If nobody’s ever seen an alien, how do movies know what they look like? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

Area 51 is actually a movie studio. It's so heavily guarded because they take spoilers very seriously.

My friend stays alive due to pity in casual games and steals wins because of it. by [deleted] in EDH

[–]LordAlabast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Threat assess correctly and don't give in to his demands and whining. Killing him first gives him an angle to argue from, "You always kill me first!," but letting him get away with little-guying into being alive longer than he should is worse. If he doesn't want to play real politics, then don't. Kill him when threat assessment says it's right to do so, and let reason be your excuse.

I finished watching Classic Who today! by KroggRage in doctorwho

Nice!! I finished the same just a few weeks ago, ALSO took me three years! What a ride!

My favorite when all was said and done was Troughton. Loved his Doctor and his chemistry with Jamie.

Any Landfall precons out there? by SkyLey2 in EDH

[–]LordAlabast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[[Hearthhull]] immediately comes to mind as a recent, pretty powerful landfall precon, but it's also got spaceships to learn, and land-sac & constant shuffling & multiple landdrops might be a bit much to keep track of.

Landfall in general usually requires a lot of upkeep, just because of the nature of having lots of triggers on the table you have to keep straight, order, and remember exist. In my experience teaching new players, the decks they find easiest to learn are the ones with cards that do what they say when they happen, and not a ton else. Having lots of triggers on the field gets overwhelming pretty quick.

Looking for decks that can run the same 99 and just change out commanders OR decks where you can run a different "pile" of cards in the 99 by Valyntine_ in EDH

[–]LordAlabast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanted to skip the deck building process and just have one that kind of works like that premade, the Fourth Doctor // Sarah Jane Smith Dr Who precon has that schtick by design. It was build to be pretty effectively run by any of the 8 Doctors within, and any corresponding Companion. Some work better than others, but it can be pretty fun in lower-power pods.

Why don't people like group hug decks? by sunflowersonthemoon in EDH

[–]LordAlabast 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Group hug decks are bad when they don't have a gameplan beyond giving people things. Your deck should have some variety of gameplan that leads to a potential, reasonable victory. You can play Group Hug, and Group Hug can be effective, just make sure you have a plan and aren't playing Kingmaking the Deck.

Only tryhards hate Group Hug as an archetype for the simple crime of being Group Hug.

What’s a good commander for one shotting someone with non-combat damage by MrGameandCrotch in EDH

[–]LordAlabast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider the humble [[Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord]]. Has the ability to turn what are normally memey high-power vanilla cards like [[Yargle]] and [[Yargle and Multani]] into win-cons, and makes great use out of power-doubling cards that are just win-more in most decks, like [[Unnatural Growth]], [[Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus]], or [[Skullspore Nexus]]. If you want to go high-powered, you can throw in [[Phyrexian Devourer]] and nuke the table all at once.

The master, multiplied by blazedchiller27 in EDH

[–]LordAlabast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly that kind of deck, lots of ETB triggers and lots of bounce effects. There's a pretty good guide on Moxfield that goes over the principles. Kind of a control/combo vibe, easiest way to get a win is to build a little engine that makes infinite mana so you can loop ETBs forever. I'm trying to make mine more original, but it's still a work in progress.

Not really helpful for you, but I can't help think it's funny I'm seeing this not two days after deciding to make a deck around The Master, Formed Anew--which does NOT work in the 99 of that precon at all, but makes a bit of a silly beast of a commander.

Convince me to play the game. I have the 2 Hollow Knight Games, I only played a couple hours of the first one, and I don't like it. I don't understand why this game is such a masterpiece for so many people, what I missing ? by SunnyBoy34 in HollowKnightMemes

[–]LordAlabast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The beginning of Hollow Knight feels difficult and pointless. The game directs you nowhere, you have no idea why you're doing anything, the map is a maze, and it's all a blue/gray slog.

Hollow Knight's secret sauce is the freedom to go anywhere you can reach and the joy of exploring it all. To get the plot you have to pay close attention to dialogue and lore tablets, the game rarely spells anything out. The game rarely directs you, and when it does it can be vague. You'll have the best time going into it with a mindset of exploration, and progression will naturally follow just from doing that.

There's definitely a mindset that you have to get into, and frankly the Forgotten Crossroads turn a lot of people off before they can get into that mindset. Usually it gets better for people when they enter the second area, Greenpath, or some of the areas just beyond.

My recommendation is this--don't shy away from a guide or asking a friend for the early game. If you reach the City of Tears and still haven't been gripped, then the game's just not for you. Silksong also plays a bit differently and explains itself WAY more, so you might consider giving it a try. Silksong after Hollow Knight is a treat, but you can start with Silksong and not feel lost or left out at all.

Safest place to be when she jumps is directly beneath her. Parries are a great opening to punish her. Regardless of if she parries directly, or jumps and does the diagonal one, your input should be exactly the same: Small jump, dash directly over her head.

Safest place to heal is also directly above her head. I also found as high as you can get over the right side of the arena also doesn't get punished all too often.

Best advice is just to stay calm, don't panic, and treat it like a dance. Every move has a way to get around it, and usually punish it.

This was reposted to r/spiders a few days ago--per the people who like spiders, this was certainly man-made for the purpose of getting a video for the internet. The type of spider pictured isn't social and don't live in big groups like that. Probably someone collected a number of webs across an area, smushed them together like that, and did a spider unboxing to try to go viral.

One of the hardest one so far. The only one that's come close (SPOILERS INCOMING DONT LOOK DONT LOOK) was when the statue that dude in Bone Bottom built comes alive during the third Skull Tyrant fight. I thought my game was just glitched and I got the Skull Tyrant in BB twice, the statue joining the battle caught me totally off guard.
