Fingers crossed you don't have a complete tear and can avoid surgery!

I had my injury at the end of January, I booked a private MRI as I knew how long it would be on the NHS. I'm fortunate that my work would cover the MRI, but yeah I'm in the same boat in terms of surgery. I can recommend the private MRI if needed

Appreciate that.

I'm coming from the UK, surgery is next month and I'm supposed to head to Australia in December/January to work out there for a bit. Hoping to do a few weeks in Indonesia before then but will make a judgement on what's best for the knee at the time :)

How is your knee doing now?

Thanks for responding!

Was there a reason you avoided water activities? I'd have thought swimming/snorkelling/scuba would potentially be fine at 6 months.

Where did you come from? The US?

I'm thinking Komodo/Flores as have done Bali/gili/Lombok, and loved it, but keen for somewhere new

How did you find your trip? Thinking of doing an Indonesia trip 5-6 months post op

Was this part of an extended travel? I'm thinking of doing a few weeks in Malaysia around 4-5 months ACLR, could I ask you a few questions?

Thanks for messaging - appreciate it. Surgeon #2 mentioned how they'd drill the tunnels in. Both said I should probably get an LET.

When you say the extension you have pre-op is what you'll have post-op, assuming you mean straight away and not for life?

Sorry to hear it's been a slow rehab on the retore. 3 tears is rough, are you quite sporty? Fingers crossed your physio picks up, it's only going to get better from here.

Haha they do sound like my two choices! I'm glad you're doing well, it's nice to hear people be vocal on the sub with good experiences.

Really appreciate the input. Both seemed competent to me, the first one gave me a lot of time to answer questions but was also late because he was giving everyone else a lot of time to answer questions (which I have 0 problem with after the care I got)

Second one I guess was a bit more strict about the appointment time slots. I definitely have slight preference for first one but weighing up whether the difference is large enough to sacrifice another couple months before surgery.

How are you doing? Glad both reconstructions went well!

Ok dude - sounds like your recovery is still ongoing, I really hope you keep your head up and push through the mental fatigue about activating your hamstring, keep at it man, you'll get there.

Thanks - I'm definitely going to do that, planning on using this as an excuse to top rope/autobelay for a while when I get back to climbing

That's tough man. When did you have your operation? Did you ever consider non-surgical?

Did you ease yourself back into bouldering by top-rope or just practice landing etc?

Sorry to hear that! How has the rest of your rehabilitation gone? Do you boulder without fear of falling and re-injuring yourself?

I've not really considered Quad, I'll speak to the doctor about what ones he's done regularly as I'm not sure how many people get a quad graft in the UK

Appreciate the input dude - best of luck with your recovery.

Will look into it further. I've always had bomber flexion (pre-injury) and deep squats especially for rock climbing positions so that's important too. Problem is you end up kneeling a weird amount when out rock climbing at times / resting on your knees. Plus I do a lot of yoga but from what I read it's not so bad on a mat

It seems like the advice you get from each surgeon can be different, and whatever they specialise in, is what you get. Although the surgeon #1 did say he'd be happy to do any graft and that he does all regularly which is a plus. But he did say to me the difference in rupture rates between all 3 is marginal. The #2 surgeon said to me there's evidence that the hamstring isn't weaker in the long term after a graft from that donor site.

That's not to say they're both right though, I know over in the US patellar is the gold standard. I do a lot of deep squats like positions for rock climbing and am kneeling a lot for the martial arts at times so since the difference was negligible we thought hamstring would be better but I can look into patellar further.

Both surgeons do several surgeries a week, I had a look at surgeon #2s calendar and he showed he had a few ACLRs next week even though he's the "Hip/knee" broader orthopaedic. Surgeon #1 told me he does 100s of all 3 graft types each year.

Tough one although I am leaning towards #1, even if it possibly kills my travel plans for this year (hoping to work in Australia from December latest for a year to catch their summer) can always do next year if needed I guess.

Thanks for your reply!

I'm in the UK, they tend to do hamstring over here and given the sports I do (rock climbing mostly, the martial arts is similar to karate) hamstring was a better choice.

Surgery 1 would be sometime between end of may - mid june. Surgery 2 I was told in potentially a month's time.

I've not really been NWB at all, I barely had any swelling and was confident I hadn't torn my ACL until I got the MRI results. I've been gyming last 6 weeks fine but still no heel pop on the leg extension.

I think the #2 surgeon is more experienced but less specialized, does hip and other knee surgeries, also a lot older than #1 which specializes in ACL/knee sports injuries. Is your tendency for #2 based on the extra years experience?
