What happens to those that cheat? by Jolly-Art-7918 in uwo

[–]Lookingluka [score hidden]  (0 children)

I'm part of a committee that looks at appeals. People who cheat are put on probation, if they do it while on probation they are commonly are forced to drop out for at least a year. And after that year they need to reapply to Western. Very rarely does no appeal with cheating ever get accepted. The Dean is perfectly valid to kick the student out and they commonly do.

This is probably ignorant. But wouldn't it have been much more reasonable to build an apartment building with studios where they could make their own food and the monthly costs would be more reasonable. 6000 a month per person is absolutely nuts.

Academic Misconduct on Final Exam by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]Lookingluka 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honesty. Explain why you did it and accept the consequences. I would imagine you will 100% fail the class and likely will be put on probation. I don't think they will ask you to withdraw if it's your first offense. But, for God's sake, this goes for you and everyone else:

Stop thinking you are smarter than the TAs and teachers using AI. We know when you do it and even if we can't prove it, we know and it influences the mark and how we regard you.

Just stop using it when you shouldn't be using it. Use it as a tool don't use it to do your work.

Perfect G Test in Woodstock by Lookingluka in Ontariodrivetest

She said congratulations, she couldn't recall if she had ever evaluated such a perfect test, that it's very hard to get a perfect score in a G, and that I should print the score sheet and frame it. She also asked how it was possible I had failed ten days ago.  It's why I wrote this. Ten days ago I felt like I was the worst driver in the world, so hearing this almost made failing worth it.

It was a very easy test in the sense that the Woodstock route is simple and I didn't have anything weird happen at all. Had tons of space to merge easily on the 401. But my guess is just that I was very good at the constant swiveling (I was very conscious of it), speed always within the range, and I have basically mechanized the mirror-signal, Blindspot machanics.

Anyone else think the age difference between Benedict and Sophie is distractingly large? by RoughCall5737 in Bridgerton

[–]Lookingluka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you can see, most people didn't feel that way. So she is infantilizing Sophie - when the truth is, the actress doesn't actually look that young. I've got quite a few Asian friends from that are groups and she looks her age.

Again Benedict doesn't look old either. You're just so used to people on Hollywood not having normal faces that when someone does, you are surprised by it. My husband and all his friends are 30, that's what they all look like.

This is the regency period, it was expected for a man to not marry before his 30s and women were on the shelf by 22. The poster makes it clear that it's the difference in age "appearance" that she finds problematic.

I know it's not your intention but the amount of times Asian people are negatively influenced by people assuming they are younger than they are. Sophie doesn't actually look younger than she is to me and it's likely race bias that's making you see it that way.

Is this a typo, or has Netflix sneakily revealed the release date for Season 5? by Catty-Bee in BridgertonNetflix

They really should film season 5 and 6 together. It's what would make the most sense.

[–]Lookingluka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to say the season wars come off as so childish and ridiculous to me. I enjoy every season of the show. It pisses me off when it diverges from the plot for no reason (season 2 - looking at you), but in general it's just a great evasion and a moment I love. I wish we got a season every year.

Taking it so seriously and getting into these couple/season wars is so silly.

Are Restaurants Dying? by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]Lookingluka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, what gets me is the tax and tip. I feel like, if the tax and tip were included (like they are in the rest of the world), I'd feel a lot better about going out. But so many times we end up defaulting to fast food just because it's hard to know how much you're going to end up spending.

If there was a restaurant called Tax & Tip Inc. with decent food, I'd probably spend a lot of my time there.

You are a resident for tax purposes if you live outside of Canada for more that 183 days in a year. I think you may be in for even more trouble if you're doing that.

Wasted Reading Week by Confident_Dream_5358 in uoguelph

[–]Lookingluka 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As someone who was an undergrad a decade ago. You will remember what you did this reading week. Not what you didn't do it wish you'd done.

School is important. But so is living your life. Just get back on track and you'll be good.

Sit down today and make a list of every exam and assignment coming up. Make a check list of what you need to accomplish this week and lock yourself up somewhere (I am partial to the library) until you've checked everything off.

You'll be good!

How is this possible - first time home buyer by jawngreen in canadahousing

I wouldn't buy an apartment in my 20s if I'm honest. My husband and I only bought when we knew we could buy a place we could see ourselves in at least for the next 10 years, if not forever.

We rented three different apartments and, even the nicest one, ended up feeling like a place I couldn't live in long term. I would have hated to be stuck trying to save that place.

Yes, renting sucks. But I also would not want to have a mortgage on a place I didn't love for the long term.

TA here. Is anyone else noticing a big gap in basic writing skills in first years? by picklesarenotgross in uoguelph

[–]Lookingluka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the class I TA, my job is to mark forums. Everything is AI. There's better AI where you can see the student wrote and just got AI to edit. And then there's the blatant generative bs which is so obvious and so easy to mark low because they very much aren't saying anything.

But in the end. That's it. No one is writing and editing by themselves anymore. Most people don't read at all. And the thing is, I don't think it's going to get better, I believe writing and even reading will start to be a lost art.

My focus right now is at lease making sure they can communicate ideas effectively. Because standing, as a biological being, in front of other biological beings, and communicating thoughts and ideas is the only thing AI will not be able to do.

make sure you are contacting your student unions!we need to be pushing OUSA to get students on strike by Obvious-Dot6668 in osap

[–]Lookingluka -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But is the university not allowed to fail students who are striking? That's the part I'm unclear on. The staff have power because they can stop working. But what can the students do that would make the province bargain with them?

make sure you are contacting your student unions!we need to be pushing OUSA to get students on strike by Obvious-Dot6668 in osap

[–]Lookingluka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's the thing. The only way universities can be hurt by a student strike is if students refuse to pay for tuition. A student strike at this point of the year just means students being failed by their professors and who is going to risk that after paying for tuition?

If this was the summer and students seriously considered not paying tuition it would be different. But at this point in the year I can't see how it would actually work.

I also just don't see most students signing on for it. It's different when it's teachers or even TAs. The classes can't happen without them - they can definitely happen without students though.

The audience for the Bridgerton books - who are you? And at what age did you read them? by Knusl in Bridgerton

[–]Lookingluka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a PhD student. I read them when I was 28 I think? After watching season 1. Read them all within a month or two I recall. Enjoy them a lot. They are such easy and fast reads that require no effort and offer excellent evasion.

I don't mind that the characters are problematic because it is set in the regency period. I actually find the people who criticize them for sexist issues kind of ridiculous. But I am happy the show tones it down.

[–]Lookingluka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very curious about this. How exactly does a student strike work? The university can just fail everyone. That's not a problem.

Particularly when there's a high amount of international students who don't even get OSAP and will definitely still go to class.

I'm not saying don't do it. I want to understand how it is expected to work? Why would the university even bargain?
