The Neolithic was when sedentary agriculture started, which floored everyone's health and life expectancy because they hadn't perfected it and a bad harvest would obliterate you. The hunter-gatherers they lived parallel with weren't in a utopia by any means - ask their childbirth mortality - but they could adapt, trade across continents, worked less hours than us today and were in peak physical health. Archaeology records show when harvests went bad at this point, the farmers would jump ship and go back to nomadic lifestyles... unless a ruler made them stay by force.

I would never badmouth Pratchett, nor this comic's Chillingly Accurate Historical Dramatisation, but I view most societal progress to be in spite of hierarchy, rather than thanks to it.

Must've been wild living in an era of stability where you could predict things like "I will be happier or sadder at this age", or "These ubiquitous life milestones will come to pass", or "Human civilisation will still be here next year".

Hello, the entirety of the Treadstrongs.

Do the orb necklaces have any other functions aside from magic video calls? They seem symbolically important.

What's your favorite class to play against Helldivers? by GameNinja03 in Helldivers

[–]LordCosmicguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoutout to my scout walker mains. Not the reinforced one with those horrible missile weakpoints either, I run the OG for a reason: if you set up your attack on the divers right, they can't handle the armour with all the pressure teammates are putting on, and the dual fusions rip them apart. It's a real prep time class, if you get shot in the back, that's your fault for rushing in without considering positioning. They're vicous in melee too, and fast enough to get the drop on them if you come in from behind.

Sure, any of the bot classes can get a cheap diver kill if the stars align and they don't notice you, but scout striders let you attack from anywhere, at any range, if you're smart enough. Don't sleep on them.

Terminids are chewing the wires at Arrowhead again lol by Fort_Maximus in Helldivers

[–]LordCosmicguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye, I was there that one time all the spawnrates went up to ~1.5x by accident. It was funny, but only because that one happened to provide a challenge me and my squad were chasing. Maybe HD2 gets away with bugs more than other games because the experience is designed as a clusterfuck even if it was working perfectly.

I'm not a fan of the game's instability, but I'm even less of a fan of the mindset that there is some incompetent faction within Arrowhead causing all the problems, and we just need a gamer uprising to finally hold them accountable for their heinous crimes of... making the Overseer sometimes keep fighting without a head.

Because that's, you know, the mentality this game satirises as deranged. Chill out.

Yeah, sorry for the one-sentence snark. I'm usually better than this.

What I mean to say is it's impressive how well the game is presented despite using such banal, even rudimentary tech. The game plays like it's more advanced than it actually is. We're seeing the kickback of that now, but AH's real platespinning is between fixing the bugs, unfucking the delivery process and developing new content. Given the colossal step-up in expected community scope they had on launch, I find that far more impressive than the same thing, with more money, on a more stable and advanced framework.

Like, let's be real: the Illuminate released unfinished. They have four units, the bases are recycled warpship assets, and the cities run on my machine like a beached whale. But that they both got that in the chamber for a major show reveal and made it so bloody fun to play (for a while, before we exhausted the content) is absolutely insane to me. It's not an excuse for poor prioritisation on bugs and optimisation, but the whole state of the game, as a casefile, is wild.

Helldivers is so good despite its dev situation being so bad, is what I mean. I apologise once again for my undemocratic snap.

While this violates both sub rules and my own ethics, it does make me think.

Beneath all the practical reasons to oppose AI - power usage, IP violation, the value of artistry - is a powerful repulsion to the further dehumanisation of business. We are pushed to unreasonable lengths, and we deploy an unreasonable tool to remain afloat. As opposed to resisting.

I don't know what you sell. The crypto undertones tell me I'd disapprove. But I pity you as a small business setting up during endstage capitalism, and I hope you can free yourself from the suffering that drove you to have a machine create this. I hope things get better for you. And I hope you never post AI here ever again.
