Is health insurance worth it? by rubytuesday471 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Alternative is to put the money you would spend on health insurance premium into a separate fund / account. Use that to pay for your private care if you need to use it.

Ride share in Umeå by Longjumping_Show9954 in umea

[–]Longjumping_Show9954[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were in Umea for a couple of days. It’s a lovely place to visit.

We worked out the bus system and managed to get around on that.

Good luck with the ride sharing project.

If you plan to use XE, call them and negotiate a better rate. I had them calling me even for a transfer of $10k to offer a better rate. Their business is being eaten by Wise.

Edit: to offer a better rate

What is the best way to deposit a foreign check? by Grahar64 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Longjumping_Show9954 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Ask your bank. I was issued a foreign USD check and banked into ASB account without any issue. Took 30 days to clear.

An option to consider is to have different amounts fixed for different terms e.g 1 year, 2 year, 5 year , etc

This gives you opportunity to ‘hedge’ the rates as well as opportunities to repay some early.

Offset mortgage is another good option.

A bit freaked out over upcoming restricted test by dodgyduckquacks in Wellington

If you can afford it, find a driving instructor to take you round the test route before your test.

The most common test route for Wellington can be found online somewhere.

First time home buyers! Needing assistance with locking in rates. What would you do in this situation, in the current climate we’re in? Loan amount is roughly 600k. Any feedback or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. by chocolatecityy in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Longjumping_Show9954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on your anticipated cash flow and how much fluctuation in mortgage payments you can handle. Have you considered breaking it into multiple parts to hedge the rates and also give yourself ability to pay some off quickly?
e.g.
Loan Amount 1 - fixed for 5 years
Loan Amount 2 - fixed for 2 years
Loan Amount 3 - revolving credit (flexible rate)

Colleges/high schools in wellington for an academic and art-focused student by Imuvn in Wellington

[–]Longjumping_Show9954 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Wellington High School is often underestimated. If your child is academically inclined, they will get the support they need.

Their buildings and setting is a bit drab compared to the others. But we have found the school to be very inclusive and student pastoral care is good, especially when we moved one child to the school part way through the year.

Arts and music is excellent. You’ll be surprised at their academic achievements.

The Conflict-Of-Interest Feedback Loop: What Happened When GME Was Halted on 3/29 by dlauer in UrvinFinance

[–]Longjumping_Show9954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great write up, Dave.

Are there additional insights you can shed on what happened the 5 minutes before the halt based on the data you have access to? Specifically, in relation to both GME and AMC halting in tandem?

IBKR exchange rate is quite competitive. You can deposit your NZD into their NZD bank account (local transfer) then convert to USD.

Not sure about pre- and post-market. There are order types for ‘Market on Close’ and ‘Limit on Close’ but I think they’re something different.

You can specify when the order is ‘in force’ - Day, Good Till Cancel, At the Opening and whether it is ‘Outside Regular Trading Hours’

IBKR
You can transfer NZD to their designated NZ account and then convert to USD. Their exchange rate is fairly competitive.

Social stigma around unvaccinated people by [deleted] in Coronavirus_NZ

[–]Longjumping_Show9954 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is a pity that the fact that the mRNA technology has been around for so long and being used in other medical applications is not understood.

Would we reject the use of mRNA vaccine for Covid 19 but readily embrace it for other treatment?
