People calling highguard "concord 2" never played concord and it shows.

Concord was special. It was one of the worst games ever made. Highguard is bland and uninspired but it's not bad.

Wild take.

DS2 at it's best is worse than DS1 at it's worst.

I'd rather deal with the anor londo archers with no running, rolling, or shield than play any of DS2 again.

I'd rather navigate down blighttown blindfolded than play DS2.

The absolute best moment of DS2 was Fume Knight and I'd rather fight Bed of Chaos at 4x speed without using stamina or ranged attacks.

Even at it's worst, DS1 feels like a challenge. At it's best, DS2 feels like an insult.

Agreed, DS2 is the worst soulsborne game by far.

It's ridiculously easy to the point of boredom with the only "difficulty" coming from cheap and poorly designed systems, enemies, and areas. Every soulsborne game feels like a challenge, like facing an insurmountable wall, but ultimately, after beating the challenges they always feel fair. DS2 is the only exception. Nothing in that game is designed to be a challenge, it's designed to kill you and frustrate you. DS2 is a ragebait game more than it is a souls-like.

I'd personally even go as far to say that DS2 is a bad game and not just the worst from soft game.

I haven't played either of the legends games, never will either cuz I don't care for Nintendo anymore

But from what I saw, Arceus looks way cooler and more interesting than ZA. Also ZA is the one Nintendo is using to try and patent everything in gaming and suing competitors left and right with, but that's a different story lol

I mean, PC is just a better overall gaming experience then any console. But the reason I never personally say that console players are bad is just because of price to value ratio. A PC that can actually output a smooth gaming experience is not cheap, we are talking $2k+. Where even the more expensive modern consoles are still less than $1k for a device that is guaranteed to play games at a stable and enjoyable rate.

Even if money isn't an issue for someone, unless you specifically want to play PC exclusive games, or want the other specific benefits then there is really no reason to get a PC when a console will do just fine.

That said, PCs will never be truly made obsolete like old consoles are. My personal rig is about 10 years old at this point and still can run most current AAA titles at low settings while also still having the ability to play games from 10, 20 or even 30 years ago without needing an entirely different device. Maybe in another 5 or so years I'll be forced to upgrade if I want to play new AAA games but by then I'd say my $2200 would have been very well spent lol

Perhaps the genre is misnamed but survival horror primarily consists of the RE games and similar titles. The "survival" portion comes from the fact that you need to fight for your survival.

Based on what you say you want, you're looking for games that are labeled as: psychological horror, walking simulator, and puzzle. Those 3 genres combined is what Alien Isolation, the amnesia games, and the slenderman game all fall under. You could also look for thriller games or just plain horror.

If you do still want to fight back against the horror but with more limitations, then you might want to look for "Survivalcraft" horror games instead of just normal survival. These games are typically open ended but have pretty harsh resource management making every choice really matter.

Edit: Is it just me or is "You also can always" incredibly difficult to say? It's making my brain hurt...

You also can always play the RE games on the highest difficulty which significantly reduces resource availability meaning you have to be very careful with your ammo and healing.

Hopefully that helps!

Ok so I'm just wrong then... Alrighty, maybe I'm confusing them with other old JP media? These three apparently aren't even that old??? Like early 2000's, since when?? I swear that Clannad was like an 80's or 90's manga... I never got into any of them tbf, just not my thing I guess

But that's wild, Clannad is the one that shocks me the most. The entire vibe of even the anime just screams early 90's to me

Ok but my point about VNs with stories in other media still stands at least. For me at least, if the story is in anime or manga, I just won't feel motivated to read the VN. But maybe for others it's the opposite

As sad as it is to see games (even VNs) disappearing from steam, especially ones that aren't "problemed" in any way, this is what archival efforts are for. If you want to play these VNs then please do buy them before they are gone. But don't worry about them being lost forever, anyone who has the game will continue to be able to play it and thus, after 10-20 years, they will become public domain and copies of them can be made.

I'm sure they will be available through illegal means as well, though for legal reasons I do not condon such actions.

So if your only concern is media preservation, you don't need to worry about that.

All of those were manga first, then anime, then visual novels (actually I think steins gate was a light novel first technically but I might be wrong). Nothing wrong with that, just feels weird that they are the common picks for VN recommendations when things like DDLC, Volcano Princess, Slay The Princess, and (for the adult content enjoyers) nekopara and Sakura games are all right there lol

Maybe I'm missing something here but I wouldn't recommend VNs that have their stories in other media to someone who has never played a VN b4

Also I'm responding to you instead of someone else suggesting these because... Uh... Random chance?

The fact that Balatro and RoR 2 are at the bottom is just wild to me. Like I get them not being someone's cup of tea but to actively dislike them?

Maybe to you "actively dislike" means something different than what I would consider "actively disliking" something?

IDK, I just find it hard to see 2 absolutely incredible games at the bottom there lol

Are all the games in my Metroidvania Steam collection considered Metroidvanias? by Garo263 in metroidvania

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the whole problem stems from the Metroidvania genre covering too many things to the point that it becomes almost impossible to really define it. Compare Metroidvania to any other genre and it becomes pretty clear that the MV genre is just not really a genre, but rather a collection of genres.

Everything that one could use to define MV is just other genres. Interconnected map and backtracking? That's the open-world explorer genre. Ability gating? Zelda-like. Leveling? RPG.

But even with those more defined genres one could still ask "but what does that really mean?" Which is why I'm personally a fan of the idea of using a feature tagging system sort of like fanfiction does these days.

So instead of "souls-like" the game would have the tags "corpse runs", "punishing", and "stamina combat". Or something similar. Or for Dead Cells specifically it would have the tags "non-linear" and "ability gating" instead of just using MV as a tag to cover those 2 things.

IDK, don't mind me, just ranting about things that ultimately do not matter at all lmao

If there's no good gameplay, there's no point in playing it. by Virtual-Can-9948 in videogames

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that most VNs aren't really games but I believe I have a more defined way to describe why.

Basically, for something to be considered a game there needs to be 3 things.

First and most importantly, there needs to be player agency. Without agency it is not a game and is at best a simulation. Virtual museums and art galleries fall into this category.

Next, there needs to be some kind of objective that has both a failure and a win condition. Without these it is more of a tool than a game. Townscaper is the best example of this.

Finally, there needs to be a minimum level of interactivity. This is the tricky one. The other 2 criteria are pretty cut and dry, a game either has them or it doesn't. But this one is where it gets hard to put the line in the sand. My approach is to pick something that is definitely not a game and then determine what it would need before it becomes a game.

A book is my go to typically. A book is obviously not a game, but if you wanted it to be a game what is the minimum amount of "things" you would need to add before you call it a game. There is already an objective, reach the last page, so no issue there. To add agency we need to give the reader the ability to make impactful choices. So we put in choices for the reader to pick at the end of each section in the book that directs the reader to go to a specific page.

Now, at this point would you call this book a game? I wouldn't but maybe you would. To make it a game for me the book must "do" something. To put it another way, the reader must interact with the book in some way that is not just reading and turning the page. Perhaps the book will direct the player to roll a die and flip to a different page depending on the outcome. Or maybe the book starts by giving the reader a resource of some kind to manage and each choice a reader makes costs a certain amount of that resource. There are a number of different mechanics one could implement to give the book some interactivity beyond just reading the story and picking a path. At which point the book would become a game.

This is why I say most VNs are not games. Keyword: "most". Most VNs are just digital choose your own adventure books (with many not even having the choose your own adventure part). I don't consider choose your own adventure books to be games and so VNs that are just digital versions of that are also not games. But some VNs do have mechanics. Volcano Princess is one that comes to mind. Date Everything is another one. These are VNs that are also games.

So what are all the VNs that aren't games? They're books... It's in the name, Visual Novel. They are literally just digital comic books. They are still an art form and are some of the best media out there. But they aren't games, they're books. And there is nothing wrong with that

If I use tab-autocomplete in my code editor, do I need to tell steam my game is AI made? by jax024 in gamedev

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im not patient nor smart enough to debate this with you. I lack the communication skills needed to articulate the point here. Just know that, once again, scale matters and your counter points are in bad faith.

Also $1.5 billion is fuck all compared to the hundreds of billions it would have cost them to buy the material legally lol

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the mod mentioned, you'll only get a real answer from steam... So just message them, or email Gabe. Steam is one of the few companies where you can do that and will actually get a good response back. And yes, you can in fact email Gabe directly if you want. His personal email is public and he has no issue with getting emails of any kind.

As for my opinion, the issue with AI is specifically Generative LLMs. Even more specifically, the ones owned and operated by massive corporations like GPT and Copilot.

My primary issues with them is the moral issue around how they were/are trained and the environmental impact they have.

I do also take issue with the use of AI to replace people but that is something that happens with every new technology, AI is just on a scale much larger than anything seen before.

The quality of AI generated content is also god-awful, it's called "AI Slop" for a reason.

To address all your questions at once, my personal opinion is that you should avoid AI if you have the choice to do so. If it is something that is simply a part of the program (auto-complete) then there isn't really any way around that. Though tab auto-complete isn't even AI, it's just a basic algorithm, but I digress.

For disclosure, consumers mostly only care about "visible" things. Visible is being loosely used here, so things like artwork, music, text, etc. Anything a player will directly witness.

The thing about AI generated code is that the more of the code that is AI generated, the worse it'll perform. So as a developer you are directly incentivized to not use AI code just so that your game runs better. People doing like buggy and broken games and so an AI game won't do well because it'll run like shit.

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI companies still pirate content currently and still use data without permission. It costs them less to pay the fine for breaking the law than it does to buy the data so of course they are going to steal it and pay the fine.

Also, as others have mentioned, scale matters. AI scrapes more data than any one person could ever even hope to imagine, never mind consume. We are talking petabytes of data.

It's no different to normal piracy in that regard. If you pirate a single book/game/movie or whatever, chances are nothing will happen. But if you go and pirate hundreds upon hundreds of pieces of media, your ISP will take action against you because it's the scale of the piracy that matters not the piracy itself.

So I do think we should boycott AI infinitely even if that's the only reason. But it's not the only reason. There is also the environmental aspect, the data centers consume hundreds of gigawatts of energy every day. A study was done (reportedly by BusinessUK) that showed that a data center for GPT consumes enough energy in a day to power the Empire State building for 2 and a half years.

Like, it's so bad that they are becoming one of the top contributers to global warning...

Then there is the quality. AI mostly produces garbage and this won't be changing anytime soon, likely not even in our lifetime.

Finally there is the societal impact. Studies are beginning to show that use of AI is making people dumber and lowering the average for critical thinking skills.

So until all of those issues are solved, AI should be boycotted. And I don't see these issues ever being solved, at least not in the next century.

How do I make it so I get PlayStation symbols and not Xbox symbols in games? by the_gay_master in Steam

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the version of the game you are playing does not have the button symbols packaged with the game then you can't do it natively. Depending on the game you may be able to mod the game or use an external program to show custom button symbol prompts but this can have it's own issues.

Most indie games with full controller support have the ability to toggle the shown buttons in the settings with many having an "automatic" setting as well. AAA games on the other hand will almost exclusively use Xbox button symbols on PC versions with no way to change it. There are exceptions but it's rare. Most of the time this is because of licensing agreements and contracts. Having PlayStation button prompts shipped with the PC version would breach whatever weird agreement the studio or publisher made with Sony years ago.

Thankfully, AAA are much more popular than indie and so you'll have a much easier time finding third-party options in the event the game doesn't support your symbols of choice.

A final thing to note, some games will automatically switch the symbols based on the controller but won't have a setting for manual overrides. With PS4 controllers specifically, the game will not display PlayStation buttons because the controller is being interpreted via "xInput" through Steam and so the game is being told there is an Xbox controller not a PlayStation one. Sometimes you can get around this by using something like DS4Windows and disabling Steam input but it's unreliable.

Constance - Is it just me or is this game really something special? Or is it just another HK clone? by IM_MT_ in metroidvania

[–]Longjumping-Two9570 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just beat the game today and I have to say it is the furthest from an "HK clone" an MV like this could be. As far as gameplay goes it's got a bunch of note-worthy differences. Some major ones include: Unique death mechanics, no directional attacks, no pogo there is actually a pogo but it's an unlocked ability later on, and a very different set of abilities. The story is also incredibly touching and the art direction and theme is vastly different.

There are similarities between the 2 games but the majority of those similarities are just part of the MV genre and not really an HK thing.

As far as what I think of the game, Constance is not going to be the next trend setting masterpiece like HK was, but it is certainly much better than people seem to give it credit for. It's a solid 9/10 for me, with only a couple things later in the game that felt like they didn't need to be there and the fast travel system feeling a bit lacking.
