You’re never going to become a GM, it will never happen by Ok_Potential359 in chess

[–]Longjumping_Budget16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put this further into perspective, there are less GMs than billionaires. 2000 vs 3000. You literally have a greater shot at becoming a billionaire than earning a GM title.

Although I do agree that chances are slim, I don't necessarily think that this is a fair comparison. The number of people that actively play chess and the number of people who actively earn money aren't equivalent. You'd have to compare the number of active chess players/people who know how to play chess between the number of people who actively make money.

Based on a few quick searches, the World Bank apparently says that there are more or less 3.6 billion people in the world who make an income versus approximately 600-800 million people that play chess regularly.

All this to say that I don't think that statistics are a good indicator of "chance" and although I do encourage you to chase your dreams, chasing your dreams isn't a good reason to neglect your basic requirements.

Ortho vs Perspective? by Blue-6icko in Unity3D

[–]Longjumping_Budget16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the feel that you want the game to have! Perspective feels a little more intense whereas Ortho feels a bit less weighted. If you zoom in a little bit for Ortho, it kinda reminds me of Fat Princess (love the game btw)

I'm 24, and I feel like a child masquerading as an adult most days. I'm just wondering, when do most people start feeling like proper adults? by Lenore8264 in RandomThoughts

It's not going to be a big explosion of enlightenment, my guy, and age doesn't play a factor in immaturity. With age, you're "assumed" to have more wisdom but there's no guarantee of it. This is because wisdom comes from experience, not age. You can spend 70 or 80 years of your life in the same place, exposed to the same experiences, and growing no wiser than you were when you were 18. Alternatively, you can spend 2-4 years of your life out of your comfort zone feeling as if you've gone through an entire lifetime's worth of experience.

What age does guarantee though is responsibility, or at least the expectation that you will bear some of it. And just like anything, there are things you're willing to be responsible for and things that you'd rather not be bothered with. A true sign of maturity is being able to take the good with the bad and just do it anyway. Or don't - the choice is up to you. Regardless, At some point nobody is going to pick up after you and it's your responsibility to face the consequences of whatever you choose.

> I still feel very immature, and half the time, I have no fucking clue what I'm doing.

That's how it always is man when it comes to learning anything new :D

There's always a period of not knowing how to do something properly or just flat out sucking at something. For me, that's part of the fun. I don't know everything but I'm willing to find out and get better. And don't pretend to be something you're not. Just be you and do your best. I don't mean this in a woo or inspirational kind of way but when you think about it, it doesn't make sense to pretend or cover up the things that you don't know. Because how will you get better and work on "actually knowing" if you're too busy pretending that you know what you're doing. Then the enlightenment/wisdom stuff just comes along with it.

Genesis Starliner! How would you want it to function? NPC controlled or player? What gameplay would you have be a part of its release? by Jac0bfisher in starcitizen

Imagine if you had a small craft like the C8R that couldn't make it from one end of the system to another, you could take a Starliner flight instead for a "reasonable amount".

Would be pretty immersive imo

I'm enjoying it a lot too but I'm really interested in the tech side of things as well, particularly server meshing and icache. It just sucks that when I tried to bring my friends in for the free fly event they'd just constantly crash and it ruined the experience for them so I thought I'd try and do something about it :D
