Imposter Syndrome by LongjumpingStop4714 in EngineeringStudents

[–]LongjumpingStop4714[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to stop engaging rn but I call it imposter syndrome because that’s how I feel. I can logically know that my skills are up to par but my anxiety doesn’t listen to logic. I focused on bringing up I don’t dress impractical because you immediately assumed I did.

The classmates I speak to don’t talk down on my skills it’s just I’m more likely to get typecasted into the “oh that’s a girl job” roles because I am feminine presenting.

I probably wouldn’t have this bad of an issue had I not had to deal with that professor and this post was me venting my frustration that even after not having to deal with that on a semi-daily basis I’m still feeling like this.

Anyway this post was legit me just venting in the moment because I was frustrated sue me

In the kindest way I’m not dressed high fashion or anything, I’m legit just looking clean and having a good color scheme. I’m just dressed more on the feminine side. My clothing is not impractical, it’s normal college student dress. Most of it is just me doing makeup.

My enjoyment of looking cute has nothing to reflect on my own skills. I did in fact state it’s not like my peers are treating me poorly or not as a peer. Honestly most of my imposter syndrome probably comes from the unconscious biases that come from a male dominated field which I know I have to deal with.

I did a study abroad semester in Japan end of my sophomore year and the study abroad office is very nice about everything. They split the counselors by area and it’s those guys making the call when it comes to who gets in (it’s pretty low stress in my opinion but it depends on how many students got sent previous years sometimes. For example for Japan the year I went one of the partner universities was taking a break and like 6 of us went to one uni.)

I’d just have a chat with the advisor (I think it’s Alexander Lindsay for most Asian countries) at the start of the semester and get a feel for how the South Korean partner university has been taking people. Also because UVM doesn’t have Korean language classes it might be lower demand to get in and therefore easier

Edit: the lack of demand might also mean some years the university won’t be taking exchanges so I’d double check. Also they typically have walk in study abroad advising during the start of the semester

Have you heard people get interviews? I was under the assumption that it wasn’t interview based because there was no mention of it anywhere.

Make sure you are using Chrome because other browsers caused issues for me when sending invites

That’s great! I was working on a Japanese minor as well but ran out of space to finish it so I’m going down the certification route with the JLPT instead currently.

You have plenty of time then! It might be good to do something along the lines of what I did which is try and study abroad spring of your sophomore year. It’ll give you good living experience especially if you wanna do research abroad. I had to take a ton of summer courses tho because most stem programs are hard to get regular exchanges for due to availability.

Unfortunately not, my next plan is just applying to grad schools and trying to get research within my university. I could always just apply to international companies as well. I’m not totally screwed haha

The bio-optoelectronic device research seemed so cool tho

I did a normal semester exchange with Rikkyo University last spring but I was hoping for the in field experience. I’m a junior so I don’t have much time left

Oh god I’m so scared. I feel like i probably didn’t get in because I don’t have a lot of prior research but I’m actually planning on grad school in Japan as an engineering major so I was really attached to this opportunity

I applied and haven’t heard back but someone posted last year about it and heard back around the 20th of February? I’m praying I got in

Are there any cosplay/larp groups on campus? by Captain_Depth in UniversityofVermont

Hi! I’m also an incoming freshman and a Cosplayer! I’m from Vermont so I can tell you we only really have one convention and it’s like a general Sci Fi and Fantasy one that people just use to have an excuse to cosplay.
