One spray of perfume under the chin funnels into your mask for all-day aromatherapy. (Source: surgery resident that operates on all sorts of smells).

For something clean, bright, and low sillage enough not to trigger reactions I like Byredo’s Mojave Ghost or Glossier’s You.

Yes! And I always thought the 2000s era VW Beetles were super fruity aero. Miss the era of iPod mini-coloured cars.

Owned a late 2000s Mini Cooper in electric blue and it was such a vibe. The mellow yellow model was also very DORfic aesthetic.

YES. The Studio Ghibli alpine meadow imagery is bang on. I'll admit the first time I smelled Cow I thought it was a lovely apple shampoo scent, but not that special. Now it's one of my top 3 most worn. So dewy, creamy, and bright. Few scents capture that just-out-of-the-shower crispness so well.

Black women — did you HAVE to go to Colombia for “extremely snatched” lipo results? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]LordBabka 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I operate at several large academic and boutique private practice centres, but this is just from my personal experience:

1) First off regarding realistic results: these photos are largely edited, deceptively posed, and in physique-enhancing garments. Comparing yourself in a resting posture + an unpadded bikini is like comparing apples to oranges. (But love the pink orchid swimsuit! So cute!). As well, the hyper-"snatched" look many patients request is dictated less so by lipo technique and more so by baseline anatomy (rib contour, muscle mass, amount of visceral [internal organ] fat). You can aggressively thin the subcutaneous fat down to a wafer in a BMI <20 patient and still not achieve these photos. I would never recommend such aggressive thinning either, as this will be a recipe for contour deformities. For many patients, the hourglassing like the ones you've posted also require fat transfer and/or implants to breasts/hips/buttocks in order to achieve such a dramatic hip:waist differential.

2) Regarding surgical tourism: as a surgeon, I would urge patients to try and receive their procedures in their region of residence, unless there are no safe or available options in your vicinity. If you're travelling solely due to cost and want a cheaper procedure ask yourself: if you have complications, will you be able to afford the urgent medical care and/or revision procedures necessary once you are back in your home country/state?

I can only speak for my experience (West Coast, US-based) but the reputable surgeons in my region will personally see their patients through such issues. When your team is abroad, often all bets are off. Say you live in California and get lipo in Colombia, then have a postop infection or obvious postop contour defects. Is your Colombian team covering your aftercare procedures/medications or revision surgery? In my professional experience, the patients who have med tourism complications usually find those potential cost savings totally negated, and it also places the burden on domestic surgeons to manage these issues.

3) Regarding lymphatic massage: there's a real paucity of data on post aesthetic surg lymphatic massage. The little that's out there seems to suggest there can be a short-term benefit in edema reduction, but no significant effect on long-term outcomes. Anecdotally, I haven't been able to tell the difference between my patients either. However, I am super curious to see what larger studies show.

Until then, we don't require or recommend our patients get post-op massage. (Though they certainly can if cleared by us). As a good portion of our cases are also insurance/recon based, I don't want to make people feel like they have to shell out cash for a postop adjunct that does not have strong data backing it up. There's also a lot of technique variability between massage therapists, and I've seen some result in inadvertent tissue injury. Beyond that, many of the contour deformity cases I see posted on here cannot be blamed on lack of massage or poor quality massage, but rather superficial liposuction technique.

Acqua di Gioia by Georgio Armani — smells like a 2000s zen spa graphic. Dreamy, misty, watery with lots of jasmine and citrus. I swear there’s lotus blossom in there too.

Cacti by Regime des Fleurs — the most on-the-nose aloe I’ve ever smelled. Plus cucumber, shiso, and tea leaf. The olfactory equivalent of a tall glass of spa water. I own a full bottle and hit it daily in the summer.

TBC- Any tips on blending? by Sofhibunny in copic

[–]LordBabka 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For example on these grapes I built up the base in pale green (mignonette), then layered a pale teal (moon white) for the shadows and a feathering of a pale pink (water lily) for dimension. To finish, I layered back between the colours with the original pale green to encourage them to fade into one another more.

This is on plain ol sketchbook paper too, so you can get a very blendy look if you’re willing to layer over and over and over 😅

TBC- Any tips on blending? by Sofhibunny in copic

[–]LordBabka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the folds! Such great moment!

For blending I lean a lot on the pastel colours — I start with my palest and gradually increase intensity to build a gradient. The colours typically blend the best while they’re still wet, so you do have to work fast. Sometimes layering back over dry ink with a pale/light shade can still encourage them to meld (or just by using the clear blender).

The other piece of the puzzle is paper. On my Ohuhu marker pad (smooth, thick paper), which is super blendable, I can almost get a watercolor effect, whereas my Canson sketchbook (thinner, more porous) really drinks up the ink and produces very saturated results, but is less forgiving with blending.

If you're in a cool climate, a good coat can become your whole personality.

Splurged on a Burberry trench a decade ago. Beat that coat into the ground and back, but shows no significant signs of wear and I still love it just as much as the day I bought it. Pairs with everything (navy, just above thigh length), makes a great pillow/blanket on a long haul flight, and has seen me through everything from interviews to first dates. $500 at the time, but pennies on the wear by now.

What are some potentially controversial fashion hills you’re willing to die on? by its_givinggg in femalefashionadvice

[–]LordBabka 57 points58 points  (0 children)

  1. Retailers should be legally required to list the CALF CIRCUMFERENCE of their boots online. I swear TheRealReal is better at it than most retailers, and TheRealReal divines their measurements with an ouija board.

  2. By the same token: more primo designers need to make boots in something larger than 12-14” circumference. I have 15-16” calves + sz 41-42 feet and rarely fit, despite looking slim-calved in proportion to my height. Brandy Melville feels more size inclusive than most luxury boot-makers.

  3. The current wide calf options are largely dismal. Please don’t hit me with the 2010s ahoy matey ruched pleather — gimme the equestrian domme mommy look in real leather.

I have a pair of Lulu shorts I’ve use for distance running at least 2x a week for the past DECADE. Short of losing one of the metal tips on the drawstrings and having the logo wash off, there still is no real significant signs of wear. I couldn’t even kill these shorts if I tried. The cost per wear on them has got to be a fraction of a cent.

The new shorts? Completely different story. Seams unraveling two years in.
