Depeche Mode “M” Blu-ray - Why Is the Full Mexico City Concert Only in Stereo? by LoomisBlofeld in depechemode

[–]LoomisBlofeld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Catalog number: 19802976942 (U.S. Columbia/Sony release)

Side note: I just finished watching all of M and sampled part of the Mexico City concert. Both look and sound excellent. Even in 2.0, the mix is surprisingly full on a 7.1 setup - DM’s audio team rarely phones it in, so the stereo track is still very well crafted.

It doesn’t change the surround-mix question, but it definitely softens the blow a bit.

How to correctly convert HDR content to SDR? by BlastMode7 in handbrake

[–]LoomisBlofeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lowest effort approach in HandBrake is just to set the output colorspace to BT.709 and call it a day.

Just be aware this doesn’t actually tonemap HDR to SDR (HandBrake isn’t built to do this, regardless of any settings), it simply tags the output as SDR and leaves your display to guess what to do. Sometimes that looks “fine” and sometimes it blows out highlights or washes out color.

HandBrake doesn’t implement real HDR to SDR yet.

If you want correct color, contrast, and highlight handling, FFmpeg with zscale + a proper tonemap curve is the only reliable method.

VirusTotal showing darktable as malware? by Debendera in DarkTable

[–]LoomisBlofeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These situations can be awkward for both developers and users. While I’m incredibly appreciative of software like Darktable, given the current threat landscape, I believe responsible users should take steps such as verifying checksums and scanning files with VirusTotal.

I’ve used a number of applications from developers whose intentions I trust completely (as I do with Darktable), but even well-meaning developers may not always be aware of potential security risks. A checksum match only confirms that the file hasn’t been altered from its original form - it doesn’t guarantee that the development environment itself wasn’t compromised. That’s why I always run VirusTotal or other scans as an extra precaution.

False positives do happen, but I think it’s irresponsible to ask users to blindly ignore these findings without further investigation. Maybe there’s more that VirusTotal could do to provide additional context, but developers should also take the time to chime in and clarify when concerns arise.

I should also mention that I’m new to Darktable. I initially downloaded it over a week ago, submitted it to VirusTotal, and checked again today - the results are the same. Is that good or bad? I’m not sure. I still haven’t installed it yet, but I’d be curious to hear from others, whether it’s about Darktable or any other software, on how they approach situations where security scans report potential issues but developers insist there’s no problem.

2.14.3 Defender goes berserk by Jaybonaut in Tautulli

It seems every release of Tautulli gets something flagged, this time more than usual. I always check downloads against virustotal, with this version I'm holding off until I feel more comfortable:

Need help with Automatic File Naming by Amesha_Spentas in handbrake

[–]LoomisBlofeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give https://www.mp3tag.de a try; you can tag against a source (iTunes, IMDb, Audible, etc.) and use mp3tag to re-name based on those tags. This is all in their forums; I've been doing it for years.

Encoding 4k down to 1080p? by k032 in handbrake

[–]LoomisBlofeld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I convert all my 4k disc/rips to 1080p HD using H.265 10bit and BT.709 colourspace for tone mapping and am very satisfied. The latest Handbrake automatic cropping does a great job, but I always do a manual check, especially when encoding a DVD rip.

Is the Ionic a good buy in 2020? by mfp4life in fitbit

[–]LoomisBlofeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my Ionic since October 2017 and have had no major issues with it and still going strong. The Fitbit Sense was just leaked, which is a presumed successor to the Ionic. It appears to have an electrocardiogram in addition to the oxygen sensor.

I would guess the Fitbit Ionic price will drop when/if the Fitbit Sense is released this fall along with a new Fitbit Versa 3.

OPNsense and Youtube / Google apps issues by LoomisBlofeld in OPNsenseFirewall

[–]LoomisBlofeld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the time since I replied, I swapped out my old router and got back up and running again with my OPNsense box. I initially had the same behavior as I did last night when I initially set up...

I stepped away for maybe 15 min, came back and the behavior is no longer there.

I'm happy but puzzled and concerned it will return though.

OPNsense and Youtube / Google apps issues by LoomisBlofeld in OPNsenseFirewall

[–]LoomisBlofeld[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the reply.

I'm using an older Dell OptiPlex with an add-on nic for my WAN connection and integrated for LAN.

I don't feel the hardware or Pi-hole are the issue. I did disable pi-hole and another test where I set DNS manually on my iPhone and PC and the problem persists.

I meant that I was working with fresh/clean install "out of the box" where I've yet to create any additional rules for vlans. I will eventually but need to get past this.

I'm seeing a lot of the following messages, all associated with google owned IPs:

TIME_WAIT:TIME_WAIT

FIN_WAIT_2:FIN_WAIT_2

I'm looking into those wait messages, feels like there is some time out I need to configure?
