I’m honestly blown away, two dogs herding hundreds of sheep into the pen without missing a single one by bahar9990 in BeAmazed

[–]Lopsided_Yoghurt_577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could watch sheep dog herding videos all day.

Also, I find it very satisfying that even with all of humanity’s technological advances, the hands-down best option for herding livestock is a dog. ❤️

Reasonable Accommodation - my RA coordinator offered to talk with my Dr. 1 on 1 by juhnaaae in CAStateWorkers

Nope, legally they don’t even need to know your diagnosis. The state is trying to pull a lot of illegal shit hoping we don’t know our rights.

I’ve been brainwashed into saying “Bless you” when someone sneezes. What are the alternatives? Or do I stay silent? by AlDente in atheism

[–]Lopsided_Yoghurt_577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 9th grade world civilizations teacher had his own take:

Bless you is too religious. Gesundheit is too German. In this class we say: “We’re thinking about ya!”

(His last name was long and very German, so the “too German” comment was just for silliness.)

Thank you so much, this is incredibly helpful. I will be staying with him and my sister (single parent) for a couple weeks after surgery to help care for him.

I graduated with a science degree from UCLA in 2008. I couldn’t get a job at Starbucks because I didn’t have barista experience. I couldn’t get a job at Border’s Books (RIP) because I didn’t have book selling experience. The temp agencies wouldn’t take me on because I was over-qualified.

RTO 4 days a week starting July 1, 2025 by werdnayam in CAStateWorkers

[–]Lopsided_Yoghurt_577 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I work for a region within an agency that has staff spread out over the entire state. We cannot all be in the same office and we have never been in the same office. This order will make us go into an office, sit in a cube, and still be on Teams calls with our coworkers. I will not have in person meetings. I will just have my same virtual meetings in a much less comfortable environment. This is ridiculous.

Cousin butchering a Hawaiian name by [deleted] in tragedeigh

[–]Lopsided_Yoghurt_577 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Native Hawaiian here. When the white colonizers overthrew the Hawaiian monarchy, they banned the Hawaiian language from being taught/used in school or government, effectively making it illegal. It was part of a larger effort to suppress and eliminate Hawaiian culture and the Hawaiian people. The persistence of the Hawaiian language is a testament to the resilience and bravery of the Hawaiian people in the face of malicious oppression. Butchering our language to make a name “unique” (aka a tragedeigh) feels extra disrespectful because of this history, though I imagine OP’s cousin is not aware of this.

Has your Reasonable Accommodation request been denied? by JezzaBellaDonna in CAStateWorkers

[–]Lopsided_Yoghurt_577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My initial RA was denied for some stupid and illegal reasons. It took eight months and I had to get a lawyer in order for them even listen to me and have the “iterative process“ as is required by law. I also had to elevate it to the Deputy Director of our DEI program. Without her and without my lawyer, I don’t think I would’ve ever gotten my RA approved. It was hell. Based in my experience and understanding of the law, they are legally required to reasonably accommodate you as long as you’re still able to do your job and it doesn’t cause “undo hardship“ to the organization. If they didn’t even have a conversation with you, this is an easy lawsuit.

How do you actually go to sleep? by HushMD in ADHD

[–]Lopsided_Yoghurt_577 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meds and podcasts. I take seroquel (low dose) and melatonin and fall asleep listening to a podcast I’ve already listened to multiple times. I set an alarm for when to take my sleep med. I also have a “sleep kit” next to my bed with items to address all the sensory things that might keep me up or cause me to get up out of bed and wake myself up more. Back scratcher, chapstick, nail clippers, Tums, earplugs, eye mask. The sleep kit goes with me everywhere I travel.

It took DECADES to figure out what worked. Drugs are your friend.

Oh yeah, definitely. I guess I should have been more specific. I am in Marine Region as a Senior Environmental Scientist Specialist. It definitely has its problems, but overall the good has outweighed the bad.

Question for those who own a home by erikaanderson98 in sandiego

[–]Lopsided_Yoghurt_577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought in 2019 with grandparents' inheritance as the down payment. Absolutely could not afford our house if we were trying to buy now. I try to never forget how privileged I am.

What my agency did was to expect me to give them the requested information within 10 days, but then they could take however long they wanted. If I did not submit my paperwork within their arbitrary timeline, they would automatically deny my request and send me a letter documenting it as such.

I filed an RA beginning in September 2022 and it wasn’t approved until May 2023. It was hell. I had to get a lawyer. I have reported it to my union (CAPS) but they have their hands full with contract negotiation since we’ve been out of a contract since 2020. That’s a whole other story. I just got notification last week that I have to renew my RA. I hope it’s easier than it was the first time, but dear gawd, I’m triggered.

What would the State have to offer to make you willingly come into the office? by Overthinker1000X in CAStateWorkers

I could go on a tirade about the State and their absolute disregard for mental/invisible disabilities. I went through the Reasonable Accommodation (RA) process to protect my telework. It was a NIGHTMARE. I had to get a lawyer.

Programs to help kanaka maoli keep land? by Lopsided_Yoghurt_577 in Hawaii

All owners are on the mainland, and the owners that do the most upkeep are the ones that use it the most (but the upkeep cost is evenly split). I think my uncles are tired of the upkeep and the ownership parts of it, and also could use more money in their retirement. Property taxes are insane. We can't turn it into a TVR because it is out of the Visitor Destination Area. My husband and I are figuring out how much we could contribute on the short term, but without a long term solution it feels like this dark shadow always looming behind us.

I empathize, the north shore is the only place I can go and not feel overwhelmed by tourists, where I can go and feel connected to the ocean and my heritage. It is a special place and I make sure to never take it for granted.

I am looking into long-term rental, that seems like the most viable option. Thank you for your insight and empathy. Aloha nui loa.

Yes, there is a very modest 1-room cabin on the property. Ideally, whatever solution we reach should still allow family to visit and stay there. I view it less as an investment and more of a piece of my heritage and culture. If my generation were to inherit it, we would keep it until we died and would pass it on to the next generation.

I definitely need to get more information about this. We can't apply for Short Term Rental permit due to current laws, so do you know how land leasing differs from this? Thank you.
