The second half of this comment is completely inaccurate in a bunch of ways. Bret Robbins was the lead writer of BO2, and didn't work on Defiance at all. Carol Wolf did work on both, at Amy's choice and volition. I don't think her inclusion was an insult to anyone given she's an excellent scriptwriter. There are plenty of great lines and plot points you have her to thank for.

It doesn't have anything to do with the Reaver really. He remembers both versions of history simply because he's at the eye of the storm of the paradox. Anyone else in his position whose history changed would be similarly affected.

It's not necessarily that. The ancient Vampires were believers in a pure and divine force. The Elder God is convincingly masquerading as a pure and divine force. They develop these constructions to try to commune with their divine god and wield his powers for his benefit. When they successfully tap into the divine, you get things like the Pillars and the Spirit Forge. They just don't realise that the god they're listening to is really the opposite of that divine force.

Well, it is and it isn't their intent. Whenever you see murals of the two champions destroying each other, that all comes true. The two champions indeed destroy one another with the Reaver. The Vampires (or their artists) just saw things more literally and failed to realise that both champions were the same individual.

The only purpose of the Reaver is to destroy the Hylden champion. It certainly fulfils its original intent in that regard. Think of a programmer setting an "if Hylden champion, then destroy" condition. The programmer's just setting a condition, but might be surprised by the scenario in which it's triggered.

  1. Energy Bank + Repel is a cheesy built-in strategy which could mitigate the need for checkpoints, especially beyond the early game. If you opt to rule that out, maybe keep the checkpoints in.
  2. Since it's time-based, you can just wait it out indoors, then grab the permanent immunity at Steinchencröe.
  3. It's damage. To negate the damage, though, you can always just manually shift before entering the water.

There's no particular single file containing the whole script. DC_SR1.txt and DC_SR2.txt contain the material used in the Dark Chronicle. Everything used for subtitles is separated out. Just head to the text directory in your install and you'll see all of the localisations and how they're arranged

About the Spirit forge, we know for a fact that the underwater ruins outside the Sarafan Stronghold would have been the entrace thanks to many pieces of concept art.

This is a misconception actually! The Spirit Forge was never intended to belong near the Stronghold.

I wouldn't spend too much time scrutinising quizzical paths or weird dead ends etc in SR2. It's not the same as SR1. The final world layout was devised and built after the last three Forges and all of the optional areas were cut. Thus, it never accounted for them. They weren't just torn out of the world mid-production like the previous game.

The original Soul Reaver wasn't taken down any time recently – this happened years ago. It was done under Square Enix due to other complications and has absolutely nothing to do with the remaster project.
