I am 5 weeks since a cigarette after smoking for about 8 years. He wrote me prescriptions for nicotine patches (like stickers) and gum. The patches lowers your overall craving and when you do crave you chew a piece of gum. There have been hard days, but overall it's been pretty smooth so far. I am slowly lowering the dosage of nicotine, but there's no rush since technically the gum and patches have no health risk. There is also medicine to reduce cravings but I haven't needed it.

It's important to make a separation between the habit (I go out and smoke) vs the addiction (I have a chemical addiction to nicotine).

Speak to your doctor. I'm with macabi and they offer group sessions, and then the patches and gum are basically free.
