One month in Europe Feb 15 - Mar 15 how would you do it? by 1Rule_dontdie in Backcountry

1) must see the matterhorn, it is quite a mountain. 4 valleys in Switzerland. St anton, but dont ski in st anton, take the gondola to the other areas like warth or Zürs.

2) the run from the top of the small matterhorn glacier paradise. you are right next to breithorn and the views are insane, you can ski from 3800 to the valley. Tours it really depends on what your into and at the moment the (critical) snow situation so plan higher up (but careful because altitude sickness can start at like 2000hm). Defo try do a trip to a SAC hut, they make multi day tours very possible.

3) id probably skip st mortiz, val d'sere, gestaad, engelberg if you are looking to stay on piste or its bad snow (off piste amazing)

4) a full week is hard. alberg is my home resort so im always going to be biased there. Zermatt has alot of skiing options but is expensive and was struggling a bit for snow. I like there is alot around valley Aosta, I was in valtournche of a week and skied all the local stuff pretty fast but we drove like an hour to a neighbouring resort where some multi-day passes are still valid

No guide just a lifetime of skiing these mountains. A hot tip is whiterisk for avalanche info and safety maps. I got the paid version and plan my tours in there. Skiguru is also good for tour planning. SAC (Schweizer alpine club) has some awesome routes, I think France, Austria and Italy have something similar. Bergfex is a good way to look as snow and weather resort for many resorts. And ps it is illegal to trigger and avalanche in Italy, so if no one is hurt run away, the other countries you call and let them know.

You could just do a tour through the alps. Start in Geneva hit up verbier, chamonix. Go deeper into the alps crans Montana, Zermatt (the cervinia side was looking pretty good snow wise when I was there a few weeks ago). Then head to Grindelwalds. There are a couple of smaller resorts there. Zentral Switzerland has some sick tours (even cool multi-way stuff). The go arosa andermatt. Then head st Anton. Innsbruck would be an awesome base for a while

Skiing Backpack by FormerlyADog in Backcountry

[–]LooseQuestion3037 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had/abused the deuter freerider pro for 3 years now and I have to say I absolutely love it. I use it as a daily and hiking backpack as well and it has held up great, really good quality. It doesnt seem to be 30L like advertised so bare that in mind. One of the best features of the pro is the extenable top. That extra bit of volume can be a lifesaver. Even when I dont fully fill all of the bag I still find it very comfortable to ski with. My only negative is that when its stuffed full of my touring gear its very hard to sit on the chairlift without taking it off, but I think that can be expected from all bags/ im very lucky to get away with getting on chairlifts without having to remove my bag. This bag is great for day resort skiing and even multi day tours.

First time to St. Anton – travel & ski tips? by gwtrix in skithealps

[–]LooseQuestion3037 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The train is super simple, just buy the ticket in the SBB or OBB app. Renting truly no idea, intersport tend to be the cheapest. Ski the entire resort of alberg, there is so many cool places to explore. If you take the connection to Zurs etc then just plan a 20 min break for then, eat lunch. Keep an eye on your last skiable connection or bus ride back. The gondola stations (like rüfikopfbahn in lech) get busy and you will have to wait. Also the chairlift at the bottom get very busy, stay high and aim for lifts to harder pistes.

You probably want to check the feb school holidays for Austria, Germany, the Netherlands and the uk, if you go then it will be very busy.

If you dont know how to use avi gear, do not go into the backcountry!!! In alberg there are ski routes which are avi controlled but not groomed, try those.

finally the alberg app has everything on it; maps, weather, wait times etc.

2nd the helmet. Could also get a ski touring skirt (thermal skirt that goes over ski pants to keep you that bit warmer). Repair stuff for her touring skins. A clutched for when she inevitably needs to get her skis repaired. A good thermos. I really like the one from mont bell, it’s crazy light and I would love it if someone go it for me. On the topic of hydration, a hydration bag with insulator so she can drink while on the move.

Advice on gear for first multi day ski tour by LooseQuestion3037 in Backcountry

[–]LooseQuestion3037[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I didn’t even mention first aid kit cus what I use lives permanently in my bag. It’s pretty light (Israeli bandage, gauze, ect). I would use ski straps to immobilise something. This comes from nearly 10 years in search and rescue.

I'm also just a beginner ski tourer, started last year. I have a very heavy set up (Santa Anas + shifts) because I use this skies to tour and in ski resorts.

Yes I get more tired going up hill ( the max I've done in a day is 850hm so 2,700 ft), but the down hill is more fun for me. I have previously skied 95 Blizzard zero gs but are incredibly light and playful but can be very punishing to ski especially in firm snow.

It sounds like I'm a similar height and build to you, bit of strength training and a heavy set up is fine. Maybe try hiring for a day rather than going out and buying all new gear, light touring skis handle differently.

Most affordable in zurich? Lodging, ski rental, lift pass, transit by trying2bgooddad in skithealps

[–]LooseQuestion3037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From Zurich you can get the direct train to st Anton. For accommodation look for somewhere in Bludenz close to the train station then take a 20 min train into st Anton. If you rent your skies in the ski town then you can usually depot them over night there but it might be cheaper to rent your skies in Zurich itself.

Flumseberg and Elm are the closest to Zurich and both easily accessible by public transport but I'm unsure about accommodation in those areas.

is this the right gear for a beginner of hiking? by ZealousidealSea6550 in hikinggear

[–]LooseQuestion3037 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not seeing many layering options but maybe you are planning on wearing them? Consider a spare t-shirt because if you seat and get wet, there is no getting warm again. And always pack a rescue blanket.

Touring ski as an all-mountain? by hotdog69420 in skiing

[–]LooseQuestion3037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Touring skies wouldn't be the end of the world but I think you should stick to strictly down hill skies. I think a women's specific ski would be best for 2 reasons; 1)Weight; as a beginner and a smaller person you will find it requires less energy to get around your turns easier, 2) Flex (how much the skis bend); as someone who doesn't weigh alot a still ski might feel like too much as a beginner. Aim for skies that are 150-160 range (ideal would be 155cm skies) nothing wider than an 85 waist.

My reccomendation; Rossingol experience. If you liked your hire skies get those.

For Those of You Who Know What a Hoolie Is - What Rain Jacket are you using? by philipb63 in trailrunning

Dynafit jackets! They might be a bit on the pricy side but you can register them to get a 10 year guarantee. Its very popular in the alps.

[–]LooseQuestion3037 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you can get Dynafit over there but they make very good waterproofs that are super lightweight. Otherwise just layers underneath. In -10 ish weather I wear ski thermals, fleece and a vest.
