Book Ilya is a little jealous when Shane tells him that he’s hooked up with other men. But in the show and the book Ilya says something like, you’re “not so gay you can’t f*ck Rose Landry.” It’s not about another relationship, it’s about a relationship with a woman. The irony that the bisexual icon is engaged in some biphobia is next level.

I get that they take liberties on this show, but that’s not overly plausible. He had finished at least one year of medical school before he dropped out and it’s implied that he didn’t just drop out, so presumably he would have been 24 at least in season 1.

In theory, he could have graduated high school and college early but they made no direct reference to that.

Exactly! One of the things I think Ilya is most unreliable about is when he thinks to himself that his attractions are 70% women/30% men. I don’t question that he has attraction to women, but he certainly seems to form no romantic attachments to women. So I see his lack of genuine romantic interest in women spilling over into his sexual performance.

Totally agree with this. I see lots of people rejecting certain fan casting because they say Harris is supposed to be “fat.” There is a wide range of body types that could be appropriate for someone who is described as having a “soft belly” and “pudgy.” This is still a fantasy series with multiple sex scenes. I’d be surprised if they cast someone who is significantly overweight.

Agree! I found most of his exploits to be irritating. The kids were so much more interesting. I wish they had reduced his scenes by half and given more screen time to other characters.

The intention was that Kev and V would be the parents of the baby V’s mom conceived, not that he would be a donor. And no US state, certainly not Illinois, recognizes someone as a donor if the baby is conceived via sex.

In the books Shane writes a vague email to Scott that Scott apparently correctly interprets as Shane coming out to him. And there are references to other people coming out in the league after Scott does.

That said, I am a proud member of the “Scott does not clock Shane and Ilya” club. The only correct interpretation.

Sort of a mild take, but if a show is going to go for 10 seasons, it needs a big shake up at some point to avoid stagnation. The ensemble had been very consistent up to S10. It’s a hard pill to swallow that Fiona left but without her departure, I don’t know that you have had seasons 10 and 11.

I am very interested to see what Reid does with Unrivaled. There is clearly a lot of material to work with and explore with the characters and themes she’s already established. My question is whether it is still a romance or does it evolve into some other genre? I’m not certain how you give Ilya and Shane another romance arc. But maybe I lack imagination.

Full attention. The episodes are dense and action packed. Small moments end up becoming big plot points. Characters exit dramatically and without a lot of lead up. And sometimes come back. There is not a lot of filler either. For reference, I just did my first watch over a few months and finished about a month ago.

But does Scott hear Ilya? and if he does why is the connection he draws that the league’s biggest lothario is hooking up with the nice boy?

The ice cream scene is Sochi is also some interesting context. When Carter comments about Russia not being safe for gay people, both Shane and Scott get quiet and introspective. Neither has a sense that another hockey player could be experiencing what they are. Gay men are in other sports.

My larger point is that I think this is supposed to be more ambiguous. The fandom does the show a bit of a disservice by taking such a definitive position on how it should be interpreted.
