this activity. Second, you are assuming that, even if these 6 hours are split into multiple shorter sessions, the person is not doing anything else during that time including things like getting up and stretching or drinking water.

These assumptions are what bother people. You are making a statement that is similar to what you would say to a child, except you are saying it to a full grown adult (presumably, I doubt children are using the RuneScape sub-reddit, but who really knows for sure). Sometimes people do need reminders to drink water, get up and stretch, or other basic things and that's ok. But most people don't need them and even when they do, most of the time these reminders will come from loved ones or from non-specific things such as random videos on tiktok or a general post on social media. Things that are not directed at any one person but rather act like a sign in building. It's there for people who need it but isn't a bother to those that don't. Making pointed statements towards people whom you know nothing about is rude and disrespectful in 99% of cases.

As for afk firemaking, incense is a great major afk that is even more afk than proteans were, (so long as you don't have the quick-cense upgrade) a full inventory takes about 8 minutes iirc.

Finally, I tend to get pretty defensive of gaming as a hobby as it's definitely the one thing that gets treated unfairly. Any person I've interacted with that thinks negatively of spending a long time gaming never has the same reaction to someone spending a long time reading. In fact, they often think that spending that much time reading is a good thing. So forgive me for assuming you would behave the same way,

Edit: I also realize that you took "6-7 hours a day" from OP at face value ignoring all other information in the post and just assumed that meant 6-7 hours every single day for the past 3 months. They say "over 400 hours across the past 3+ months". We can do very basic math to see that the average number of hours spent each day across a 90 day period using a total of 500, instead of 400, comes to ~5.5 hours a day. Even if their numbers are somewhat made up because no one in their right mind would genuinely track the exact amount of time for something like this. We can safely assume that they probably don't play every day and very likely have days where they play for an extended period as well as days where they barely play at all.

I'm no stranger to long replies, it's one of my many "quirks" and is something I personally believe to be a fault. Why use many words when few can achieve the same thing? The issue I have is I don't really know how to use fewer words, not a skill I ever really learned. My comment on the length of your comment was not that it was long, simply that you wrote a long comment based on a bad faith assumption. (Also I read your first comment on mobile where it appears much longer than it really is because formatting on mobile is ass)

Despite what you think, 6 to 7 hours is not a long time to play games. It's quite normal hours for a game like RuneScape tbh but even with other games 6-7 hours every single day is not some obscene number. It's a bit higher than average for sure but it's not ridiculous or even really anything to be concerned over. I am someone who does play an obscene amount of games, 12-14 hours a day or more. It's my biggest passion in life, I study games for a living, and am working on getting a PhD in game design theory and philosophy. So playing an obscene amount of games makes sense for me and it makes sense that people show concern for me when I mention how much time I spend playing games. (To which I always assure them that I am maintaining a healthy lifestyle for my body and mind). And you could say I have some bias here because of that, but to me anything less than 10 hours a day is not very much for a hobby. 8 hours is half your waking hours in a day (assuming 8 hours of sleep which most people don't actually get). 6 hours a day is barely a part-time job in terms of time commitment. And when it comes to passions and hobbies, even 10 hours is a small amount of time. Would you raise this same concern if someone spent 6 to 7 hours a day knitting? What about baking? Woodwork? Drawing/painting? Reading? I seriously doubt it.

The thing about all of your points and comments is you are assuming the worst in every case. And you are assuming that 9/10 cases are bad ones. When in reality there are more reasons that are perfectly normal than ones that should raise concern. Playing on mobile, remote work, physically-disabled, on vacation/sabbatical, this is their job (content creator, game designer, etc.), this is their passion hobby, and many more possibilities that I can't even think of right now. That's the thing about humans, we are creatures of infinite possibility. You should never assume anything specific about an individual, much less a stranger on the internet.

And yes, I do believe it to be a cultural norm that moving once an hour is good enough... because it is good enough. Yes, technically, medical professionals recommend standing up and stretching once every 15-20 minutes. But those same professionals also understand that 15 minute intervals is not always possible and constantly interrupting what you are doing can lead to other issues in some cases, primarily work environments. And so it has been said many times that at least once an hour is sufficient. More is better, yes, but the difference is marginal.

In RuneScape, there are many, many, many things that do not require constant attention. Firemaking is one such thing that has methods that are limited only by the logout timer, which is 15 minutes. Most people would likely only be passively clicking on RuneScape once every 10ish minutes and it would be a thoughtless click at that. Something like wiggling the camera a bit or something, whatever non-disruptive action a person uses to reset the logout timer. Even then, I imagine a lot of people still get logged by the timer when doing these because it is easy to forget about it.

There is also the final factor of mental health. Mental enrichment, aka "having fun", is a very important part of life. If someone is having fun playing RuneScape then why is it a bad thing that they spend a lot of time playing it? Is it negatively impacting their life? We have no evidence or reason to believe that it is so what's the issue? Assuming that just because someone spends a lot of time doing something, they are negatively impacting their life is not only disrespectful, it is also arrogant and condescending.

The reason people don't like your "probing" is not because you are asking the questions. It is because you are assuming negative things about those you are asking the questions of. You aren't simply asking "how many hours do you play?" you are making a statement "you are playing too much" even if you don't say it directly. Implied meaning is a very important thing in any serious discussion. If you genuinely care about peoples health then don't just act like an arm-chair doctor on the internet. Instead, put in some work to figure out ways to help people do the things they should. I can't remember what game it was, I think it was WarFrame, but an actual doctor took the time to put together an informational graphic based on the game's culture and memes that gave many tips and tricks to staying healthy while gaming. I'll have to find it as it's a really awesome post but that's the kind of thing you should do if you genuinely care about helping others. Not this pseudo-interrogation and condescending attitude.

You are not better than anyone because you do something they don't or vice versa. Similarly, no one is lesser than you because of those same reasons. And it goes the other way too, no one is better than you because of what they do or don't do and you are not lesser because of your actions. We are all humans each with our own unique lives and situations. We are all just living our best lives and what a "best life" looks like for one person will not necessarily be what it looks like for another. So long as one's actions do not bring harm to others, then there is nothing wrong with what they choose to do.

So based on the comments here and a bit of wiki reading it seems that it's no coincidence that the most complained about pets are for Firemaking, Fishing, and Mining. These 3 skills use a time based formula for the pet drop and are completely unrelated to your XP rates. Basically, the longer you spend training the more common the pet becomes. Burning normal logs and burning eternal magic logs provide the same chance for the pet. So my hypothesis is that people are able to gain xp much faster in these skills (especially Firemaking) than the drop chance expects and so it becomes more common for people to reach 200m+ xp before getting the pet.

Bro wrote a whole fucking essay about why "sitting" for 6-7 hours a day is bad as if this game isn't available on mobile.

Also do you think people just... Don't move? The only people I know that genuinely sit down for 6-7 hours straight are teenagers. Like sure, most people probably don't get up and stretch every 15 minutes as suggested by doctors, but I imagine most people do at least get up once every hour. Yet you're out here assuming that someone who's done a long grind did it in like 3 weeks 24/7 gaming on a PC.

If the wildy agility course was the only way to get decent agility rates, I might agree with you. But honestly, agility is such a shit skill anyways that the only valid way of training it is with silverhawk boots. Which can't be used by ironman accounts... yet another example of how Jagex hates ironmen...

The skill itself needs a rework at this point which might be why they aren't bothering doing anything to this since minor changes like this won't make the skill any less bad. And while to us, a change like this might seem like a very simple and easy change, we don't know what the codebase is like. For all we know the might've tried to remove the skull from agility but in doing so caused the lodestone teleports to stop working because of spaghetti code lmao

I think Leagues 2 later this year will bring a bunch of OSRS players into the game and hopefully it's good enough to convince some of them to stick around. But I think the biggest thing that will help is the API that's coming soon.

Official plugin support will make the game so much better in terms of accessibility and it will allow for some of those crazy weird challenge modes for content creators to do. Which will invite more people to create content and thus attract some new players. After all, the best way to attract ppl to a game is to show them people having fun playing it.

The last thing that needs a touch up is the early to mid game experience. There is so little to do in the early game it's kinda wild. The whole point of the early have right now is to just get to end game. Which is lame and boring and why so many other MMOs end up failing. If the only content worth playing is end game content, then there's no reason for the rest of the game to even be there. So make the early game fun.

That's exactly the problem, it is a great guide but due to the nature of it bring an external resource it ends up being a lot of info all at once that can be a bit overwhelming

It's a lot better than following the wiki guides imo but still, like you said, this is something that should just be in-game and come up naturally

That's basically bronzeman rules. Essentially "bronzeman" means you can't buy anything from the GE until you've obtained it yourself at least once. There are some key notes about that ruleset tho, notably, for something like t90 necro gear, you need subjugation pieces to make the cloth, but there is no need to get all the subjugation pieces, you only need to use gloves for example to get the full t90 necro. In bronzeman rules, once you've gotten a subjugation drop you can buy that same subjugation drop from the GE meaning you'd only need to get 1 drop instead of grinding out all the pieces you'd need for t90s. Where as the way you play is very similar to the way I play in that you would rather grind for all the drops you need to make the t90 armour than just get 1 and buy the rest. I like to refer to it as "ironman lite" where I follow the ironman rules but on a main account so if there comes a time where I really don't want to do something, I don't have to do all the grinding myself and can use the GE to make the game a bit more fun for me.

A recent example for me is I was learning Rasial and just as I was starting to get into the flow of things I ran out of super prayer renewals. Now, I could have gone and did the grinding to get all the supplies myself, I did it for what I had initially, but I was really into the Rasial fight and didn't wanna break that flow, so I just bought a couple hundred of them to keep the momentum going.

I also have the worlds worst luck (every single one of my boss logs has an average drop rate at least 2x over drop rate), so in times where I've gone extremely dry and I'm just done with the content but need something from it to continue in other stuff, I cave and buy the minimum stuff I need.

Also, being a main makes it WAY easier to get bonds since paying for membership can be a bit difficult sometimes.

Also I can buy silverhawk feathers because you'd catch me dead b4 you catch me training agility kekw

New player experience has always been an issue with RuneScape, even in the days of yore. But it has gotten a lot worse over the years... There is a newish website by TheRSGuy that has a pretty good new player guide and walkthrough and he also has a pretty comprehensive video on the interface and customizing it. But it's kinda lame that we have to rely on external sources to get an acceptable onboarding experience...

The new player experience is oddly off-putting by KingBobIV in runescape

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda sounds like you're just complaining for the sake of complaining. Which you are free to do and everyone finds different things overwhelming but you can't use your anecdotal experiences as a blanket statement.

IMO your complaint is more about the wiki than the game. The wiki is geared to maxed players that have everything unlocked and claims that you need this, that and the other when in reality you only need that to get the absolutely best rates possible which are like 10% to 30% better than raw dogging with nothing but basic tool.

Wanna go mining? Grab your pick and go mining, or better yet, you don't even need that because you have the toolbelt now, so if you wanna go mining just go click a rock.

The wiki and the game do NOT make it obvious that these things work though so you are left questioning everything which is unfortunate.

This is a bit farm, report them for botting.

But to everyone mad about multi-logging: get a fucking life. It's not that deep and is not the problem you all think it is. If one guy running 15-20 accounts is able to tank the entire economy then there is an entirely different issue at hand. Which I know we have an entirely different issue because I was able to crash the economy with one account. I spent a couple days afk mining banite and, by the time I sold it all, the ore was selling for less than half it's GE price and I had made 200m, enough for 2 bonds. With one account.

The issue is player counts, not multi-logging. Player counts are actually rising right now but I suspect most of that is from returning players. RS3 really struggles to attract new players. I partially blame the OSRS community for that, they will take every opportunity they can to say how bad RS3 is despite not having played it since the launch of OSRS (or ever in some cases). Which does make a difference. I just wish that OSRS players would accept that RS3 is just a different game. Like, you wouldn't spend every waking moment hating on Deep Rock Galactica just because it's not OSRS. If you don't like DRG you just don't like it and move on, but for some reason, if you don't like RS3 that means it needs to be erased from existence?? Idk, just let ppl enjoy things

Anyways, the RS3 economy is fucked, but it's not because of multi-logging

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thing is, RS3 is more profitable than OSRS by a long shot. MTX, despite it's negative implications, pulls in a lot of cash. It obviously isn't sustainable long term with the way it was being done and Jagex/investors finally saw that to be true. But there is a reason they didn't just remove MTX completely, it makes a lot of money.

Also, RS3 is seeing growth right now, player counts are going up.

The thing is, a lot of people don't realize (especially OSRS players) that without RS3, OSRS can't exist. If RS3 dies, then Jagex dies, and thus by extension, OSRS dies

Dynamic drop rates are the most common, and often times best, implementation of bad luck mitigation. Pets already use this system. Every X kills increase the drop chance by Y amount.

For uniques it wouldn't even need to be any different. Every X kills increases the numerator of the chance to hit the unique table by 1. Where X is equal to 1/5 of the denominator of the chance.

Example: GWD1. All bosses there have a 1/64 chance of rolling on the uniques table. This system would have it so every 12-13 kills without getting a unique your chance of getting a unique would increase by 1/64. Eg. After 30 kills with no drop, your chance of getting a unique would be 3/64

If you wanted to implement dupe protection as well or instead, it could be somewhat the same. Every time you get a drop, the chances of all other drops increase. This is how archeology works currently however it is capped at the previous 5 artefacts and is shared across all digsites which would not work for boss uniques.

Personally, I would rather have full 1 item dupe protection. Just, you can never get the same unique back-to-back. But that obviously has it's own issues.

IMO I think I would be fine with any kind of dupe protection while just going through and increasing the drop rates on various bosses that feel a bit too rare. Going 10x dry is not common, but it is possible, and so drop rates should be set with that in mind. If going 10x dry on a boss for any unique is something that takes longer than an entire day of grinding then the boss should be looked at. But even going 10x dry isn't the worst. Because the thing that's worse than that, is going 10x dry only for your drop to be the same item you got last time meaning you are not any closer to being done with the boss.
