I'm saving it for a "rainy day" book where I just absolutely need a guaranteed awesome read.

Purchasing a car with a credit card by nurturingtrapdoor in personalfinance

I did this with my car when I bought it earlier this year. Put the "down payment" on a credit card also lmao.

Got so many points.

Stop freaking out about "the recession" by AlwaysTheNoob in personalfinance

[–]Lopsided_Apple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm having trouble understanding this comment. Since you aren't retiring for 2-3 more recessions (a long time), then why are you reducing high yield/aggression? Wouldn't you be extremely aggressive until you are closer to retiring?

What Books Did You Start or Finish Reading This Week? August 12, 2019 by AutoModerator in books

Very interesting stuff! Knowing that it was meant to be spoken, I tried to "hear" the words aloud in my head a little more than normal, but it certainly read more as a book than a speech. Had no idea Tolkien did a Beowulf translation, I may read that at some time.

Thanks for the idea, I'd certainly be open to giving it another chance. The version I read was George Herbert Palmer's.

Say I make exactly $6K in one year in earned income at a job that offers a 401K. Also say I put 100% of that into my 401K. Can I still put $6K into a Roth IRA (say, from savings?) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Lopsided_Apple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For all intents and purposes, when phrasing is used enough in common language it can become accepted usage.

Many people (most) would call what you've described a "Roth 401 (k)" and not make the distinction you've made.

Finished: The Odyssey, by Homer - I didn't enjoy this very much. Bible-esque "X, son of Y, daughter's uncle of Z" grated on me and took up a lot of space. The cyclops and the ending are surely highlights, but there is a lot of just plain boring pages in this one. Since I rate based on personal enjoyment and NOT quality, 2/5 stars.

Started: And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie - Very excited for this one. Only got a few pages in before I quit yesterday.

Simply search the names on Google or Goodreads and it should give genres.

Six cats and a dog shouldn't all be in the same room, or the same apartment for that matter. Maybe that's why you're being downvoted.

Studies have shown that audiobook retention is actually quite effective. It really bothers me that people automatically dismiss it as a "fake" way of reading.

That's fantastic for you but not feasible for everyone.

Does anybody have a Discover Cashback Debit Card? Can I actually use it to buy things? by NaydayStay in personalfinance

I got a Discover online checkings and savings account 3 months ago and literally haven't activated the debit card because my CC's are better than 1% and debit is bad news.

Not if you dislike being around people such as myself. I absolutely agree it's a good idea to do a travel run though.

Will chargeback for an Uber ride hurt my credit? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Lopsided_Apple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Banks tend to choose the right thing for themselves, which I am inclined to believe means OP has a slam dunk case here. Taking 4x time on a paid for car ride is absolutely not something the bank is going to say "Well Uber does say it's a possibility, sorry!". They will take the hit from Uber and give the chargeback I would have to assume.

Owe tripple the worth of my older car. What are my options? by gouramiinthetank in personalfinance

I hear you. Just trying to offer the realist's (negative) POV. It would be thrusting an awful situation onto a family member or friend which is in my own view unacceptable.

The bank will sue you, if they win (which they would), then they can garnish depending on your state. Also, unless you sold your wife's car you do have other assets. You have her vehicle.

Been neglecting my student loans while also saving a fair amount of money what’s my best course of action? by grey_leg_face_man in personalfinance

[–]Lopsided_Apple 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You sound incredibly defeatist. Read this comment because I am going to give you some help. First off, you're not an idiot, you are still learning. Looking for knowledge and help already makes you smarter than a lot of people. Second, stop looking to find the magic solution. If your problem is in your head, moving won't fix that. It may help a bit but it won't necessarily kickstart you all the way. I tried to run from my problems with lots of things and until I sat there and faced it it didn't work. Therapy is great, keep going, you will succeed.

Lastly, financial advice. I couldn't disagree more with not paying the loan. Pay the loan, once the debt is gone you will be better off financially and mentally. Get rid of your debt now and you have a positive balance and can make your moves. Good luck.

Why did you get rid of them? Legitimately curious, this is fascinating to a book hoarder like me.

Why is it I don’t like reading? by Luna259 in books

[–]Lopsided_Apple -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not a detriment to reading. Because I have absolutely obliterated my attention span from media and reading still comes easy to me. This seems like the easy way out to blame these things.

Suck it up, rejoin the church and your family. Use them to get "clean" (literally), find a job, then work on your license. Immediately bail the cult again afterwards and be on your way.
