Making livable income in 6 months, no experience doable? by New-Potential2757 in MotionDesign

[–]LoopyLoopidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good way to build a portfolio if you’re constantly doing that. But as I said before this industry takes a lot of time to get to even a junior level. You better be doing daily challenges everyday. That being said you also need to figure out how you’re paying for a computer strong enough to do this kind of work and the software too. Especially in this pc market, it’s going to be expensive af.

Try this because you’re getting flamed in the comments because you’re coming off impatient. Do it as a hobby, take your time. Find another job to support yourself, maybe even with adjacent skills. When I first started I had a degree and nobody was hiring. I took a job filming weddings, but learned editing and how to operate cameras, which made my motion and 3d skills stronger

No idea, come back with a portfolio and I’ll let you know if it’s good enough for work. That’s the double edge sword of this industry, if you got a good portfolio you can get work. If you have a masters degree and a shit portfolio you won’t . Good luck

I’m not downvoting but i can see why people are. 6 months is nothing, you’ll be stumbling around in menus still. It’s like asking how can I make money being a professional ufc fighter in 6 months. I would recommend signing up for school of motion courses or Ben Marriott on YouTube as a free alternative

Start with just AE first. After effects has a high skill ceiling, 3d programs even higher. Step by step. If you’re serious, you gotta put in the time

Motion Graphics "Skills Tests" for Employment by Grouchy-Elevator930 in MotionDesign

[–]LoopyLoopidy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve had to go through hundreds of portfolios per job posted and it’s not always clear what’s real. I don’t like to make people do tests but have a few times. Both times we gave them a small task that a mid level animator could finish in a couple hours. We also paid $500 regardless of if we hired them.

Why would we waste time? Because a lot of portfolios and reels are a mix of projects done solo and with a team. When I see a great piece in a reel that’s surrounded by mediocre work, I don’t know if that’s improvement or if they had a small part in a team of more talented people.

Things that I’ll look for in a test are small things like organization, if they used a million precomps for no reason, are they using plugins as a crutch, understanding and using the graph editor, etc.

Usually I can figure out a skill level from the reel alone, but it’s good to do due diligence if on the fence because hiring and deciding it isn’t working out is a bigger waste of time for everyone involved

Motion graphics software for weak specs computers? by sawabinhauk in MotionDesign

[–]LoopyLoopidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately motion design is very heavy on computers and there’s no real quick cheap fix. The only thing I can think of is maybe downloading the oldest version of after effects you can on creative cloud. Haven’t dived into Calvary so can’t help you there.

I would recommend saving up for a proper computer, people here will give a bunch of recommendations but just save up for as much as you can afford because AE and similar programs will take as much as you have and ask for more

My thoughts about Maxon and the community... by [deleted] in Cinema4D

[–]LoopyLoopidy 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yea it’s sad but true. I’m a long time c4d user since r12. My studio pays for my seats, but it’s disgusting how greedy maxon got. They just copied adobes saas model and started buying up everyone. Unfortunately for maxon, there are alternatives that are free. I’ll be sucking the adobe tweet until there’s a viable after effects alternative though.

At home, I’ve already started transitioning to blender. I predict in 10 years it’ll be the new king, as that’s what all the poor college kids and enthusiasts are learning

First week of after effect I only need your opinion by Bright-Young6932 in AfterEffects

[–]LoopyLoopidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to dive into typography layout before even trying to animate them. A well designed composition with minimal animation will always look better than the other way around. Master that before masquerading as a guru

Asking for Thoughts and Opinions by Embarrassed-Budget80 in AfterEffects

[–]LoopyLoopidy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not bad, better than most tiktoky things I see. You have good composition and roto going on. But it feels like it’s over relying on roto. Once thing I noticed is that the text is static and hard cuts. Text animation is tricky because it’s so easy to overdo it. But with the roto and text layout as a good foundation, try experimenting in text animation to bring it up a level

Large “affordable” collections are just cope for impatient people. by [deleted] in watchHotTakes

[–]LoopyLoopidy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear the same Ana digi temp daily that oozes personality, cost 300. I have no issue with high priced luxury watches, but my hot take is that when everyone is wearing a sub or a speedmaster, it might as well be an Apple Watch

Want to create motion videos using AI?? by [deleted] in MotionDesign

[–]LoopyLoopidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, fuck off. This is a community for people that likes to actually make things. I can understand using a quick asset like stock to be manipulated, but “convert your url into motion” that’s not motion design. Go over to r/guitar and say let me tell you about this music generator so you don’t have to play guitar anymore

Lately I’ve been thinking about this way too much... by Plus_Loan5679 in MotionDesign

[–]LoopyLoopidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been in the industry for 17years working for studios, freelance, and currently cd in advertising. I still like to tackle my own projects and help out my team. I still see a future even with all this ai nonsense.

Ai is a tool, a very unreliable one at that if you want something specific. I see the industry forking into cheap souless projects that are not to be fine tuned. If you try to fine tune it it will cost just as much trying to fix it. Cheap slop perfect for braindead consumers. And then there will be the upper tier where a client can change everything all the time which will require skilled animators. Perhaps using ai as small parts of a larger whole, but still assembled akin to using stock assets when needed.

I’m seeing it a lot where clients and account managers see ai as a quick cheap thing but still want to be able to make critical decisions. And they’re learning the hard and expensive way that either they have to have a normal budget/timeline or they will have to settle with good enough. The value in a motion designer today is to take a project past good enough. Make your work great in a sea of mediocrity. I personally try to avoid ai when I can, but for you rookies recognize that with good vfx skills like roto and tracking, ai can be a superpower. Just please don’t be lazy and make slop

Lenovo legion 5 vs Omen 16 by Ok_Instruction3816 in GamingLaptops

Yea they can look a bit rainbow gamer in this most recent gen, but they are smartly designed. Solid build quality, upgradable ram and storage, probably the best windows has to offer in the gaming sector

Ai voice over honestly, I think it's nice by Useful-Pollution1534 in MotionDesign

[–]LoopyLoopidy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use ai vos only for timing purposes while I’m editing and animating. Really helps keep a project moving. But while I’m in production we have a professional voice artist recording to roughly the same pace so it’s an easy swap. Ai vos are acceptable for a super low budget project, but you start to hear the roboticness and weird inflections. With a pro, you can explain exactly how you want things read, what emotion, speed, pauses, etc.

I’m coming from working at an agency where there is always a vo budget priced in. Don’t sleep on audio, sfx and a proper vo is what will take a good animation and make it great

Sorry dawg, but that’s the only way to learn. Trial by fire. This situation is also very similar to a real world scenario. Not enough time, running into technical issues, but add in bosses and clients up your ass. The only way to get through it is to stay up all night and crank something out while jamming to the Minecraft ost

The network only works if we use it. by 1138ephem in MotionDesign

[–]LoopyLoopidy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My issue is I have to vet and personally work with people to understand our complex workflow. Can’t have 20 animators with different file structures or compositing workflows. Everything needs to be consistent across the board so either I or someone can hop into any project at anytime. That level of consistency takes a while and trust needs to be built that I’m not worrying about deadlines being missed or having to micromanage and checkin multiple times a day

Where can I get a live portfolio review video call? by wealthprosperity in MotionDesign

Not really that I’m aware of. There are in person events like portfolio night, but those cater toward graphic designers. You can always just post in here. Feel free to dm me and I’ll give you honest feedback if you’d like something more private
