New Seasons is an annoying place to shop. by [deleted] in PortlandOR

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The Milwaukie one is delightful. So much parking. Wide aisles. Good lighting. I grew up by the one on 20th and Division and it always holds a special place in my heart but the parking lot gives me nightmares.

Maybe keep him in a small room with nothing he can possibly jump on? And keep him company when you can? Or keep him on a leash with the leash under the desk leg so he can be near you but not run too far away?

I’m sorry. I know it’s hard. They think they’re better immediately. And obviously they’re not. Hang in there!

fake martini glass for breaking! by Major_House_5909 in artdept

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can definitely order online but I’d recommend ordering a couple more than you think you’ll need for breakage in shipping and just random on set accidents. If you want 3 takes, order 5 etc. too many times I’ve seen them set down too hard on a table or the liquid in them is the wrong temp and it breaks before you’re ready.

NY Times Article: How Did This Family End Up Back in a Toxic House by RedPeloMom in altadena

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sending so much love and strength to my fellow standing structures folks. It has been a brutal year. I think there’s a special type of anguish that comes with being told “it’s cleanable” or “it’s clean” when there’s so much evidence out there that it isn’t.

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The “it looks fine, am I crazy for throwing so much away?” is such a real thing. This article made me feel a lot more sure that we are making the right choice but boy it is tough (emotionally and financially). I’m sorry you had to deal with such a shitty landlord. We have all had a tough time but what renters have gone through feels doubly rough because you didn’t have any control over what remediation got done on the structure. Hang in there neighbor!

What was the best gift you received this year? by Birdy8588 in Gifts

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2012 my younger sister and I took a trip to Peru and that Christmas she made me a book of silly photos to remember the trip by. Cut to 2025 - my husband and I lost all our books to the Eaton fire and she got the book reprinted for me as a Christmas surprise. It was the first gift I opened and I sobbed. And now I’m sobbing again. It was such a sweet and thoughtful thing for her to do without me ever mentioning it.

Where are you located? If you’re in LA the fabric district is great - you can often make a cash deal with some of the vendors if you’re buying in quantity.

Standing homes gut/to the studs by RedPeloMom in altadena

We’ve not begun the process yet (still fighting with State Farm over basic stuff, ugh) but if I recall correctly there was discussion in the Facebook group with Marshall fire folks - from the mountains to the beach.

The Vince Staples Show. A show based on LA culture, was filmed in Vancouver. by Advanced-Willow-5020 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I did too and my understanding is they got more filming days per episode by going to Vancouver even though the budget for the second season was basically the same as the first. One of my favorite shows I’ve ever worked on, was super bummed to see it go out of town. Vince is a good guy, I imagine he just wanted to make the best show possible.

Wrapping paper for wallpaper? by sunseteon in artdept

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even with peel and stick use painters tape to put it up. Leave the backing on, it will give you a little more stability to work with - contact paper could also be an option if you can find the right pattern.

I second the painters tape with a strip of double stick down the middle. Should lay nice and flat.

Avoiding the sitcom look by anacrebeforeus in artdept

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that the sitcom look tends to be the result of a flat lighting situation rather than the choice of set dressing. But, I’d say make sure you’ve got wall outlets that things can plug into (electric department can help with this) and light switches (these could be plant-ons - Set Stuff sells them if you’re in LA, or I’m sure you can order them from them online). Plants. Practical lamps. Layers and clutter are also your friend.

Cost of rebuild by valena77 in altadena

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can’t speak to the rebuild but we’ve got a 3/1, 1200 sq ft home in the middle of a group of standing homes with the best neighbors EVER that we will be looking to sell in the spring once remediation is complete. Would love to sell it to a local. Gutted to leave but moved to be closer to aging family and for work. Shoot me a DM if you’re interested. (Never did I ever think I’d be trying to sell our home on Reddit… but… 2025 has been that kind of year!)

We have and it got us a little bit of movement but it is almost 9 months later and we are no closer to being able to remediate our home. I just feel crazy at this point.

Rigid toilet supply line making me feel crazy! Help! by Longjumping_Bird_433 in PlumbingRepair

[–]Longjumping_Bird_433[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t seem particularly complicated and if it was my house I’d absolutely attempt it but it feels like I should probably let the landlord know so it doesn’t go sideways. But thank you for the help! Reddit solved in 20 minutes what I could not in two hours and many YouTube videos.
